Kyle Jamieson plays down expectations after 'surreal' auction night

“For me, it’s about how can I learn, how can I grow, and focusing on trying to do the job for the team at that time”

Deivarayan Muthu19-Feb-20213:28

Have RCB sorted their batting out?

Kyle Jamieson had originally planned to sleep through the IPL auction, like Jimmy Neesham, but then woke up at around midnight in Christchurch to watch the Royal Challengers Bangalore, the Delhi Capitals and the Punjab Kings bid furiously for him. The 6’8″ quick ended up attracting the day’s second-highest winning bid, with Mike Hesson’s Royal Challengers signing him up for INR 15 crore (USD 2 million approx).”It was pretty surreal, really, and it’s such a unique experience to watch yourself go through an auction like that in the early hours of the morning,” Jamieson said. “And I think it’s probably still trying to sink in a little bit and try to take in…Related

Six talking points from the auction (besides the millionaires)

Why teams broke the bank for Morris, Jamieson, Gowtham and Meredith

“Yeah, it was weird, there’s no textbook to say how to approach that sort of stuff – that’s probably how I’ve tried to take it. It’s such a unique experience and it’s trying to embrace the whole situation of it all as just try to, I guess, enjoy the moment.”Having watched the madness unfold, Jamieson first called up his partner and then his parents.”I actually called my partner and actually woke her up,” Jamieson said. “She was asleep, and that was a pretty cool moment. Kind of sit back and there wasn’t a whole lot of words to be spoken to be fair, but then called mum and dad – they were up as well. Did that and then turned the phone off and tried to get some sleep.”Jamieson was also pleased to share the moment with former New Zealand quick Shane Bond who incidentally will plot against Jamieson in the Mumbai Indians backroom in the forthcoming IPL.”I had a message from Shane Bond as it [auction] was going and he was sort of saying, ‘How good is this!’ I didn’t actually know what the amount of money was and how that translated to New Zealand dollars,” Jamieson said. “It was quite cool to share that moment with him and sort of ride that two or three minutes with him.”Having become the highest-paid New Zealander at an IPL auction – his senior fast-bowling partner Trent Boult had previously attracted a bid of INR 5 crore from the Kolkata Knight Riders in 2017 – Jamieson is now preparing to buy coffee and beer for his team-mates and also cop some friendly banter from them.”Yeah, I think there will be a bit [of banter] from Boult, [Tim] Southee etc. So, no, it’s all part of it, and there’s a lot of banter thrown around in this group anyway and it’s such an enjoyable place to be. It’s all harmless and just good fun.”‘I accept that there will be expectations but that’s been the case the whole time I’ve played’•Getty Images

Jamieson was looking forward to linking up with a star-studded RCB contingent, which also includes Australia allrounder Glenn Maxwell who was signed for INR 14.25 crore (USD 1.95 million approx).”I think it’s such a special experience and I think [I’m] so fortunate to go to a team with superstars of the game like that,” Jamieson said. “They’ve had success for such a long period of time – those guys…Just to rub shoulders with them and try to learn and grow as a cricketer is something that I’m relishing.”Jamieson has never played competitive cricket in India previously, and the hefty price tag could invite pressure, but he downplayed it and hoped to pick up new tricks. His maiden IPL stint could potentially tune him up for the T20 World Cup, which is also slated to be held in India later this year.”To be fair, I don’t think a whole lot changes to me,” Jamieson said. “I accept that there will be expectations but that’s been the case the whole time I’ve played. When you play your first one-day game, first Test, and different series, there’s always expectation, but it’s probably more externally than it is with me. For me, it’s about how can I learn, how can I grow, and focusing on trying to do the job for the team at that time.”Shane Jurgensen, the New Zealand bowling coach, also believed Jamieson wouldn’t be distracted by the price tag and backed him to succeed in India with his pace and bounce.”He won’t change,” Jurgensen said. “He will still do his thing, his preparation, and he works hard. Like all our guys, he will do what he does. I think he will take it and he’s a very level young man – he’s worked hard on a lot of areas in his game and as I said it’s [a] reward for all he’s done.”After Jamieson bagged 6 for 7 – the best figures by a New Zealander and the fifth-best overall in T20 cricket – in the Super Smash on New Year’s Day in 2019, Hesson had tweeted: “An impressive bowler who at 6ft 8in can swing it… another one to add to the @BLACKCAPS stable.” Jamieson has since broken into New Zealand’s side across formats, most notably playing a crucial hand in their run to the WTC final, and now Hesson has added Jamieson to the RCB stable as well.

Celtic remain keen on "tenacious" star who could help to replace O’Riley

Celtic could not have dreamed of a much better start to their 2024/25 campaign as they beat Kilmarnock 4-0 in their first match of the Scottish Premiership season.

