Khaya Zondo reveals anguish at being left out of South Africa ODI side in 2015

“I switched off mentally for the rest of the day and I detached myself from the team because it was clear I was not wanted”

Khaya Zondo expressed the hurt he felt in 2015•PTI

Khaya Zondo revealed the anguish he suffered after being left out of South Africa’s ODI team to play against India in 2015, a decision Cricket South Africa (CSA) ruled was unfair as it violated their selection policy. Zondo testified in private at the Social Justice and Nation Building (SJN) hearings but asked for his submission to be made public after former national selector Hussein Manack expressed regret over Zondo’s omission on Thursday.Manack detailed how Dean Elgar was slotted into the XI in place of an injured JP Duminy, despite Zondo being the back-up batter in the squad, and David Miller was kept in the team, allegedly at the insistence of then captain AB de Villiers. Zondo told a similar version of events, including that de Villiers had personally explained to Zondo why he was left out, but said the experience left him lost on the day and had impacts on him afterwards.Related

“I switched off mentally for the rest of the day and I detached myself from the team because it was clear I was not wanted,” Zondo said, recalling his feelings on the day of the fifth ODI. “Switching off helped me cope with everything that was happening. The hardest part was watching the players who were selected ahead of me playing and having the opportunity to shine for South Africa on a world stage, in India and having a chance to play and potentially impress and get future IPL opportunities.”When Zondo returned home, he and several other black players wrote a letter to CSA, expressing their unhappiness with selection and prompting the inquiry that ultimately found Zondo should have played ahead of Elgar, who was not part of the ODI squad. Although the investigations were conducted confidentially, the existence of the letter was well-known in cricket circles and was used to mock Zondo while he was playing.”We were playing a game in Potchefstroom against the Lions and I was batting. There were two white players close to me. One was bowling to me. I hit the ball for four and he said, ‘Why didn’t you do this for South Africa A?’ Then he bowled another ball which beat my bat and he said, ‘If you weren’t so focused on writing letters, you might be a better player.’ The other white player proceeded to call me a ‘postman’,” Zondo said. “I remember walking up to the guy who was bowling and I lost it. I was pointing my bat in his face. I had just been through the hardest thing any player can go through and they had no understanding of what it was like to be in that position and were making fun of it. Instead of these guys not having something to say, they saw fit to comment and belittle and ridicule. They saw it as a joke.”However, Zondo was not completely isolated at the time. He gave words of thanks to a senior white player in the national team who sent him a WhatsApp message that “comforted me to know that he supported me,” and two cricketers who he did not name that “walked the journey with me,” especially through meetings with CSA. “They were the only two willing to stand by me. I hope other black players stand up for each other as they stood up for me. We would be a lot further along as black people in cricket if we stood up for each other and we didn’t waver in our beliefs,” he said.Zondo also paid tribute to former Dolphins coach Lance Klusener, who continued to back him on his return from India. “Lance Klusener saw how it broke me. I think God put him there because he has been at international level. He knows how tough things can get and he was the right person to help me through that,” Zondo said. “If I had a weaker coach who had not experienced the harsh things that happen to players, the outcome might have been different. Lance said to me (in isiZulu): ‘Khaya, you need to be tough, you need to be strong, you need to toughen up. When this is over, you will be a better man for it.'”His testimony ended with a plea to current players, of all races, to speak out against discrimination. “We are here in these hearings because of past generations who didn’t speak up, who had their reasons for not speaking up when they played. Everyone has their reasons,” he said. “I would like all players to come out and speak and give their opinion or if they have had any experience, to talk about it. Their silence also allows discrimination to continue. Silence is not the answer for how we correct this. This thing affects everyone. Privilege often makes equality seem like oppression. For equality to come into place, people need to strip themselves of privilege so they can see other people’s experiences.”The SJN will take a two week break until August 23. In the interim, the project has issued a call for anyone who has been adversely mentioned to submit a response by August 18. Mark Boucher, the current men’s head coach, is among those expected to appear when the SJN resumes.

No Son: Ange makes 6 changes in predicted Spurs lineup vs Man Utd

Tottenham Hotspur look to be steering in the right direction after an up-and-down start to the campaign, but now face Manchester United at Old Trafford in a Premier League clash that both teams desperately need to win.

United, who won the FA Cup before the summer, have not started well under Erik ten Hag, thrashed on home turf already by Arne Slot’s Liverpool.

The Red Devils and Spurs are level in points in the standings – seven after five matches – though Tottenham have scored nine goals to tomorrow’s opponents five. Ange Postecoglou will hope to utilise that ostensible attacking advantage to score a statement win.

