Thisara Perera becomes first Sri Lankan to smash six sixes in an over

Allrounder also makes second-fastest List A half-century along the way

Thisara Perera, the allrounder, became the first Sri Lankan to hit six sixes in an over in any form of professional cricket, on Sunday. En route to his unbeaten 13-ball 52, he also smashed the second-fastest half-century in List A cricket, for Army Sports Cricket Club in SLC’s Major Clubs tournament. The record for fastest fifty is held by former Sri Lanka allrounder Kaushalya Weeraratne, who smashed a 12-ball half-century for Ragana Cricket Club against Kurunegala Youth Cricket Club in November 2005. That knock, an 18-ball 66, consisted of two fours and eight sixes, including five off a single over.Perera, leading Sri Lanka Army Sports Club, walked in to bat at No. 5 with 20 balls remaining in their innings that was truncated to 41-overs-a-side. Part-time offspinner and experienced first-class cricketer Dilhan Cooray, playing for Bloomfield Cricket and Athletic Club, was the bowler at the receiving end of Perera’s onslaught. Cooray went on to concede 73 in four wicketless overs. For the record, the match was abandoned with Bloomfield struggling on 73 for 6 in their chase of 318.Perera is the second cricketer, after West Indies T20I captain Kieron Pollard, to achieve this feat in 2021. Pollard achieved the feat just three weeks prior to Perera’s, when he hit Sri Lanka’s Akila Dhananjaya for six sixes in a T20I in Coolidge. Overall, Perera is part of a small list of nine to have achieved this feat in professional cricket, after Garfield Sobers, Ravi Shastri, Herschelle Gibbs, Yuvraj Singh, Ross Whiteley, Hazratullah Zazai, Leo Carter and Pollard.

Concrete option: Crystal Palace working on deal to help replace Olise

Crystal Palace have made three signings so far this summer, splashing the cash to acquire Ismaila Sarr from Marseille, Chadi Riad from Real Betis, and Daichi Kamada (who joined on a free) from Lazio.

However, the biggest story at Palace this summer, has, of course, been the loss of Michael Olise, who left to join German giants, Bayern Munich, for a fee of around £50m.

Olise made 19 appearances for Palace in the Premier League last season, scoring ten goals, providing six assists, and totalling 1,278 minutes played, with the race still on to help find ways to suitably replace him at Selhurst Park.

Crystal Palace transfer news

According to reports from Florian Plettenberg, Crystal Palace are "exploring a deal" to sign Union Berlin left wingback, Robin Gosens. PSV Eindhoven were also interested. However, their interest has cooled, and Palace is the most "concrete option" at this stage.

Union Berlin still sees Gosens as one of their "key players", and will only negotiate for a suitable offer, of at least €10m (£8.5m).

Gosens made 37 appearances for Union Berlin in all competitions last season, scoring seven goals, providing four assists, and contributing to six clean sheets in 2,748 minutes played.

Gosens vs Olise comparison

One of the main parts of replacing Olise at Palace, is finding a way to replace his goals and assists. Gosens, despite playing as a wingback/fullback more often in recent years, still provides a great level of creativity and output.

Described as "outstanding" by Statman Dave, Gosens has a tendency to arrive in the box, create chances, and find himself in dangerous areas to affect the game, no matter where he is playing on the pitch.

The reason for including Tyrick Mitchell in the comparison table is to show the attacking output a signing such as Gosens could add as the left-wing back in Oliver Glasner's system, as opposed to Mitchell, helping to add those creative numbers back into the side to replace Olise.

Despite playing at wing-back, Gosens produces 3.73 progressive passes per 90 (1.09 more than Mitchell), 1.12 key passes per 90 (0.45 more than Mitchell), and takes 1.25 shots per 90 (0.89 more than Mitchell).

These metrics show the extra attacking qualities Gosens could bring to the team, getting himself into dangerous positions higher up the pitch than Mitchell, shown by his 2.28 penalty area touches per 90, compared to Mitchell's 1.52.

Tyrick Mitchell

The versatility of Gosens is another important factor, as he can play deeper as a left wingback option, as well as higher up as a left-winger if needed, offering tactical versatility for Glasner. If he decided he needed extra defensive cover, he could start both Mitchell and Gosens in the same team.