The Hoops secured all three points in entertaining fashion, with four different goalscorers, to shoot themselves straight to the top of the table.

Reo Hatate, Liam Scales, Nicolas Kuhn, and Anthony Ralston all found the back of the net in a game in which only one new signing featured for the club.

Goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel, who was brought in to replace Joe Hart between the sticks, kept a clean sheet in a relatively comfortable evening for him at Parkhead.

Celtic target Kasper Schmeichel in action for Denmark.

Meanwhile, Paulo Bernardo and Viljami Sinisalo – the club's only other signings this summer – were both unused substitutes for the Scottish giants.

The summer transfer window does not slam shut until the end of this month, though, and this means that there is still plenty of time for Celtic to make further additions to their squad.

Brendan Rodgers and his recruitment team are putting in plenty of work behind the scenes to bolster the manager's options across the park, with a Premiership star reportedly on their radar.

Celtic interested in Premiership dynamo

According to Sky Sports journalist Anthony Joseph, Celtic have been monitoring the situation of Dundee central midfielder Luke McCowan this summer.

The reporter claims that the Scottish giants and MLS clubs have been keeping tabs on the Scottish midfield ace, which shows that they remain keen on the left-footed whiz.

Joseph adds, though, that Hibernian and Bolton have had offers rejected by Dundee for their captain, although there is no mention of how much those bids were worth.

The journalist also does not reveal how much Dundee would be willing to cash in on their skipper for, with his current contract due to expire at the end of this season.

He claims that Bolton and Hibs both remain interested in a deal for the 5 foot 8 star, who writer Kai Watson described as "tenacious", which means that Celtic would face plenty of competition for his signature if they decide to act upon their interest in him.

The Hoops could need to move for a midfielder amid speculation over Matt O'Riley's future. West Ham United and Chelsea are the latest clubs to reportedly hold an interest in the Danish star.

Southampton are also reportedly set to make a second offer for the former MK Dons man, who worked with Russell Martin during their time in League One.

What Celtic would be losing if they sold Matt O'Riley

Selling O'Riley this summer would be a huge blow for the Scottish giants due to the quality he is able to provide on a consistent basis from a midfield position.

The left-footed magician has the ability to be a difference maker in the final third week-in-week-out and this means that he is a valuable player for Rodgers, as he can win games on his own with his goals and assists.

He provided interested clubs, and Celtic, with a timely reminder of his quality on the opening day of the season against Kilmarnock on Sunday.

Celtic midfielder Matt O'Riley.

The Denmark international created a staggering seven chances for his teammates at Parkhead and registered one assist – for Scales' header from a corner.

Last season, the 23-year-old was crucial to Rodgers' side with his exceptional contributions as both a scorer and a creator of goals for the Hoops.

O'Riley played a huge role in the club's Premiership success by popping up with big moments throughout the season, thanks to his ability in the final third.

As you can see in the table above, no Celtic player was involved in more goals or assists than than the Chelsea, Southampton, and West Ham target.

Premier League sides have emerged as suitors for the midfield star and it is no surprise when you consider his phenomenal form as an attacking force from midfield for the Premiership champions.

It would take a lot to replace his goals and assists but the signing of McCowan could help, in part, to start to replace the Danish magician's contributions.

Why Celtic should sign Luke McCowan

Celtic may not be able to sign a player who would almost guarantee to replace the 18 goals and 13 assists that O'Riley provided the team with but they could sign multiple players to make up for the goals and assists that would be lost.

The Hoops could also hope that stars like Hatate, who caught the eye with a goal on Sunday, step up and become even more important with more pressure on their shoulders.

McCowan is one star who could be brought in to provide an attacking boost from a midfield position, as he has the quality to score and assist goals from the middle of the park.

Whilst playing for Dundee, who did not challenge at the top end of the table, the Scottish ace contributed with ten goals and five assists in 37 appearances.

O'Riley was the only Celtic midfielder who managed more than seven goals in the division, which suggests that McCowan could provide a much-needed goal threat from that position.

McCowan has also started the current campaign in similar form with an exceptional display against Dundee United in the opening day derby at the weekend.

As you can see in the table above, the Dundee star produced a fantastic all-round performance with one goal, two chances created, and multiple defensive interventions in the 2-2 draw.

McCowan is unlikely to come in and produce 18 goals and 13 assists in one season, like O'Riley, but he is a proven Premiership performer who can chip in with goals and assists.

Dream Duran replacement: Aston Villa submit bid for £15m "monster"

Unai Emery is showing no signs of slowing down when it comes to securing more new signings for Aston Villa.

After eight summer arrivals, the Spaniard is now seeking a few more players to give his side that added quality heading into the 2024/25 campaign.

