Barcelona now in contact for £75,000-a-week Aston Villa star Jhon Duran

With the January transfer window well and truly underway, Aston Villa are reportedly in danger of losing one of Unai Emery’s star men amid Barcelona’s recent contact.

Aston Villa transfer news

It’s a big month for the Villans and their Champions League ambitions. On the pitch, they’ve struggled to hit top form under Emery but managed to secure all-important results nonetheless. Losing once in their last four games in a run that includes a 2-1 defeat of Manchester City, it was Leon Bailey’s first goal of the season which put those at Villa Park in high spirits once again against Leicester City last time out.

The winger’s goal comes at a good time too, given how his place is at risk amid reports that Aston Villa are chasing the signature of Borussia Dortmund’s Donyell Malen this month. A sudden return to form could instantly save Villa plenty of money and put Emery’s side back on course to qualify for European football for the second season running.

Borussia Dortmund's Donyell Malen celebrates

It’s not just incomings that the Midlands club have to worry about, however. According to Sport in Spain, Barcelona have now made contact with Jhon Duran’s representatives over securing his signature as soon as this month as their failure to register Dani Olmo threatens to derail an otherwise solid first season under Hansi Flick.

Often forced to settle for a place on Emery’s bench, it will be interesting to see whether Duran will be able to resist Barcelona’s potential pursuit and if the La Liga giants will even have the funds to welcome such a player from a fellow Champions League side this month.

The £75,000-a-week forward is certainly one to watch, with his performances pushing him beyond a substitute’s role throughout the current campaign.

"Special" Duran has big decision to make

There has been no greater headache for Emery this season than the decision to start one of Ollie Watkins or Duran. The former has enjoyed a solid campaign and it could be argued that his work off the ball is better than his competition, but there’s also no denying the pure goalscoring ability of the latter, who will not want to settle for a place on the bench forever.

What is currently a luxury for those at Villa Park could quickly become a problem and there’s no doubt that Duran has quite the decision to make, particularly if Barcelona come calling this month.

The numbers build Duran’s case for a starting spot even further, with seven goals to his name despite making just four Premier League starts all season. Emery is certainly aware of that quality though, having praised his forward in abundance since his arrival.

Speaking after Duran’s brace against Liverpool last season, Emery told reporters as relayed by beIN Sports: “Jhon Duran is a special player. We have to try and help him. He is a good guy, and he needs a team behind him. He is getting our demands better. He was very clinical and today was important for him.”

INEOS now plotting to accelerate Man Utd transfer talks for £54m speedster

Manchester United are keen on signing a £58 million full back loved by Ruben Amorim this month, and a new report reveals the transfer could now pick up steam.

Man Utd transfer news

It was made clear before this transfer window opened that signing players this month may be a struggle for the Red Devils. However, that has not stopped the speculation, as United continue to be linked with players from England and abroad, with the possibility of cashing in on unwanted squad members aiding their chase for new faces.

Man Utd eye cheaper version of Gyokeres who's "very similar" for just £29m

The Red Devils have their eye on a player Ruben Amorim knows well.

A story emerged last week that stated United and Juventus were in discussions over a possible swap deal involving Dusan Vlahovic and Joshua Zirkzee. The Premier League side are keen on signing the Serbia international, and the Turin giants want to sign Zirkzee and offer him a fresh start back in Italy.

A fresh development has since emerged, with it being reported that those talks are now at an advanced stage. Both sides are showing a willingness to complete the move, with the Serbian viewed as an upgrade for the Red Devils in attack.

Vlahovic is not the only forward on United’s radar, as a report from Spain has revealed that the Red Devils are interested in signing Conrad Harder from Sporting CP as a “plan B” to Viktor Gyokeres. Lisbon wants around £29 million to sell Harder, whose flexibility in attack makes him a real asset, and he is known to Amorim, as he was the one that brought him to Sporting in the summer.

Man Utd want to accelerate transfer talks to sign £54m ace

Signing a new striker is not the only addition Amorim wants, as a new left-back is also on the shopping list, and according to Caught Offside, Manchester United want to accelerate transfer talks for Nuno Mendes.

The 22-year-old, who has been described as “very exciting,” emerged on United’s radar in December, as he is a player that Amorim knows very well from his time at Sporting CP. United want to sign a new left wing-back, as injuries to Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia in recent times have left them short in that position, and it still remains an issue for the United boss now.

This report states that the Red Devils remain in talks over a deal to sign Mendes, but they face stiff competition from Real Madrid and arch-rivals Manchester City, who are also monitoring his situation.

It is reported that United are the team that is most advanced in their interest, although they are yet to make a breakthrough in terms of agreeing to a transfer, as PSG hold out for €65 million, which is roughly £54 million.

