Alfredo Jaconi receberá a estreia do Grêmio no Campeonato Brasileiro

India shelve intra-squad match in favour of training, centre-wicket

The WACA had been due to stage a three-day game between India and India A, although it would have been behind closed doors

The first Test against Australia in Perth will be India’s first competitive match on tour after the BCCI scrapped a three-day intra-squad game at the WACA.Bidding for a third straight Test series victory in Australia, India’s tour was set to start against India A in a warm-up behind closed doors from November 15-17.But ESPNcricinfo understands India’s hierarchy have changed plans and instead opted for the squad to train during those three days, which will include net sessions and centre wicket match simulation scenarios at the WACA.Australia will likely train at the WACA after India’s stint at the ground in what will be important preparation for some players who have had limited matches under their belt.”Going to be some good centre wickets with our boys bowling in Perth, in similar conditions to what you’re going to get at Optus Stadium. [It’s] probably going to be enough,” Steven Smith recently said about preparing for the Test series with centre wicket practice at the WACA.India had initially decided on an intra-squad game as their sole warm-up before the first Test starting on November 22 rather than a practice match against an Australian domestic side. This is a departure from their last two tours of Australia having begun the red-ball leg of their 2020-21 tour with a three-day game against Australia A, while they played a four-day game against a Cricket Australia XI ahead of the 2018-19 series. The intra-squad match at the WACA was set to be played behind closed doors at the request of India’s hierarchy. There had been hope initially that the game would be open to the public much like India’s two matches against a WA XI side before the 2022 T20 World Cup.Near capacity crowds of around 2500 fans at the WACA, which is currently under redevelopment, attended those matches with a AU$5 entry fee going towards the WA Cricket Foundation.India’s squad is set to depart for Australia shortly after the third and final Test against New Zealand in Mumbai finishes on November 5.Led by Ruturaj Gaikwad, India A were supposed to play India’s Test squad after their four-day matches against Australia A in Mackay and the MCG.India A’s 15-player squad had staggered arrivals into Brisbane on October 25 and 26, with the first contingent of players faced with a delay disembarking off their flight due to an unwell passenger.

Rogers, O'Neill and Sutherland blow Hurricanes away to hand Renegades first win

Captain Nathan Ellis’ all-round effort not enough for Hurricanes, who folded for their lowest BBL total

Hobart Hurricanes crumbled to their lowest BBL total, and lost Matthew Wade to a calf injury, in a shambolic six-wicket loss against Melbourne Renegades in Geelong. After being asked to bat first, Hurricanes’ innings at GMHBA Stadium lasted less than 13 overs on Thursday night as they were skittled for 74. They fell well short of their previous low benchmark – 91 against Sydney Sixers in 2015.New Zealander Tim Seifert, who pulled off a remarkable catch behind the stumps, belted an unbeaten 37 as Renegades chased down 75 in only nine overs.Captain Nathan Ellis saved Hurricanes from worse embarrassment, smashing 35 after coming to the crease at 32 for 6. Ellis then bowled superbly, taking 2 for 12 from his three overs, to clearly be Hurricanes’ best player. In a further blow for Hurricanes’ hopes of breaking through for their first title, Wade was assessed for a calf injury after pulling up sore behind the stumps. Wade, who was on the player microphone for Fox Cricket, expressed his frustration via the commentary when there was a long delay in being able to get off the field.Ben McDermott eventually replaced Wade as Hurricanes’ wicketkeeper after two overs of chaotic communication. The former Australia player didn’t return to the field for the rest of the match, sitting on the bench with a compression bandage on his calf. After conceding boundaries from his first two balls, Renegades seamer Tom Rogers struck back to take 3 for 25, including being on a hat-trick. Fellow opening bowler Fergus O’Neill also claimed wickets in consecutive deliveries. Captain Will Sutherland joined Renegades’ wicket party, finishing with career-best T20 figures of 3 for 14.It was the first BBL match in Geelong since last year’s match between Renegades and Perth Scorchers was abandoned due to an unplayable pitch.Renegades move to 1-1 after losing their opening game of the tournament on Monday night against Sixers. Hurricanes will attempt to put a disastrous start to the season behind them when they host Scorchers on Saturday.