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery

It looks as though he is turning to Turkey with regard to his next target…

Latest on Aston Villa's search for a striker

According to Turkish outlet Sabah (via Sport Witness), Villa have reportedly made a bid for Besiktas striker Semih Kılıçsoy as they step up their interest in bringing the player to the Premier League.

Fulham made an offer for the striker, which was subsequently rejected by the club, before Villa submitted a proposal of around €18m (£15m), although this offer was also rejected by Besiktas as they look to keep one of their most promising talents.

The report states that it is uncertain whether Villa will make another approach for the 18-year-old before the window slams shut, but they could face competition from Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal, who have all been linked with the youngster at various times since the window opened.

There is no doubting the fact Emery requires another centre-forward in his squad. Could Kılıçsoy replace Jhon Duran?

Semih Kılıçsoy’s season in numbers

It looks as though Duran’s future lies away from Villa, despite a report from Football Insider claiming both Chelsea and West Ham United have withdrawn their interest in the Colombian.

The report states that Villa will still consider offers as they look to offload the youngster before the summer transfer window closes.

If he does leave, then Emery will need to sign another centre-forward, hence the interest in Kılıçsoy.

The youngster only made his debut for Besiktas during the 2022/23 campaign but emerged as one of the finest young players in Turkey last year, scoring 11 league goals in just 23 matches, chipping in with three assists too.

The 18-year-old also created four big chances, succeeded with 1.7 dribble attempts and averaged 0.7 key passes per game, proving that he is more than just a clinical finisher in front of goal.

He was hailed by analyst Ben Mattinson earlier this year amid his breakthrough, who said: “Semih Kılıçsoy really is one to look out for. No surprise at all to me that so many clubs are watching him. Semih won’t be in Turkey much longer.

“Physical monster too, big reason why he’s taken to senior football so well (in addition to his killer instinct, creativity and IQ).”

If Emery could somehow lure him to Villa Park, he could sign a prodigious talent who may go from strength to strength.

There is no doubt he could be an ideal replacement for Duran, especially considering he has shown evidence of his success in a major European league.

Much will depend on how much Besiktas value the striker, but if it is within Villa’s budget, then they should be going all out to sign him.

Finn Allen gets New Zealand T20I call-up, Adam Milne returns

Six IPL-bound players, including Kane Williamson, will miss the series against Bangladesh

ESPNcricinfo staff23-Mar-2021Finn Allen has been handed his first New Zealand call-up for the T20I series against Bangladesh, in a squad missing six IPL-bound players, while Adam Milne is in line for a return to international cricket after more than two years out of the side with a variety of injuries. Will Young, who has made his Test and ODI debuts this season, is also included in the T20I squad for the first time and Lockie Ferguson is set for his comeback following the back injury that has kept him sidelined since December. The side will be captained by Tim Southee with Kane Williamson, who has sat out the ODI series with an elbow injury, given a break before heading to the IPL along with Trent Boult, Mitchell Santner, Kyle Jamieson, Jimmy Neesham and Tim Seifert.Allen (Royal Challengers Bangalore), Milne (Mumbai Indians) and Ferguson (Kolkata Knight Riders) will head to India straight after the conclusion of the series against Bangladesh.Finn Allen broke through into the New Zealand T20I team•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

The 21-year-old Allen has been one of the breakout stars of the domestic season where he plundered 512 runs in the Super Smash for Wellington”It’s especially an exciting time for Finn, who will be getting his first taste of the Black Caps environment,” selector Gavin Larsen said. “His Super Smash campaign with the Firebirds was nothing short of outstanding and we believe he has the skills to succeed at the next level.”We’re delighted to see Lockie and Adam return after working really hard to get back to this point. They are two of the premier fast bowlers in world cricket and it’s fantastic to be able to call on their services, in what is shaping as a big year of T20 cricket.Related

In Seifert’s absence, Devon Conway will take the wicketkeeping gloves. There are two legspinners in the squad with Todd Astle joining Ish Sodhi.”It’s certainly been a season like no other and once again we’ve had to be pragmatic in our approach,” Larsen said. “The six guys who will miss this series are incumbents in our T20 side and the decision to give them some time at home with family before they embark on a long stint in India, was principally made with their welfare in mind.”We’re also very aware of the need to give others opportunities in a World Cup year and it’s great to be able to introduce Finn and Will to the set-up, as well as welcome back Lockie and Adam.”Tim’s a great leader in any Black Caps side, we’ve seen how well he’s slipped into the T20 captain’s position in the past and we look forward to him continuing to grow in the role.”Devon’s wicketkeeping skills are a real asset to have in a squad and we’re keen to ensure he has some international experience in this role to provide us with another option going forward.”
