Counties head for showdown over ICL rebels

Plans for a Twenty20 Champions League this autumn could already be in trouble because of the insistence of Lalit Modi, the IPL’s commissioner, that no player with links to the ICL will be allowed to take part

Plans for a Twenty20 Champions League this autumn could already be in trouble because of the insistence of Lalit Modi, the IPL’s commissioner, that no player with links to the rival ICL will be allowed to take part. The chairmen of several English counties have demanded clarification over the eligibility of such individuals. Cricinfo has been told by other reliable sources of an agreement under which ICL-contracted players can take part.”The situation is blurred,” Surrey’s chief executive, Paul Sheldon, told Cricinfo. “No one can fully explain it at the moment, so we are waiting for clarification. Until we have clarification we are going to play the best side that we can to make sure we get to the finals and have that chance of going through to the Champions’ League.”The two finalists of this season’s domestic Twenty20 Cup will qualify for the Twenty20 Champions League. As things stand only three counties – Essex, Middlesex and Somerset -have no ICL players in their squads, although as many as five more may not field ICL players in their squads.Originally, the IPL, backed by the Indian board, demanded that no ICL-contracted players be allowed to take part in any cricket anywhere in the world. But while some boards fell into line, the ECB’s tough approach vis-a-vis the counties gradually fell apart, largely through legal threats, and by early May every ICL player who had signed with a county side was free to play.Counties are increasingly concerned that if they do as Modi demands and omit ICL players then they risk being sued. If they don’t, Modi will block them from taking part. “If they ban the counties, about 15 out of 18 will be ineligible,” Tom Sears, Derbyshire’s chief executive, told The Guardian. “I can’t see the ECB agreeing to a tournament on those terms.”The ECB appears to be caught in the crossfire – keen to cooperate with Modi and the IPL but under increasing pressure from the counties. On Sunday Giles Clarke, the ECB chairman, insisted that the counties were aware of the board’s position that ICL players may be banned from participating in the final. They counter that the ECB has failed to offer clear guidance at any stage of the process. The chairmen also want clarification over Modi’s statement that IPL contracts take precedence over any others in the case of a player who represents more than one side involved in the tournament.Again, that contradicts what Cricinfo has been told, and it seems that it could all come down to a power struggle and Modi seeks to increase the IPL’s control..While the issue will not arise until the autumn, counties need to know that the side they pick in matches which start this week will be the one they can turn out later in the year should they qualify. The outcome will not only give the counties an idea of where they stand and what they need to do, it will clarify just how powerful Modi and the Indian board are in terms of the global game.

Joe Wainman drops exciting Leeds transfer claim

Joe Wainman has dropped an exciting Leeds United transfer claim about their chase for Huddersfield Town midfielder Lewis O’Brien.

What’s the story?

Reports in recent weeks had suggested that Marcelo Bielsa’s side have had preliminary discussions with the Terries over signing him, and now, Wainman has revealed a major development.

Speaking on the latest edition of The Daily Leeds show, he said: “I have it on good authority, a little bit of ITK for you, that Leeds United have agreed a fee with Huddersfield Town.

“I believe it was done yesterday, I can’t be privy to how much, if it does include a player – but I think by the sounds of it, it looks like it is just going to be cash and whether it will be close to £10m, I’m not sure.

“It seems hefty, but Leeds have that money, we need a midfielder, Lewis O’Brien’s liked by Bielsa. He wants him in the door, he’s seen him numerous times and it looks like that one’s going to be done.”

Fans will be excited

Having missed out on the signing of Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher – the England youth international instead made the loan switch to fellow Premier League side Crystal Palace – Marcelo Bielsa is no doubt desperate to strengthen his options in the middle of the park.

And in O’Brien, the club would be getting someone who has the kind of energy and dynamism that can match the high-pressing philosophy Bielsa has employed at Elland Road.

Former Huddersfield goalkeeper, Matt Glennon, said: “Lewis O’Brien wants to put the hard yards in and wants to be at the very top of where he can get to.

“He’s one of those lads who works ridiculously hard which, for me, is your minimum in any league, but he’s got that quality, the drop of a shoulder, that strength to keep people off him, a low centre of gravity to glide past people, arm aloft when they try to knock him off the ball.”

At just 22, and with bundles of Championship experience to his name (he’s played 80 times in the competition), O’Brien could come into Elland Road to provide the likes of Kalvin Phillips with some genuine competition, and keep everyone on their toes.

While high-profile international signings like Rodrigo and Raphinha may be the ones fans typically get excited about, O’Brien’s tenacity, and value for money if Wainman is correct, se

Given Phil Hay’s update that a new central midfielder has been the priority for Leeds since the signing of Junior Firpo from Barcelona, Wainman’s latest claim that the club have agreed a fee for O’Brien is sure to excite Bielsa and the club’s fans.

Meanwhile, Phil Hay has dropped a new Leeds United transfer update…

Altaf demands audit of PCB's finances

Saleem Altaf, the Pakistan board official who was sacked earlier this month, has demanded an independent audit of the PCB’s finances

Cricinfo staff23-Jun-2008Saleem Altaf, the Pakistan board official who was sacked earlier this month, has demanded an independent audit of the PCB’s finances.”PCB lacks accountability and transparency in financial matters,” he told a television channel. “Under [chairman Nasim] Ashraf, the staffing of the board has grown to close 700, which is unheard of in any cricket setup in the world. An independent audit is required.”Altaf, who was director of special projects before being fired for allegedly leaking sensitive information to the press, said he would file a lawsuit against Ashraf against the unlawful taping of his conversations. “They have not charged me with anything in writing nor have they given me any termination letter,” he said. “I am taking them to court that is for sure.”It is believed that conversations Altaf had with several journalists over a period of time were being recorded by the board. “How can they bug my room and tap my telephones?” he said. “Only an insecure person does this or someone who has something to hide does this.”