Postecoglou’s side beat Qarabag 3-0 in their Europa League opener on Thursday evening despite playing the majority of the contest with ten men after Radu Dragusin was sent off early on.

Skipper Heung-min Son hobbled off in the second half in what could be a significant blow to the visitors’ attacking fluency. Will he make it to the starting lineup? We reckon Postecoglou could ring six changes for the match at the Theatre of Dreams, following the midweek triumph.

1 GK – Guglielmo Vicario

Guglielmo Vicario has not missed a minute in the Premier League since he was signed from Serie A side Empoli for an initial £17m fee in August 2022.

That won’t change on Sunday.

2 RB – Pedro Porro

Rested for the midweek Europa League tie, Pedro Porro’s completeness will be crucial against Man United, with the Spaniard set to tussle against one of Alejandro Garnacho or Marcus Rashford.

He scored on the opening day of the term and has averaged two key passes and 2.6 tackles per game in the Premier League this season, as per Sofascore.

3 CB – Cristian Romero

Postecoglou spoke of some “fresh guys” who had been rested for the continental clash, and Cristian Romero is one of them. A tough-tackling titan if there ever was one, he’s a monstrous presence in defence and will strike fear into the hosts’ attacking line, who have not yet found their shooting boots in 2024/25.

4 CB – Micky van de Ven

Micky van de Ven continues to exceed expectations. The Dutch defender is as dynamic as he is dominant in the backline, though he has struggled to hit the same sharpness in the duel so far this season, winning just 38% of his ground battles. That needs to change.

5 LB – Destiny Udogie

Destiny Udogie for Tottenham

He was given a rest against Qarabag, but Destiny Udogie ended up playing around 80 minutes of football on Thursday, replacing youngster Lucas Bergvall after 12 minutes following Dragusin’s dismissal.

A physical specimen with pace and power in abundance, Udogie will be a constant thorn in Man United’s flank.

6 CM – Pape Matar Sarr

Reprising his role in the middle of the park after a goalscoring display against Qarabag, Pape Matar Sarr hasn’t actually played over 45 minutes of football in the English top flight since the opening day of the season.

He scored in the Europa League, though, and will bring the energy and drive to Postecoglou’s midfield that will be needed to overcome United’s efforts.

7 CM – Rodrigo Bentancur

Rodrigo Bentancur warming up for Tottenham

With Sarr looking to keep his starting berth, Postecoglou will need to choose between Yves Bissouma and Rodrigo Bentancur to complete his midfield, and he should well opt for the latter.

The Uruguayan, aged 27, is an all-encompassing star, and having completed 92% of his passes in the Premier League this term, will bring the control that his team need to leave Manchester with a positive result.

8 RW – Dejan Kulusevski

The best player of the campaign so far? There’s a case for it. Dejan Kulusevski brings something unique to Postecoglou’s side, and though he’s been fashioned into a central midfielder for the early matches of the year, Son’s injury could see him revert to his typical right-flanking role.

The £110k-per-week star is Tottenham’s lifeblood in attack. He works and works and works. Tireless. Sky Sports’ Jamie Weir is a big fan, summing up his importance: “Dejan Kulusevski really is a special special player. Works so hard, covers every blade of grass. Hell of an engine on him, and just so much heart.”

9 AM – James Maddison

James Maddison has endured a challenging 2024, but he’s started the current campaign with conviction and was virtually unplayable as the Lilywhites defeated Brentford in the Premier League last weekend.

Ranking among the top 1% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for passes attempted and progressive passes and the top 3% for shot-creating actions per 90, as per FBref, he could be the catalyst tomorrow.

10 LW – Brennan Johnson

With Son probably set to start from the bench – having been dubbed a doubt by Postecoglou – Brennan Johnson will be tasked with performing on the left wing. The Wales international came under fire for his early-season performances but has responded emphatically, scoring in each of his last three matches.

Man Utd ready bid for £75m flop who’s unwanted at top club in Antony repeat

Manchester United are apparently willing to bid for a £75 million attacker who is now unwanted at a top European club, in a worrying move with shades of their past mistakes.

It has been an interesting few days at Old Trafford as pressure grows on manager Erik ten Hag, so much that a meeting on Tuesday discussed his future at the club. However, as there’s been no update on the situation, it is expected that the Dutchman will take charge of the game against Brentford after the international break.