Amorim sees Mendes as the ideal signing for the left wing-back role, and the fact that the defender has refused to sign a new contract with PSG could help the Red Devils secure a transfer. The Portuguese’s contract is valid until 2026, so if United make an offer near the £54 million PSG want, then surely a deal can be made this month, but it will be tight for the Premier League outfit and may depend on shifting current players first.

Shikhar Dhawan has been given another chance to lead India’s ODI side, this time on the tour of the Caribbean later this month, with Ravindra Jadeja serving as his deputy in the 16-man squad. Designated captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah, Rishabh Pant and Mohammed Shami have all been rested for the three-match series, while KL Rahul, who recently underwent surgery for a sports hernia, was not considered for selection.Shubman Gill makes his ODI comeback after the tour of Australia in December 2020, while Sanju Samson is back after a year, having played his lone ODI so far in Sri Lanka last July. Samson and Ishan Kishan are the two wicketkeepers in the squad.Arshdeep Singh, the left-arm pacer who has been included in a full-strength squad for the England ODIs later this month, has been retained alongside Prasidh Krishna, Mohammed Siraj and Shardul Thakur. Yuzvendra Chahal, Jadeja and Axar Patel – all part of the England tour party – complete the spin department.Ruturaj Gaikwad, Avesh Khan and Deepak Hooda, who were all left out of the ODI squad in England, have been included. While opener Gaikwad and fast bowler Avesh are uncapped in the format, Hooda is two matches old in ODIs, having made his debut against West Indies this February.Avesh Khan and Ruturaj Gaikwad have been included in the 16-member squad•BCCI

All three players have established themselves as key members of their respective IPL franchises. Gaikwad was the Orange Cap holder for scoring the most runs in IPL 2021 for champions Chennai Super Kings, while Avesh and Hooda are coming off impressive seasons for IPL debutants Lucknow Super Giants this year. More recently, Hooda made his maiden T20I century on the tour of Ireland late last month.Gaikwad, in particilar, has been prolific in 50-overs cricket, having hit 603 runs in five innings for Maharashtra during the domestic 50-overs Vijay Hazare Trophy in December last year. He hit four centuries then, the joint-highest in a single edition of the tournament. He struck those runs at a strike rate of 112.94.Largely seen as a one-format player now, Dhawan will lead India in a series only for the second time. Last July, he led a second-string squad on the white-ball tour of Sri Lanka, even as the regulars were in England for the WTC final against New Zealand as well as the Test series against England that followed.Like Rahul, Deepak Chahar and Kuldeep Yadav were also not considered for selection, with both of them recovering from injuries. Sunderland in talks over deal to sign £13m striker after Isidor nightmare

Sunderland are now in talks over a deal to sign a striker this month, with Regis Le Bris in favour of the move, according to a report.

Black Cats keen on a striker

The Black Cats are searching for a new striker this month, in order to strengthen their Championship promotion push, and they have identified a number of targets.

Southampton’s Ben Brereton Diaz was on Le Bris’ shortlist, with the Saints willing to offload the forward this month, but Sheffield United are leading the race for his signature, as he would only consider a move to his former club.

The Blades are also in the running for another Sunderland target, namely Leicester City’s Tom Cannon, and they are also in pole position for the 22-year-old’s signature, having now agreed a £13m deal with the Foxes.

He could become a viable alternative amid increasing competition for Cannon’s signature.

ByBen Browning Jan 17, 2025

As such, the Black Cats may be forced to move on to other options, and they could be well-placed to sign Westerlo striker Mathias Frigan, who they are believed to be seriously interested in signing.

There has now been a promising new update on Sunderland’s pursuit of Frigan, with Germanijak reporting they have now entered talks with Westerlo to discuss the terms of a deal (via Sport Witness).

This comes after Wilson Isidor, who has been fantastic for the club during his loan stay from Zenit, endured a horror evening at Burnley on Friday, seeing two late penalties saved in the same corner by James Trafford.

Le Bris is said to be strongly in favour of Frigan’s arrival, with the manager looking to bolster his squad to aid his side’s chances of returning to the Premier League.

The Championship promotion hopefuls want to sign the Croatian on a loan deal, with a conditional obligation to buy for a fee of €15m (£13m) if they achieve their goal of returning to the top flight.

The 21-year-old is very interested in moving to the Stadium of Light, which may make it easier to get a deal over the line.

Frigan could be a shrewd acquisition for Le Bris

The former Rijeka man didn’t have the best debut season in Belgium, scoring just four goals in 23 league games, but he has already managed to better that goal tally this term, picking up six goals and three assists in 20 outings.

Football talent scout Jacek Kulig has also previously lauded the starlet, likening him to former European Golden Shoe winner Ciro Immobile.