But you also wouldn't be losing out on defensive qualities when Gosens is playing instead of Mitchell, as the 30-year-old actually averages more blocks and interceptions than Mitchell, with 1.88 blocks per 90, and 1.28 interceptions per 90.

Whilst Gosens doesn't completely replace Olise's creative and attacking metrics, adding him to the squad, alongside other forward signings such as Sarr and Kamada, could equate to replacing those numbers, just through a variety of players, rather than a direct replacement.

As good as Diaz & Salah: Liverpool star is becoming a monster under Slot

Liverpool continued their perfect start to life under Arne Slot in the Premier League with an impressive 3-0 victory over Manchester United on Sunday.

The Reds have now won all three of their top-flight matches without conceding a single goal and are second in the division, only behind Manchester City on goal difference, heading into the first international break.

Much was made of Jurgen Klopp's exit, after almost nine years and Premier League and Champions League trophies, when he made the decision to part ways with the club in the summer.

However, Slot has hit the ground running and implemented his style seamlessly with a terrific start to the 2024/25 campaign, which may have eased any fears about a bumpy transition.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot.

What makes this impressive start to the season all the more eye-catching is that the manager only made one signing during the summer transfer window.

Federico Chiesa arrived on a permanent deal from Juventus towards the end of the window and has yet to make his debut for the club, which means that the players Slot inherited have all adapted to his style quickly.

Luis Diaz and Mo Salah are shining

Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah are two players who have thrived under the new boss in the opening three games of the season, and they were in sublime form against United on Sunday.

The duo linked up for the opening goal in the first half as the Egypt international was played in down the right channel and clipped a delightful ball to the back post for his teammate to head the ball into a virtually empty net.

It was the same combination again for the second goal before the break, with Salah prodding the ball across for Diaz to brilliantly slide a shot into the bottom right corner.

The Liverpool icon went from provider to scorer in the second half as he walked onto a pass from Dominik Szoboszlai to slot the ball into the corner past Andre Onana, ending the game with one goal and two assists.

As you can see in the table above, the wing wizards have now combined for six goals and four assists in the first three games of the Premier League season.

Slot's exciting, progressive, style of football has put both players in positions to cause constant problems for opposition full-backs, and it has resulted in them providing regular quality in the final third.

However, they were not the only stars of the win at Old Trafford as Szoboszlai was as good as Salah and Diaz with his display in the number ten position.

Dominik Szoboszlai's performance against United

Szoboszlai, who was handed a player rating of 8/10 by 90min writer Jude Summerfield, put in a fantastic display in the middle of the park against Erik ten Hag's side.

Firstly, the Hungary international did not stop running from minute one to minute 90. His incredible engine was there for all to see with his superb pressing work to ensure that United's players did not have time and space to do what they wanted to do in possession, in the areas that he was covering.

Dominik Szoboszlai scores for Liverpool

The former RB Leipzig star won four of his six physical duels out of possession, all of which came on the ground, and made three tackles and one interception throughout the match, which illustrates his defensive impact for Liverpool to help his side to another clean sheet.

In possession, Szoboszlai was uber reliable for Slot in the role behind the front three, as he completed 90% of his attempted passes, with 35 out of 39 passes completed.

That did not take away from his creativity and risk-taking in the final third, however, as the Hungarian maestro provided an assist for Salah's goal with a drive through the middle and lay-off to the winger.

His assist for the Liverpool forward was one of three key passes made throughout the match, to go along with a 100% success rate in long passes and crosses (2/2).

Overall, it was a phenomenal shift from Szoboszlai, who proved his worth to the team in and out of possession, as he matched Diaz and Salah as one of the top performers in the team.

Slot is turning Szoboszlai into a monster

With a lack of signings during the summer transfer window, Slot had to improve the players he already had at his disposal when he arrived and the Dutchman appears to have done that already with the Hungary international.

Szoboszlai has produced two 'big chances' and registered one assist in the first three matches of the season, which shows that he has started the campaign in fine form offensively.

Dominik Szoboszlai for Liverpool.

His work out of possession has not suffered as a result of that, though, as the central midfielder has averaged 6.3 ball recoveries per game and won 50% of his ground duels, compared to 5.2 recoveries and a 42% ground duel success rate in the Premier League last term.

