Talks open: £15m Man City player set to leave as club close in on transfer

A £15m player could now seal an exit away from Manchester City in the summer transfer window, according to a fresh transfer update.

Man City transfer news

Exciting transfer rumours continue to circulate at the Etihad, with Spain star Dani Olmo reportedly closing in on a move this summer, fresh off the back of a hugely successful Euro 2024 campaign with his country. He ended the tournament as joint-top scorer, having initially been behind Pedri in the pecking order, doing no harm to his reputation whatsoever.

An alternative to Olmo has also reportedly been lined up, with Crystal Palace and England ace Eberechi Eze also seen as an option to come in. The 26-year-old isn't without suitors this summer, however, and the Eagles will find it hard to keep hold of one of their most prized assets.

Adam Wharton's stock has risen greatly this year, having surprisingly made England's Euros squad, and he has been linked with a summer switch to City, too. The 20-year-old looks like a player of huge potential and could be considered a long-term replacement for Rodri in the deep-lying midfield role, even though matching the legendary Spaniard could be extremely difficult.

Then there's Joao Neves, who is also wanted by the likes of Liverpool as well as City, who could cost as much as £105m, having emerged as a massive prospect at Benfica.

£15m Man City player set to leave

According to a new report from Football Insider, Manchester City have "given the green light" for Callum Doyle to leave the club in the current window, valuing him at £15m.

The report also states that "Norwich are in talks" to sign the 20-year-old, with "other Championship clubs" also believed to be interested in snapping him up. It is the Canaries who are "close" to completing a deal, although it doesn't state if it will be a loan or a permanent transfer.

This summer feels like the natural time for Doyle to head out again, with his current contract not expiring until 2027, allowing the club to make good money for him or to gain more experience on loan. Former manager at Coventry City, Mark Robins, has lavished him with praise in the past, making it clear how highly he thinks of him:

"I think he’s a really talented player who has everything he needs to have a brilliant career in the game. Technically he’s very, very good and he’s learning the other bits and pieces. There’s clearly more work to be done and that will determine where he will end up playing the majority of his career. But he’s at a brilliant football club [in Manchester City]. They have great coaches there as well, and have done a great job with him so we have been the beneficiaries of his talents this year."

Priority target: Rangers discussing move for dream Cantwell replacement

Glasgow Rangers are in urgent need of new signings. Yes, the Ibrox side may have already secured the services of seven new players, but in reality, not all of them are quite ready for the rigours and demands of senior football at the present time.

This means Philippe Clement must make another two or three additions in the next week or so to bulk out his first-team squad, especially in the midfield area.

Joan Jordan, the Sevilla midfielder, emerged as a target a couple of weeks ago, with Fabrizio Romano sharing that the Gers had an offer rejected for the player.

It was a loan offer, yet the La Liga side didn’t have plans to cover any of his salary for him to move to Scotland.

Now, according to Fernando Serrano, Rangers have submitted a new bid, offering to cover 40% of his wages while on loan. Could this see the Spanish veteran arrive at Ibrox shortly?

He might not be the only player to make the move north, as Clement is in talks to sign a young talent from the Premier League…

Rangers closing in on move to sign Premier League midfielder

According to Africa Foot, the Light Blues are in advanced talks to seal a loan deal for Hannibal Mejbri, who is currently playing for Manchester United, with the youngster deemed to be a 'priority target'.

Danish side FC Copenhagen are also considered to be in the running for the Tunisian international midfielder, but it appears that his preference is to move to Rangers as he seeks regular first-team football.

Mejbri featured for United against the Light Blues in the recent pre-season friendly at Murrayfield Stadium last week. His performance clearly impressed Clement, who is now close to bringing another new signing to the club.

This move may have been acted on quicker than usual due to Todd Cantwell handing in a transfer request at the club as he seeks a move away from the Light Blues.