It would be a slight risk to sign Frigan, given that he is unproven in a major league, but a loan deal with an obligation to buy if they win promotion could be a shrewd way of bringing in an impressive striker with less risk. It would take some of the goalscoring pressure off Isidor’s shoulders at a delicate time for the youngster, who admitted Friday was the worst day of his life.

Jayasuriya, Mendis run through Pakistan as Sri Lanka level series

Spinners share nine wickets between them to bowl Pakistan out for 261; Babar’s 81 not enough to eke out a draw

Andrew Fidel Fernando28-Jul-2022

Pakistan went into the final day with nine wickets in hand, having batted outstandingly in the fourth innings at Galle last week, and probably needing to play out a little over two full sessions, with the light likely to deteriorate in the afternoon again. But outside a 79-run third-wicket stand between Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan, they could not resist Sri Lanka’s rampant spinners. Prabath Jayasuriya, perhaps the find of Sri Lanka’s home season, claimed his fourth Test five-for in six innings, taking 5 for 117. Ramesh Mendis, who himself had had a five-for in the first innings, claimed 4 for 101.Bowling together since before lunch, they took seven wickets between them for 85 runs. One batter – Fawad Alam – had been run out, though this had also been brought about partly by the pressure these two had created.Babar top-scored with 81off 146 balls, having earlier overturned an lbw against him on 34. It was his wicket, soon after lunch, that was the key moment – Jayasuriya getting him lbw with a straight delivery. It was in the last half-hour before the break, though, that Sri Lanka, and the pitch, suddenly came to life. Suddenly, chances were being created, balls were dropping just short of excited close-in fielders, and a heavy pressure had descended on Pakistan.Rizwan was the first to go, leaving a Jayasuriya delivery that was angled in from around the wicket. He did not quite believe that this straighter ball had clipped his off stump, and waited for confirmation from the third umpire, that he had, in fact, been bowled for 37 off 69.Fawad Alam was then run-out in a horrendous mix-up for which Babar was likely to be blamed. Having made just one off his first eight balls, Fawad was keen to get off strike against Mendis. He hit a ball straight of mid-on and took off, expecting Babar to come through. Babar initially took a couple of steps, but looking over his shoulder, decided to send Fawad back even though his partner was about three-quarters of the way to the danger end. Asitha Fernando’s throw found the keeper’s gloves, and Fawad was not even close to making it back.Agha Salman then played a pained six-ball innings in which it seemed every other ball might get him out. He was out off what turned out to be the last ball before lunch, as he played a paddle sweep against Jayasuriya, and ended up only hitting the ball to Kusal Mendis at short leg, who had anticipated the stroke and reacted well to pouch it, diving quickly to his right. The Sri Lanka players celebrate Imam-ul-Haq’s wicket•AFP/Getty Images

As long as Babar was around, though, Pakistan still had a chance of batting out a session and half, and securing a draw. Upon resumption, the bowlers were still dominant. He was dropped on 78 by Dhananjaya de Silva at slip, off the bowling of Jayasuriya. The ball had gone a distance to his left, and travelled quickly – de Silva getting both hands to it before grassing it. It didn’t hurt Sri Lanka much, though, in Jayasuriya’s next over, he slid one into Babar’s front pad, the batter playing for the ball that turns. This time, a review would not save Babar.Pakistan unravelled quickly after that. Mohammad Nawaz was caught at cover the following over, trying to smash Mendis against the turn. Yasir Shah bashed six boundaries and had moved to 27 off 24, before fending one to gully to give Jayasuriya his fifth wicket. Hasan Ali was bowled off a deflection trying to sweep Mendis, and Naseem Shah holed out to the same bowler, trying to clobber one over deep midwicket.Earlier, after Imam had edged Mendis behind on 49, Babar and Rizwan had prospered square of the wicket. Having overturned an lbw decision against him on 34, Babar got to his 23rd Test fifty off the 71st ball he faced. He defended resolutely but did not allow the bowlers to deliver long strings of dots to him.Rizwan scored almost exclusively through the leg side, meanwhile, hitting three of his six boundaries via his most productive stroke – the sweep. Only one of his 37 runs came on the offside. This was after Imam-ul-Haq had been dismissed in the third over of the day, caught behind when Mendis spun one more sharply than he anticipated.Sri Lanka’s victory means the series is levelled 1-1. While realistically, either of these teams would have had to win the series 2-0 to give themselves a chance of making the World Test Championship final, they are not out of the hunt either.