Albeit based on a small sample size, the ex-Bundesliga starlet has improved his defensive work by winning possession back more frequently and more efficiently.

As you can see in the table above, the 23-year-old maestro's use of the ball has also improved under Slot on the evidence of this season so far.

He has been more secure in his passing whilst also offering more creativity, averaging 1.0 more key passes per match, and this suggests that the manager has helped him to be more efficient and effective in a number ten, or advanced eight, position.

These statistics show that the Dutch head coach is turning Szoboszlai into a midfield monster who can make a big impact in and out of possession for Liverpool and, hopefully, it will continue for the rest of the 2024/25 campaign.

New Zealand Women contracts: Thamsyn Newton back, Brooke Halliday among three new faces

Katie Perkins, Holly Huddleston, Anna Peterson and Natalie Dodd left out of the list

Brooke Halliday, Frances Mackay and Jess McFadyen are the brand-new faces in the list of centrally contracted New Zealand Women players, while Thamsyn Newton has made a comeback after featuring in the contracts last in 2018. Missing out in the latest list are Katie Perkins, Holly Huddleston, Anna Peterson and Natalie Dodd.A total of 17 cricketers have been awarded contracts by NZC in what is a World Cup season – the global 50-over competition is scheduled to be played at home for New Zealand in March-April next year. “The overriding criteria is a player’s likely playing value to NZC for the contract year ahead with some emphasis on their performance in the previous 12 month period,” the board said in a statement.NZ Women – 2021-22 contracts

Suzie Bates, Sophie Devine, Lauren Down, Maddy Green, Brooke Halliday, Hayley Jensen, Leigh Kasperek, Amelia Kerr, Jess Kerr, Frankie Mackay, Jess McFadyen, Rosemary Mair, Katey Martin, Thamsyn Newton, Hannah Rowe, Amy Satterthwaite, Lea Tahuhu

Halliday, a 25-year-old batter, made a bright start to her ODI career when she hit 50 and 60 in her first two games in the format, against England at home in February this year. She averages 34.00 and strikes at 75.55 in six games.”Getting a contract tells me that what I’ve done in the last four months in the White Ferns environment has impressed the coaches and selectors,” Halliday said. “It gives me that reassurance that I do belong in the White Ferns environment and that I’m good enough to be there. It gives me more confidence and reassurance going into the camps for the England tour.”Mackay, meanwhile, is an experienced 30-year-old allrounder who has played 21 ODIs and 30 T20Is since her international debut in 2011, and McFayden is a 29-year-old wicketkeeper who hasn’t played internationally yet.”Brooke and Frankie’s performances last season were very encouraging and we’re looking forward to working closely with those two over the winter,” head coach Bob Carter said. “Both have leadership experience at the domestic level and have plenty to add to the group off the park as well as on it. Jess McFadyen is an exciting prospect and had strong campaigns in both the Dream11 Super Smash and Hallyburton Johnstone Shield.”We need to develop our wicketkeepers and Jess has shown ability over several seasons now. She has a wise head on her shoulders and will be an asset to the group, I’m sure.”Medium-pacer Newton earned a recall to the New Zealand T20I squad earlier this year following a strong showing in the Super Smash competition, where she picked up seven wickets with an economy rate of 7.05 while also scoring some useful runs with the bat. Overall, the 25-year-old has played ten ODIs and 12 T20Is, for a total of 20 wickets. Newton had been contracted between 2016 and 2018 but was dropped after that. The team will assemble at Lincoln University on June 7 for a training camp. They are expected to travel to England in late August for a series of three T20Is and five ODIs, all in September.