"What worries me" – Mark Goldbridge drops concern over Leny Yoro at Man Utd

ByBrett Worthington Oct 10, 2024 Man Utd transfer news

While results and performances have been poor on the pitch, it appears the hierarchy at United are looking at ways of improving this squad once again either in the New Year or in the 2025 summer transfer window. The Red Devils could be looking to improve their midfield once again in the future, as the likes of Christian Eriksen and Casemiro will probably move on. United are interested in signing Real Madrid midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni, with the player “on the list” of many Premier League teams.

kalvin-phillips-aurelien-tchouameni-liverpool-opinion

As well as looking at Tchouameni, Man United are also keeping an eye on Stuttgart winger Jamie Leweling. The 23-year-old may be relatively unknown to English supporters, but he has been mightily impressive for the Bundesliga side this season. United scouts were present at a recent Stuttgart game and were left impressed by the winger’s performance.

Man Utd ready bid for £75m PSG flop

According to a report from Europe relayed by Stretty News, Manchester United are interested in signing striker Randal Kolo Muani from Paris Saint-Germain. The forward, who used to play for Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt, is being targeted by the Red Devils as they look to improve their attack once again, and they even ready to make a bid for his services.

The report states that Kolo Muani is unsettled in Paris after joining the club in a deal worth roughly £75 million in September 2023. United have been keeping an eye on the forward, and they are now willing to make an offer worth 70 million euros, which is about £58 million. PSG are looking to make changes to their squad, and they would “not be unhappy” to see Kolo Muani depart and recoup some of their initial outlay on the France international.

For United, their habit of overpaying for players who may not be wanted at other elite European clubs – like the moves for Ángel Di María and Casemiro at the wrong times in their careers – seems to be rearing its ugly head again.

Kolo Muani netted just six times in 26 Ligue 1 appearances last season, and his form since getting his big move is eerily similar to current United man Antony, who has managed just five Premier League goals since signing from Ajax for a similar price tag to Kolo Muani’s move to Paris.

Quem explica melhor é Victor Pimenta, setorista do Goiás no “Jornal O Hoje”.

Moeen Ali to announce retirement from Test cricket

England allrounder uncomfortable with spending extended time away from home for winter’s Ashes

Moeen Ali, the England allrounder, is set to announce his immediate retirement from Test cricket.Moeen, 34 and a veteran of 64 Tests, has decided he no longer has the hunger to play the longest format. In particular, ESPNcricinfo understands he is uncomfortable with the prospect of an extended time away from home in the coming months as a likely member of both the T20 World Cup and Ashes squads. He is currently in the UAE, playing for Chennai Super Kings in the IPL but is understood to have informed Chris Silverwood, the England head coach, and Joe Root, England’s Test captain, in recent days.He is keen to continue his career for England in white-ball cricket and is also expected to continue to play county and franchise cricket. It seems unlikely he will continue to play first-class cricket but no firm decision has yet been taken on that.Related

Dobell: Spurned Moeen begins the long kiss goodnight

'Natural leader' Moeen steps up as Root's deputy for Oval Test

England slog raises familiar questions about Moeen spin role

People will, no doubt, be debating the merits of Moeen’s career for years to come. Some of the statistics are arresting: he reached the landmark of 2000 Test runs and 100 wickets, for example, in fewer Tests than Ian Botham, Garry Sobers and Imran Khan. Only 15 England bowlers have taken more Test wickets. At his high point, he was rated the third best allrounder in the ICC’s Test rankings. But it’s maybe fitting that he looks set to finish short of 3000 runs and short of 200 wickets. For there was something about Moeen that always left you wanting more. Something that delighted and frustrated in equal measure. Even in what turned out to be his final Test, when his skied slog-sweep saw him dismissed for 35, you could feel the groan of disappointment around The Kia Oval. The will for Moeen to succeed, to see his elegant cover drive unfurled once more, was immense. Perhaps the fragility, the sense that it could all end at any moment, made it feel all the more precious. At his best, such as when he scored four Test centuries in 2016, he looked a fine batter more than worth his place in the side as a specialist. But there were times, sometimes quite extended times, when the confidence seemed to drain away and the scores disappeared with it. A final Test batting average of 28 seems modest for one so talented. That unbeaten innings of 108 against Sri Lanka in his second Test promised so much more. Many of the same things could be said about his bowling. At his best, such as when he took 25 wickets in four Tests against South Africa in 2017, or a haul of 32 wickets in six Tests against Sri Lanka and West Indies in the winter of 2018-19, he demonstrated the drift, dip, pace and bite that would delight any offspinner. It is telling that, of England spinners, only Derek Underwood and Graeme Swann finished their careers with more wickets. Even Jim Laker couldn’t match Moeen’s strike rate of 60.70.Moeen fields in front of packed stands at The Oval•AFP/Getty Images