Todd Cantwell's future at Rangers

Following the friendly defeat to Birmingham City on Wednesday evening, Clement spoke to the press afterwards.

"I just want to clarify something. Todd Cantwell came to my office a while ago. We have a really good relationship and we talked a long time about that,” said the Belgian.

"He came a while ago to say he feels ready for another adventure, that he wants another challenge.”

Rangers midfielder Todd Cantwell.

The Englishman only joined in January 2023, making 64 appearances in all competitions, scoring 14 times while grabbing 12 assists, not bad statistics, yet he failed to really make an impression when it truly mattered.

Injury issues hampered his first full season at Ibrox, failing to really make his mark when the club were challenging Celtic for the Premiership title.

The truth is, he failed to really build upon his first few months at the club, where he registered 11 goal contributions in just 20 games, looking like he could turn into a solid signing by Michael Beale.

If Clement can make a substantial profit on the former Norwich City gem, then it could fund future arrivals.

Hannibal Mejbri's 2023/24 season in numbers

The Man United youngster is clearly desperate for some regular first-team football in order to make his mark in the senior game.

Hannibal Mejbri

Last season, he made just ten appearances for the Old Trafford side during the first half of the season, scoring against Brighton, yet Erik ten Hag only started the playmaker four times.

This led to the 21-year-old joining Sevilla for a six-month loan spell, but it didn’t quite work out as planned, playing just six times for the Spanish side.

Prior to that, the Tunisian had shone in the Championship with Birmingham City during the 2022/23 season, gaining regular first-team football at a high level.

Why Mejbri can be the perfect Cantwell replacement

Throughout his entire loan spell, Mejbri missed just eight league matches, showing that he was fit for the vast majority of the campaign.

During those 38 games, he registered six goal contributions – one goal and five assists – created six big chances, averaged 0.9 key passes and 0.5 successful dribbles per match.

Among his teammates, he ranked second in the squad for big chances created, third for key passes per game and tenth for successful dribbles each match. The statistics may not be outstanding, but it gave the United supporters a glimpse of his talents in the second tier.

It wasn’t just his attacking talents on show, as his work rate during games for the Blues was impressive, with John Eustace even praising him after just a few months at the club, saying:

"The way he has played in the last couple of games has been phenomenal," he said. "He has broken records for total distance [covered], all that kind of stuff.

Rangers in advanced talks to sign "phenomenal" £15k-a-week ace with Cerny

He plays for a Premier League giant currently.

ByHenry Jackson Jul 26, 2024

"It was important we also used the squad. [Juninho] Bacuna came in today and did well and Hanni came on for that last half hour and was very good.”

While Cantwell could flick a switch and turn on the magic at a whim, his work rate at times wasn’t exactly excellent.

It appears as though this side of the game is what Mejbri – who has been dubbed "relentless" by journalist Steven Railston – embraces and Clement requires players who are willing to fight until the very end, something which the Ibrox faithful didn’t see too often during the dying embers of last season.

If the club do sign Jordan, his experience at the heart of the midfield, coupled with Mejbri’s prodigious attacking talents, could see the pair form a juicy partnership through the centre of the field for the club next term.

It will be a gamble, no doubt about that, but there is no doubt that if the promising midfielder can secure a regular spot in the starting XI, he could cause chaos among opposition defences.

Sydney Thunder have suffered a blow in their bid to cement a spot in the BBL finals with allrounder Daniel Sams ruled out of the remainder of the regular season with a hand injury.Sams landed heavily on his right hand when fielding off his own bowling against Hobart Hurricanes in Canberra on Monday and though he was able to continue his spell after treatment subsequent scans have shown bone and ligament damage. It is hoped he will recover to play in the finals if the Thunder make it that far. They are currently well placed in third, but only four points separate the teams in second and seventh.”Daniel fell awkwardly onto his right hand and wrist while fielding off his own bowling,” said the Thunder’s physiotherapist Murray Ryan. “Scans completed yesterday have indicated a bone and ligament injury that has been reviewed by a hand specialist.”Dan has subsequently been ruled out of the final three Thunder round games. His timeline for a return to play will be determined by medical staff following these games.”Sams has had an impressive season so far, particularly with his rejuvenated batting where he has scored 199 runs at a strike-rate of 191.34 and has also collected 10 wickets in nine matches. He missed two games earlier in the tournament due to concussion. The Thunder’s group-stage campaign finishes with a match against leaders Sydney Sixers and two games against Adelaide Strikers. The top five teams move into the finals series with the sides finishing in the top two getting a second chance to reach the final on February 6