– Eu me sinto bem à vontade.

Super Sehwag and cool Prasanna

Jamie Alter rewinds the Plays of the day from the third day of the second Test in Galle

66.1 overs and finally a wicket for Anil Kumble © AFP
Exhale of the day
Anil Kumble had bowled 66.1 overs without getting a wicket in the series. After looking on remorsefully and tersely as Dinesh Karthik missed two catches in Colombo, and a couple of unsuccessful reviews in Galle, Kumble struck in the 76th over of Sri Lanka’s innings. Chaminda Vaas tried to turn a straight one to leg and got a leading edge to Harbhajan Singh at short cover. Kumble followed the ball until it settled in Harbhajan’s hands, then raised his own to the skies and held them there. The yell of relief was palpable, and more endearing was how his team-mates rushed to congratulate him. For good measure, Kumble took two more to finish the Sri Lankan innings.Clumsy Gambhir
Not since Aakash Chopra have India had a specialist close-in catcher, and Gautam Gambhir is not a natural short-leg fielder. A specialist knows when to get up, when to stay low, how to anticipate. Having missed two extremely tough chances no one would grudge, Gambhir reprieved Prasanna Jayawardene off Kumble, stretching out his hand to the left but failing to hold on. He then muffed an easy run-out chance as Mahela Jayawardene looked for a sharp single to retain strike. The ball was pushed to the right of Gambhir, who failed to collect it. In Test cricket half-chances need to be taken, but India were let down by Gambhir’s sluggishness.Greeting of the day
No one has stamped their authority over this Test more than Virender Sehwag. An unbeaten 201 in the first innings, out of an Indian total of 329, was followed by a 52-ball 50 to give them another excellent start in the second. Walking out post-lunch after Harbhajan and Kumble gave India a slender 37-run lead, Sehwag carried on from where he left off. Nuwan Kulasekara’s first ball was whipped from middle and leg through midwicket, beating a diving Kumar Sangakkara on the boundary. Sehwag really was on an entirely different plane than his team-mates.Shot of the day
His fielding wasn’t top-drawer, but with the bat Gambhir was very efficient. Having gotten starts in both innings of the first Test and a steady 56 in the first innings here, Gambhir impressed during the second dig. He handled Muttiah Muralitharan and Ajantha Mendis confidently, and just after tea played a most pleasing cover drive off Murali for four. Staying adjacent to the line of the ball, he leaned forward into an into an inside-out drive, sending it racing across the fast outfield. Head still, bat flowing, feet to the pitch, it was one from the coaching manual.CCC moment of the day
That’s cool, calm and collected, by the way. Prasanna is arguably the best wicketkeeper around, having successfully kept to Murali for a couple years now, and this was a blink-and-miss moment. Gambhir perilously half-thrust his front pad against Mendis, and the bouncing offbreak crept between bat and pad. The ball pitched outside leg stump and turned sharply to hit Gambhir’s back pad and then clip the off bail. It spun so much it would have been a great take even if it had not hit the stumps. But Prasanna watched it so closely, he collected it the broken stumps. Talk about keeping your eye on the ball.

Nottingham Forest: Carvalho catches the eye

Nottingham Forest midfielder Joao Carvalho certainly made a positive impact on his return to the City Ground, as he netted a brace against Bradford City on Wednesday evening.

What’s the story?

Carvalho has found regular game time hard to come by with Nottingham Forest in recent seasons, having signed permanently for the Reds back in 2018.

The midfielder has made 67 appearances in total for the Championship side, and has chipped in with six goals and nine assists in his time with the club to date.

He spent last year’s campaign on loan with Spanish side Almeria, and made 36 appearances in total for them, as they finished fourth in the Segunda Division.

Carvalho marked his return to Nottingham Forest with a positive performance in their EFL Cup clash against Bradford City on Wednesday evening, as he netted both of the Reds’ goals in a 2-1 win over the League Two side at the City Ground, as they progressed to the next stage of the competition.

‘Superb’

The 24-year-old has shown glimpses of his quality with the Reds so far, but for one reason or another, he’s been frozen out of the first-team in recent seasons.

The Portuguese-born midfielder has been a fan favourite at the City Ground, and you only have to look at the reaction on social media to his brace against Bradford City to see how highly the club’s supporters rate Carvalho.

Carvalho has shown that he can perform to a high standard in the Championship, having scored four goals and been on hand to provide eight assists in 40 appearances for the Reds during the 2018/19 season.

Nottingham Forest were crying out for a player that could provide the creative spark for Chris Hughton’s side last season, as they endured a frustrating league campaign last term, as they finished 17th in the second-tier standings.

Ryan Yates shoould be sweating over their place in the starting XI moving forwards, especially if Carvalho is to remain at the City Ground beyond the summer transfer window.

He’s shown his quality in tr recent win over Bradford, and he couldn’t have timed it more perfectly to stake a serious claim for a place in their starting XI moving forwards into their Championship matches.

Speaking in an interview on EFL on Quest (quotes sourced from Nottinghamshire Live) after his performance against Middlesbrough in a 3-0 win for Forest back in 2019, Stephen Warnock issued high-praise for Carvalho, and labelled him as ‘superb’, before claiming that he was the difference in their win over Boro.

“Carvalho is a superb player. His individual quality is excellent. He has ability on the ball and a fantastic weight of pass. He was the difference against a poor Middlesbrough team, a very defensive Middlesbrough team.”

Nottingham Forest boss Chris Hughton should drop Yates and hand Carvalho a starting spot in their next match against AFC Bournemouth this weekend, as he’s certainly shown that he’s up for the fight when it comes to a first-team place in Hughton’s plans moving forward this term.