On other occasions, such as the Ashes tour of 2017-18, when his five wickets came at a cost of 115 apiece, he seemed a man charged with an impossible task. Nobody else in the top 25 wicket-takers in England’s Test history has an average as high as Moeen’s 36.66. But in a weak era of English spin bowling, he answered the call more capably than anyone could have predicted. Ultimately, it may be concluded that he overachieved with the ball and underachieved with the bat.The debate over whether England coaxed the best out of him will rumble on, too. Certainly he was asked to fulfil multiple roles – he batted everywhere from No. 1 to No. 9 – to accommodate the demands of more valued players. And while he produced some memorable lower-order innings, the mentality of batting with the tail changed him. He became a provider more of cameos than the substantial innings he dreamed of playing as a youngster.Equally, the faint praise from Ed Smith, then the national selector, suggesting “the role of first-choice spinner might not be best suited to him” stung and, along with not being given a full central contract at the end of 2019, represented a turning point in Moeen’s relationship with the team management. At the time he was dropped, after the first Ashes Test of the 2019 series, he had been the world’s top wicket-taker in Test cricket over the preceding 12 months. It remains to be seen whether any of Moeen’s England colleagues follow suit with news of their own in the coming days. Certainly there are serious reservations from as many as 10 players and several more support staff about the prospect of further time in quarantine and the demands this could place on family life. If the cricket boards of England and Australia insist the Ashes go ahead at any cost, they will find themselves with a much diminished contest.Such issues can wait. Now is the time to reflect on Moeen’s legacy. With a hat-trick, five centuries, five five-fors and some sharp catches, he has been involved in some of the most thrilling moments of England’s Test cricket over recent years. And, as a willing spokesperson for diversity and inclusivity, he has performed a valuable role in educating a generation that it is perfectly possible to be British, Muslim and proud of both. He reminded us, too, that cricket wasn’t just a game of the public school playing field or village green, it was a game of the urban park or backyard, too. This may well be remembered as his most significant contribution to the sport. Will he be remembered as a great of English cricket? Well, he comes from a background where his parents went without food to ensure money was found for travel to games and match fees. Now he’s a World Cup winner with more than 200 international caps, a trunk full of awards and an IPL contract which will ensure that investment made by his family will pay off for generations to come. More than that, he has enjoyed a career which made many people smile and many more – not all of them from the traditional breeding grounds of English cricket – feel they could follow in his footsteps. That sounds pretty great, doesn’t it?

History and experience on Netherlands' side against young Ireland set-up

Paul Stirling’s stellar form though, will be a sharp arrow in Ireland’s quiver

One issue for Netherlands could be the relative lack of T20I game-time in the lead up to this tournament•ICC via Getty

Big PictureMake what you will of the format of the T20 World Cup, which essentially tacks a qualifying round on to the front of the tournament proper, but Ireland and Netherlands know exactly what is at stake over the next few days. These two have been here before and, while both teams will have designs on taking down Sri Lanka, the only former World T20 champions obliged to participate in this stage of the competition, there is every chance they will find themselves going head-to-head for one of the two spots available. It was at the 2014 edition in Bangladesh, which Sri Lanka went on to win, that Ireland and Netherlands played out one of the most extraordinary games in the history of the competition. Ireland, knowing that a win in Sylhet would take them through to the Super 10 stage, posted 189 for 4 from their 20 overs; Netherlands were still in contention, but to jump above both their opponents and Zimbabwe on NRR, would need to reach the target inside 14.2 overs. In the event, they needed just 13.5, as Stephan Myburgh – back in the fold for this tournament – blazed 63 off 23 balls at the top of the order and the brilliant Oranje hurtled through to the main event, where they pulled off another memorable scalp by humbling England in Chattogram.Netherlands also got the better of Ireland in a rain-reduced contest at Dharamsala in 2016, and secured passage to the 2020 T20 World Cup (subsequently pushed back by Covid-19) by winning the Qualifer in late 2019. This Dutch squad has been described as one of the best in their history, featuring experienced operators like Ryan ten Doeschate and Roelof van der Merwe alongside younger, in-form players, such as Paul van Meekeren, a member of the title-winning St Kitts & Nevis Patriots at the CPL. But their preparation hasn’t been ideal and they have to start well in what shapes to be a crunch match.Related

'Netherlands cricket is here and it's here to push back,' says coach Campbell

Paul van Meekeren: 'Our seam attack is so talented, I'll need to work my bum off to get a slot to play'