When Kyle Jarvis had Covid-19, malaria and tick bite fever

The Zimbabwe fast bowler won’t be able to play cricket for up to six months as he recovers from a trio of infectious illnesses

Zimbabwean quick Kyle Jarvis won’t be able to play cricket for up to six months as he recovers from a trio of infectious illnesses – Covid-19, malaria and tick bite fever – that struck him at the same time but considers himself one of the luckiest survivors around. Jarvis was diagnosed at the end of January and received top-quality medical care which he recognised is not accessible to everyone in his country, or on his continent and is willing to bide his time back to full fitness.”At the Borrowdale Trauma Centre, there are only four private beds at the hospital and I had one of them. The other three were empty. I was very lucky that I have private medical care. If you are someone who is not as fortunate, it would have been a lot scarier,” Jarvis told ESPNcricinfo from his home in Harare.Jarvis first felt symptoms of coronavirus on the morning of Tuesday, January 26. “I had just got back from a fitness session and I felt very hot. Then, I started to get fever, body aches, nausea and headaches and so I thought it was Covid-19 and isolated, but it got progressively worse,” he said.Four days later, on Saturday, January 30, Jarvis felt his condition was “too bad for me to stay at home,” and decided to seek medical care. His wife, Kelsey, who had been taking care of him and home and displayed none of the same symptoms, took him to the Borrowdale Trauma Centre, an upmarket medical facility considered to be the best in the country. There, they told him his “heart rate was above 220 beats per minute which is close to cardiac arrest and that’s when the panic set in.”Jarvis was taken for blood tests and put on an oxygen supply until doctors had determined the cause of his symptoms, which they found to be multi-fold. “At first, they didn’t tell me I had all three (conditions) maybe because they thought I would have panicked more. My wife only told me towards the end of the day,” he said. “I didn’t react too badly because I knew they could treat malaria and tick bite fever and I was actually relieved I was on the right track.”Jarvis was sent home and required to return to the hospital every day for the next five days “They put me on more oxygen each time and gave me drips. I had to spend three to four hours there a day receiving treatment,” he said.By the beginning of February he began to feel better. Although he says his “voice is not 100%,” Jarvis sounds unusually upbeat for someone who will have at least medium-term effects. “I had a CT scan which showed some damage to the lungs from Covid-19 so the doctors think it will be between three and six months before I make a full recovery and will be on blood thinners for the next few months,” he said. “It’s frustrating and upsetting but when you’re been through something like that, you’re just happy to be returning to health”.Yesterday, Jarvis felt well enough to share his ordeal on social media.