Trevor Bayliss and David Saker have returned to the BBL in head coach roles for Sydney Thunder and Melbourne Renegades respectively.Bayliss, the former England coach who led them to the 2019 World Cup, has signed for three years and replaces Shane Bond at the Thunder after he opted against a contract extension to spend more time at home.Saker, who has been a fast-bowling coach for Australia, England and Sri Lanka, will have the task of turning around the fortunes of the Renegades who have finished bottom in the last two seasons with just seven wins in 28 matches. Both have previously been head coaches in the BBL. Bayliss was in charge of Sydney Sixers from 2011 to 2015 which included their title success in the inaugural 2011-12 season while Saker was a past Renegades coach for one campaign in 2015-16.Bayliss, who is currently coach of Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL, is also a former New South Wales coach and was excited at the prospect of rejoining the cricket system in the state.”It’s great to be home and involved in New South Wales cricket,” he said. “The Thunder have done well over the last few years… hopefully we can go one or two steps further this summer.”One of Bayliss’ early jobs will be deciding on a new captain following the departure of Callum Ferguson who was not offered a new contract after last season.Saker’s deal is for two seasons and despite back-to-back wooden spoons since the club won the title in 2018-19 he is confident with the players that have been retained.”We’ve got a talented squad with some class and power at the top of the order, complemented by a strong bowling attack and some exciting young talent,” he said. “We’ll be looking to add to this group over the next few months to ensure we’ve got plenty of options when the season gets underway.”The Big Bash has continued to grow since my last involvement and it’s more competitive than ever on the field so I’m looking forward to working with the playing group to ensure we give ourselves every chance of success.”Current Thunder squad Jonathan Cook, Ben Cutting, Matthew Gilkes, Chris Green, Usman Khawaja, Nathan McAndrew, Alex Ross, Daniel Sams, Tanveer Sangha, Chris TremainCurrent Renegades squad Cameron Boyce, Zak Evans, Aaron Finch, Jake Fraser-McGurk, Sam Harper, Marcus Harris, Mackenzie Harvey, Josh Lalor, Shaun Marsh, James Pattinson, Mitch Perry, Jack Prestwidge, Kane Richardson, Will Sutherland

Tottenham to start working on their next £25m+ signing for Ange Postecoglou

Tottenham are set to begin work on a potential new signing for Ange Postecoglou in the transfer windows to come, it has been reported, as they look to get a headstart on the competition for his services.

Spurs suffer mixed start to the Premier League

In 2023/24, Ange Postecoglou's new-look Tottenham side set Premier League records, with eight wins and two draws in their opening 10 games seeing them take home 26 points, the most of any manager in their first 10 matches in the competition's history. This time around, expectations are higher and they are yet to truly impress in the same way that they did this time 12 months ago.

They sit 10th in the Premier League over the first international break, having lost to Newcastle United at St James' Park to leave them sat on four points from their opening three games, with a draw at Leicester City on the opening day being followed with a win over Everton.

Ange could unearth his next Bentancur in "top" Spurs academy teen

The Lilywhites talent looks like a promising young player for Ange Postecoglou to work with.

ByDan Emery Sep 9, 2024

There are concerns over squad depth too, with Spurs having seen a whole host of players leave over the summer and now looking light in some areas beyond the first XI. This is especially true of the defence, where all four of Tottenham's regular starters missed games last season; Radu Dragusin was recruited in January from Genoa, while Djed Spence's return is likely to counteract Emerson Royal's departure for AC Milan.

But left-back remains a concern, with no obvious replacement for Destiny Udogie in the Lilywhites squad and the Italian international having missed 10 games last season through injury and suspension, with Sergio Reguilon deemed surplus to requirements. Now, Spurs are moving to deal with that.

Spurs working to sign "Udogie 2.0"

That comes as Sport Witness relay claims in Italy suggesting that Spurs are "ready to launch an attack" to sign Patrick Dorgu from Lecce this season. The 19-year-old defender was on the Lilywhites radar over the summer as well as Chelsea's, and has enjoyed a strong start to the season for both club and country.

He scored less than a minute into his Denmark debut to help them secure a 2-0 win over Switzerland, before being offered another chance off the bench against Serbia.

Now, the report claims that it could well be "too late" if Tottenham or any other interested club to wait until the end of the campaign to try and sign the defender, and as a result they are ready to start contacts now to try and secure a deal early for a future transfer window, similar to how they negotiated the deal to sign Udogie.

Indeed, Dorgu isn't too different from the Italian defender, with Football Analyst Ben Mattinson dubbing him "Destiny Udogie 2.0" on X and adding that he is "the modern full-back dream" as he "oozes calmness and composure when on the ball".

If Tottenham are serious about their interest, they will have to stump up a hefty fee, with Lecce reportedly holding out for offers in excess of 30m euros (£25m), which is a similar fee to that commanded by Udogie when he was signed. But if Postecoglou's side could pull off the deal, they could well have their left-back role sorted for the next decade.