Stirling is glad to be back on the biggest stage again

Stirling's form, starts with O'Brien key for Ireland – Balbirnie

Ireland, meanwhile, have experienced a period of transition from the golden generation that had such an impact at 50-over World Cups between 2007 and 2015. They never hit the same heights in T20, despite beating Bangladesh in 2009, and progression from Group A here would be a significant achievement. With Paul Stirling in the form of his life and some fresh talent beginning to push through – see Gareth Delany’s unbeaten 88 from 50 balls against Bangladesh in the warm-ups – this could be their moment to storm cricket’s top table once again.Players to watchThe partnership of Stirling and Kevin O’Brien at the top of the order is likely to be key for Ireland, as captain Andy Balbirnie noted during the build-up. Since O’Brien, the veteran allrounder and hero of Bangalore in 2011, moved up to open in T20Is two years ago, he and Stirling have scored 1479 runs together at an average of 39.97.Myburgh and ten Doeschate have a combined 78 years between them and will act as standard-bearers, but also watch out for opener Max O’Dowd. In April, he scored 133 not out off 73 balls – the highest T20I score by an Associate and fifth-highest overall. Okay, it was against Malaysia. But only one other batter made more than 31 in the match.Form guideIreland’s build-up has been thorough, if not exactly smooth sailing. They were 3-2 victors over Zimbabwe at home in September but followed that up by losing 2-1 to UAE – who didn’t manage to qualify for the World Cup. In the warm-ups, a straightforward win over Papua New Guinea, with 23-year-old legspinner Ben White impressing, was followed by Delany’s fireworks helping them to upend Bangladesh, suggesting Ireland may have found their stride at the right time. The Dutch have not had much of a chance to fine tune their T20 plans going into the tournament, having last played the format internationally during a tri-series in Nepal in April. They were rumbled for 91 in their first warm-up match, when chasing just 123 to beat Scotland, but put together a more-convincing batting performance in a narrow win over Oman. As a group, they don’t play together often – so they need to gel quickly.Stats that matter Netherlands have an excellent head-to-head record against Ireland in T20s. Going back to the 2014 World T20, they have won seven out of ten meetings, with one abandonment. Stirling was the leading run-scorer at the 2019 Qualifier, with 291 at 41.57. Netherlands’ Brandon Glover was the second-leading wicket-taker (16), with van Meekeren (15) joint-fourth. I don’t think over all these years I’ve been involved in cricket, I’ve ever gone out saying, ‘well, it doesn’t matter if we lose tomorrow’.”
“We don’t disrespect Ireland, we don’t disrespect anyone. We think both teams are full of very good competitors and very good cricketers. But you have to perform on the day.”

Aston Villa make £12.5m bid to sign Barcelona’s Ferran Torres and get reply

Aston Villa have submitted an offer worth £12.5 million to sign a player from Barcelona in January, according to a new report. Morale is extremely high at Villa Park right now, as the Midlands side have once again made an impressive start to the season, and that continued in midweek as they brushed Bologna aside to make it three wins from three in the Champions League.

Despite Villa’s excellent start to the season, they already have their eyes on ways of improving their squad for either when January arrives or for next summer. This is because the Villans were linked with a move for Bryan Mbeumo of Brentford, a player who has made an excellent start to this Premier League campaign.

Mbeumo has been an impressive player for Brentford for a couple of seasons now and has interest from teams such as Villa, Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester City, and Newcastle United. The Villans are now keeping a close eye on the forward ahead of the upcoming transfer windows.

Meanwhile, Villa are also planning to offer goalkeeper Oliwier Zych a new contract, amid interest from teams like Arsenal and Brighton. The 20-year-old has yet to feature for the first team but has been impressing in the under-21s, and given he has caught the attention of other Premier League teams, Villa are keen to tie the shot stopper down to a new deal.

Aston Villa make £12.5m bid to sign Barcelona's Ferran Torres

According to reports from Spain, Aston Villa have submitted a 15 million euros bid (£12.5 million) for Ferran Torres of Barcelona. The Midlands outfit already have plenty of options going forward, but manager Unai Emery is keen to bring in the Spanish forward to further strengthen his options for the rest of the campaign.

Torres, who was hailed as being “brilliant” by Pep Guardiola during his time at Manchester City, has been at Barça since January 2022. This season has been a bit of a struggle for the forward however, as he’s found himself in and out of the starting XI.

The 24 year-old, who earns £165,000 a week, could now be set for a return to England, as Villa have made an offer. However, Barça will only consider selling Torres should a transfer fee of 25 million euros (£21m) be reached.

Barça boss Hansi Flick doesn’t consider Torres an important player in his tactical approach, so Villa are ready to make a move in January, as they see him as a player who can help them in the Premier League and the Champions League, as they look to progress even further in both competitions. Torres is said to be considering an exit, especially if he is given the opportunity to join a team where he is guaranteed more minutes.