Australia men's FTP takeaways: BBL window, the Afghanistan question, home Tests in March

There is a bigger squeeze than ever to fit in all the bilateral cricket alongside global events and the expanding domestic leagues

Alex Malcolm17-Aug-2022

Test cricket will continue to run alongside the BBL in most years, but white-ball-only players should be available•Cameron Spencer/Getty Images

Mind the BBL gap
Cricket Australia have made the BBL a top priority under new chairman Lachlan Henderson with a fresh broadcast deal looming in 2024. It has faced numerous hurdles recently with the proliferation of rival leagues in the UAE and South Africa even as it tries to recover from the impacts of Covid-19. CA had previously said it would like a free window in January, which now has a crunch of leagues, to allow Australia’s international stars to play in the BBL. The plan has been partially successful.Australia don’t have any white-ball commitments in January over the next four years, but there will be Test cricket that will take the multi-format players away. They are scheduled to host West Indies in two Tests in mid-January 2024 as the ODI World Cup in October-November 2023 creates a squeeze on Australia’s home summer. Meanwhile, in January-February 2025, there is a two-Test tour of Sri Lanka. That series will need to be played before the Champions Trophy, which does not leave CA much room to keep the Test players at home for the BBL. Then, in early 2027, Australia will make another unusual summer away trip to India to play five Tests in January and February.CA’s head of scheduling, Peter Roach, confirmed that CA had tried to create a January window. “That was the priority to try and free the white-ball players so they can compete in the whole BBL,” he told ESPNcricinfo. “But we understand Test cricket works in that window as well. So it’s trying to find that balance between the opportunity for everyone to play versus making sure that our Test product is still really strong.”Related

ICC FTP: Bangladesh land Test and ODI jackpot in 2023-2027 cycle

Homeward March
There is another significant knock-on effect of the five-Test tour of India in 2027. Australia have not hosted a Test in March since 1979 with their home matches played almost exclusively between November and January each year, with the exception of the rare winter series. But, in the new FTP, there will be two Tests against Bangladesh in March 2027 with the home summer essentially split in half by a trip to India. Australia begin that home summer with limited-overs matches against England in November 2026 before hosting Tests against New Zealand over Boxing Day and New Year. Then, after heading to India, they will return to host Bangladesh at a time when traditionally only Sheffield Shield cricket has been played in Australia. It will also be just the second time Bangladesh have played a Test series in Australia, with the first coming way back in 2003. It will also complete a run of ten Tests in four months for Australia to finish their 2025-2027 WTC cycle.Back-to-back West Indies
One of the vagaries of Australia’s new FTP is that they will host West Indies for Test matches in consecutive home summers because of the new World Test Championship starting next year. They visit for two Tests in December this year during the final stages of the current WTC cycle, but the new one starts afresh thereafter and Australia are drawn to host them again the following summer for two more Tests. It’s understood CA did try to change the order of the series to avoid the back-to-back visits but it was unable to find a solution. Australia will also travel to the Caribbean in 2025 for three Tests and three ODIs.In 2027, Bangladesh are scheduled to play their first Tests in Australia since 2003•AFP via Getty Images

Winter cricket back in northern Australia
Australia are hosting Zimbabwe and New Zealand in the coming weeks during late winter in the north of the country and will have more internationals during that period in years to come with the climate in the Northern Territory and North Queensland perfect for cricket. Australia have experimented with winter cricket previously, starting with ODIs under the roof at Docklands in Melbourne in 2000 and 2002, to Test matches in Darwin and Cairns in 2003 and 2004, before abandoning the concept after an ODI series against Bangladesh in 2008.It wasn’t a popular offering for local broadcasters as it clashed with the football codes that dominate the winter airwaves. But they will host ODIs and T20Is with South Africa in August of 2025 and then a Test, and T20Is ODIs against Afghanistan in July and August of 2026. “We hope that [winter cricket] becomes a little bit more regular,” Roach said. “I don’t think it’ll be every year but we know those games will be really well supported by all those fans and we also know the fans around the country, whilst they’re deep into their footy season, still relish the opportunity to watch some cricket during our winter months.”The Afghanistan question
Australia were set to host Afghanistan in a one-off Test last year prior to the Ashes but it was postponed after the Taliban seized control in Afghanistan with CA taking a stance on women being prevented from taking part in the sport (the game had previously been postponed from 2020 due to Covid-19). Australia have two bilateral commitments against Afghanistan in the new FTP – an away T20I series in August 2024 and the aforementioned tour in northern Australia in 2026 – which will mean the CA board may have to make another decision on their position depending on the situation when the series are played.More broadly, CA knows it will need to pull its weight in playing the developing nations and alongside the away T20Is against Afghanistan will also tour Ireland for white-ball matches in 2024.”We want world cricket to be really strong, and it’s not going to be really strong if we restrict ourselves to a handful of opponents,” Roach said. “Having the opportunity to go and play these opponents, developing countries in some respects, is something we’re really focused on doing. Not so much to be a good citizen, it’s the right thing to do because we know what value it brings to our players and also the players in the opposing teams.”Australia’s men’s FTP 2023-2027 (* = home series)2023-24