New Rogers: Aston Villa open first talks to sign "exceptional" £30m PL star

Aston Villa kicked off the brand new Premier League season with a 0-0 stalemate against Newcastle United.

While that, of course, isn’t exactly the most exhilarating introduction back to top-flight life, Unai Emery’s Villans would come away from the opening day contest the happier of the two sides with the drab final result, having been reduced to ten men for the final 24 minutes after Ezri Konsa was dismissed.

Still, even despite that result, the Villans must kick on in the weeks to come in order to turn results like this one into a win.

Aston Villa make enquiry to sign £25m star

Villa haven’t been the flashiest side in the chaotic window to date, with just three incomings through the door.

New goalkeeper recruit Marco Bizot was handed his Villans debut against the Magpies and rose to the occasion with a clean sheet. At the same time, the West Midlands outfit’s most luxurious purchase of the summer – who joined for a hefty £30m – so far in Evan Guessand remained rooted to the bench throughout.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

The cash could soon be splashed in a similarly lavish manner if reports are to be believed, with Caught Offside revealing that Emery and Co. have now enquired over signing Manchester City defender Rico Lewis.

It will be difficult for Villa to get a move over the line, however, with Nottingham Forest allegedly also in talks with the exciting 20-year-old, with the Tricky Trees bidding in the region of £30m recently for the City number 82.

Moreover, further interest in Lewis’ services comes from Premier League rivals Chelsea, Newcastle United, and Tottenham Hotspur, with those named also lodging their own enquiries.

How Lewis can be Emery's next Rogers

Villa will keep their fingers crossed that they can race to the front of this ever-extending queue in the hope that they will be able to land a Morgan Rogers repeat if the two-time Premier League winner swaps the Etihad for Villa Park.

Before Rogers established himself as a top-flight “machine” donning claret and blue – as he was dubbed by The Athletic’s Jacob Tanswell – the England international did find himself in the same boat as Lewis in Manchester.

Unfortunately for the £100m-rated star, he would never go on to make the first-team breakthrough on the books of the Citizens, with countless loan spells greeting him, before he was officially let go of by Pep Guardiola’s men in 2023.

Morgan Rogers graphic

This must surely be a regret on the end of the early table-toppers, though, with Rogers going on to flex his muscles in some style in the West Midlands, as 17 goals and 17 assists have come his way from 79 appearances and counting.

Lewis would love for this same first-team spotlight to come down on him if he were to embark on a new challenge at Villa Park, having only started 40 of his 59 Premier League games to date at his boyhood employers, despite largely impressing when thrust into the senior mix.

He certainly stood out against Wolverhampton Wanderers last time out as City brushed off any off-season cobwebs to trounce the Old Gold 4-0 at Molineux, with Lewis getting in on the act himself when teeing up Erling Haaland for the crucial opening strike.

The lively 20-year-old was lauded as “magical” by City journalist Amos Murphy during the game, with his blistering ability to bomb forward and create openings, further putting him on the same pedestal as Rogers.

With experience of the Champions League also under his belt, Emery would be very confident in gifting Lewis plenty of first-team opportunities on his arrival, much like the Spaniard showed no hesitancy in immediately handing Rogers the senior reins last year.

This will be a testing deal to seal, but if Villa want to make more waves this summer, they should go all out to land Lewis, who has also been labelled as “exceptional” by Guardiola for his standout, bit-part offerings at his hometown side.

Eze's dream teammate: Spurs chasing late move for "exceptional" £47m star

The attacking department at Tottenham Hotspur has been subject to somewhat of an overhaul this summer, especially after the departure of fan favourite Heung-min Son.