Today, he took a four kilometre walk around his neighbourhood. Next week, when Zimbabwe leave for a two-Test and three T20 series in the UAE against Afghanistan, Jarvis will be trying to walk a little further, or a little faster. And in two months’ time, when Pakistan visit, he may be starting to bowl again. But he has no timeline for when he thinks he will be ready for competitive cricket and no sense that the environment is too risky for professional sport to be played. “The world needs to try and carry on and sport brings people hope,” he said. “Even if there’s no crowd, it lets people feel that we may have some kind of normalcy.”Jarvis also cautioned other sportsmen that just because they are elite athletes does not mean they are immune to unpredictability of Covid-19. “I took it for granted that I’m young and fit so I thought that even if I get it, I wouldn’t have much of an issue. But it can happen to anyone and there’s always that chance that you could get something else and that’s scary,” he said. “Everyone is at risk of getting it.”Zimbabwe has fared better than its neighbouring country, South Africa, in coronavirus infection and death rate with under 35,000 cases and less than 1,500 deaths. However, it is severely under-resourced and continues to maintain strict restrictions to prevent overwhelming the country’s limited medical services. The country is currently at Level 4 of a five-stage lockdown in which only mining, manufacturing and agricultural services are allowed to operate as normal and a 6pm to 6am curfew is in force.Professional sports training and matches are allowed to take place although Jarvis has not seen his team-mates since late last year, with the Zimbabwe men’s team only reporting for a camp this week, ahead of their tour to the UAE. And he understands it may be some months before he sees and trains with them again. “I’m not in a hurry. I am feeling okay now and I’ll do my best to be back to normal when I can,” he said.

£45m Liverpool player could quit after he was included in Gordon swap offer

A £45m-rated Liverpool player could now decide to quit Anfield after learning he was involved in a potential swap deal this summer, according to a fresh transfer claim.

Liverpool transfer rumours

The Reds are believed to be in the mix to sign Wolves winger Pedro Neto in the summer transfer window, being seen as an alternative to Anthony Gordon. While the Portuguese's injuries are a concern, Arne Slot could see him as a superb additional option in attack, having racked up nine assists in 18 starts in the Premier League last season.

In defence, a new centre-back could be ideal for Slot, as he looks to replace the departed Joel Matip and provide more competition for others, and Juventus ace Gleison Bremer has been linked with a move to Liverpool. The Brazilian has impressed in Turin since arriving from Torino in 2022, averaging four clearances per game in Serie A in 2023/24.

Fabinho arguably hasn't yet been fully replaced at Anfield, even though Wataru Endo has done a solid job sitting in front of the defence, and PSV Eindhoven ace Joey Veerman has been backed to help fill that void before next season gets underway. He featured six times for the Netherlands at Euro 2024, helping them reach the semi-finals of the competition.

One of the star players at the Euros was Dani Olmo, who shone brightly for eventual winners Spain, and he is also seen as a target for Liverpool. The RB Leipzig attacking midfielder is wanted by Manchester City, Bayern Munich and Barcelona, too, however, so it won't be easy for Liverpool to get their man.

£45m Liverpool player could now quit Anfield

According to a new update from Football Insider, Joe Gomez could now quit Liverpool this summer after learning he was part of a possible swap offer involving Newcastle United winger Gordon.

The report says that the 27-year-old is "considering" his future at Anfield, with an earlier claim suggesting that the Reds value Gomez at £45m and held discussions to hand Newcastle the defender and a fee with Gordon heading in the opposite direction.

The Merseysiders would reportedly "be willing to sell Gomez at the right price heading into the next four weeks", with Liverpool's longest-serving player potentially waving his goodbyes after nine years at the club.

Liverpool defender Joe Gomez

Losing Gomez would be a real shame, considering what an excellent utility player he has become, being capable of thriving all the way across the back-line. He now has 224 Liverpool appearances in total – it would be far more were it not for injury woes – and he has won eight trophies during this time there.

The England international is arguably now into his peak years, however, and he may feel that he needs to be a regular starter somewhere, which Slot may not be able to promise him.

With Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate potentially the strongest pairing at Liverpool currently, and Jarell Quansah improving all the time, it is hard to see how Gomez's situation is going to change, meaning the Reds could be wise to cash in on him.

Liverpool in the race to sign £60m "monster" who could be better than Gordon

FSG must seriously consider advancing their interest in this Premier League star.

ByAngus Sinclair Aug 2, 2024

Having Gomez around arguably remains the preferable option, given his aforementioned versatility, but if he wants to leave, Slot shouldn't stand in his way, potentially getting as much as £45m for his signature in the process.