The South Korean departed in a £20m move to join MLS outfit LAFC, ending his Lilywhites career on a high after claiming the Europa League title at the end of last season.

However, it was an emotional departure, bringing an end to his decade-long stint in North London – a period that saw him amass over 400 appearances and become the club’s fourth-highest goalscorer in their history.

At 33, it was undoubtedly the right call to allow him to move on to pastures new, but it’s left a void in the forward area – something which Thomas Frank will want to fill before the end of the summer window.

Whilst Mohammed Kudus has already been added to such a department, the new boss has made it abundantly clear that he wants added reinforcements to help him in his quest to rise up the Premier League table in 2025/26.

Spurs preparing another big move after Eze

A deal for Eberechi Eze has been in the pipeline for numerous weeks now, but a deal seems to be edging closer to completion, after key moves were made by Daniel Levy.

It was reported that the Spurs owner held face-to-face talks with Steve Parish over a move for the Englishman, which has seen a verbal agreement of £55m plus £5m in add-ons be reached in recent days.

A deal for the 27-year-old could see the Lilywhites’ pursuit of a new number ten finally come to an end, subsequently turning their attention to Monaco star Magnhes Akliouche in an attempt to further strengthen the squad.

According to The Independent, Frank’s men have identified the winger as the latest attacking target this window, potentially pursuing a move for the 23-year-old before the September 1st deadline.

AS Monaco's MaghnesAkliouche

Their report claims that the Frenchman is seen as an alternative to Manchester City’s Savinho after the lack of progress on a deal for the Brazilian, with Akliouche a cheaper option, currently available for around a bargain fee of £43.5m.

Why Spurs’ latest target would be perfect alongside Eze

As previously mentioned, a deal for Eze appears to finally be edging towards its completion, in a deal that would be yet another excellent deal for Spurs this window.

The attacking midfielder was one of the most potent number 10s in the division last year, managing to register 26 combined goals and assists – subsequently firing the Eagles to FA Cup glory.

If he can replicate such numbers across the capital in 2025/26, it would be a signing that would go a long way to improving the options at Frank’s disposal – making the side a force to be reckoned with across all competitions.

Such a deal would also allow the Lilywhites to get one over their bitter North London rivals Arsenal, with the Gunners also previously interested in a move for the England international.

However, the prospect of Eze operating in Frank’s side is scary enough, not to mention the potential partnership he could strike up with Akliouche, should he too make the move to join the club.

He may be an unknown quantity to many, but the 23-year-old enjoyed a season to remember in his homeland last campaign, notching seven goals and 12 assists in all competitions.

His underlying stats were just as impressive, adding another dimension to the Lilywhites squad, offering another huge attacking threat in the hierarchy’s quest for added success in the near future.

Akliouche, who’s been labelled “exceptional” by talent scout Jacek Kulig, ranked in the 93rd percentile for touches in the opposition box and passes into the 18-yard box last campaign – highlighting his ability to create or be on the end of chances.

Such numbers would fit perfectly into the hands of Eze, who registered 12 assists last season, with the pair able to link up and improve their respective tallies in North London.

The Monaco youngster also ranked in the 94th percentile for carries into the final third, whilst posting a 49% take-on success rate, subsequently able to get the ball into dangerous areas at any given opportunity.

His talents are further reflected in his progressive passes per 90 rate, averaging 5.5 per 90, with such tools able to find Eze – who will be required to make third-man runs in behind the striker within Frank’s current system.

Whilst both players would set the club back over £100m, they are additions that need to be made if the club are to build on their recent European triumph in 2024/25.

Both players are extremely technical, having the talent to get out of tight spaces and create endless opportunities, with Akliouche in particular being an exciting addition for the immediate and long-term future in North London.

Seam bowler desperate to resume rivalry with Australia as veteran of 2013-14 series win

Kate Cross says she is doing all she can to be fit for Sunday’s opening Ashes fixture in Sydney as she continues her return from a back injury.Cross, England’s hugely experienced and reliable seamer, broke down with back spasms during the third ODI in South Africa last month and missed the subsequent Test. Further scans upon returning home revealed a slightly bulging disc and she sat out of the sole Ashes warm-up, against a Governor General’s XI, which was washed out in the 29th over on Thursday, to continue building up to a return to play.”It’s been a bit of a frustrating one and I’m the kind of person that’s not used to having injuries,” Cross told ESPNcricinfo when asked how her recovery was progressing, and whether she was on track to play the first ODI at North Sydney Oval.”!t’s been a bit of a tough period but it’s just one of them. I’ve just got to take it day by day, taking each day as it comes really, and seeing what I can and can’t do. But obviously the Ashes is such a huge series, I’m desperate to play a part in it, so just working really hard.”Cross is one a handful of players remaining from the England squad which last won the Ashes on Australian soil in 2014 alongside Danni Wyatt-Hodge, captain Heather Knight, Nat Sciver-Brunt and Amy Jones. As such, she can provide a wealth of advice to England’s younger players but she would obviously rather help out on the field. Making her Test debut at Perth during the 2013-14 series, she played a key role by taking three wickets in each innings, including three for none in seven balls in Australia’s fourth innings, as they ultimately fell 61 runs short of their 185-run target.Related

Calls for Women's Ashes to include three Tests

Cross who is part of the ODI and Test squads for this series, bowled in the nets at Cricket Central in Sydney on Thursday and Jon Lewis, England Women’s head coach, expected some clarity on her fitness to play in the coming days.”I had another scan when I got back to the UK and there was a tiny, tiny, tiny little disc bulge in my back and a little bit of fluid in there,” Cross said. “I had an epidural over the Christmas period to try and settle it all down. Back injuries can be a little bit unpredictable so I’m just working through it all each day.”It’s always frustrating to have an injury and especially an injury that that stops me doing my job. When it’s something that physically keeps you from bowling, then that’s what I’ve found a little bit more difficult.”I’m still really lucky that we’ve got the best science and medicine team available and I’m out in Australia working really hard to try and get as fit as possible as quickly as possible. If I get to play some cricket, brilliant. If I don’t, then I’m hopefully still able to contribute off the pitch as well and help what is quite a youngish bowling attack.”A key part of that young attack is quick Lauren Filer, who endured a difficult outing during the warm-up game at a soggy North Sydney Oval, losing her footing multiple times in delivery. But Cross was confident the problem was more about the conditions than Filer’s rhythm or action.”I’ve not spoken to her but it was just so wet,” Cross said. “I think it probably goes to show that we shouldn’t have started in those conditions, especially so close to an Ashes series, starting on Sunday on the same ground.Cross played a vital role in the 2013-14 Ashes Test win•Getty Images

“We were really aware that, every time it rained, the pitch for Sunday was getting wet. So I think it was the literal footing underneath her. I don’t think it’s anything to do with rhythm or her run-up or anything like that. I think it was just the conditions on the day. She’s a bit like Mark Wood anyway, isn’t she? She sometimes finds herself on the deck, so I’m sure she’ll be absolutely fine.”Filer’s raw pace surprised Australia at times on her international debut in the 2023 Ashes Test but, in the prevailing conditions, it was England’s spinners who did all the damage this week.Left-armer Sophie Ecclestone, the leader of England’s spin attack, claimed three wickets, crucially breaking a 91-run opening stand between Australia captain Alyssa Healy and newcomer Georgia Voll, the latter impressing with a half-century to further press her case for selection in a packed top order.Voll was outstanding on debut against India in December while Healy was nursing a knee problem. Healy was expected to test her ability to keep wicket during the Governor General’s game but Australia didn’t get a chance to field. Instead, she was put through her paces in a practice session after the match was called off, navigating that exercise unscathed.

+ ATUAÇÕES: Tropa do Supermouse!
