PCA stall on ECB's request for players' 20% pay cut

A letter from Tom Harrison encouraged the PCA to support a 20% wage cut for players

George Dobell01-Apr-2020England’s centrally contracted players appear – at this stage – to have declined the offer to accept a temporary pay cut as part of the sport’s efforts to combat the challenges set by the COVID-19 pandemic.Tom Harrison, the ECB chief executive, wrote to Tony Irish, his counterpart at the Professional Cricketers’ Association (the PCA; the players’ union who negotiate pay on behalf of centrally contracted players), on March 29 to broach the subject. ESPNcricinfo has a copy of this letter. In the letter, Harrison revealed that he personally would be taking a 25% pay cut “for at least three months” as the ECB “confronted… the biggest challenge the sport has known in the modern era.” It is understood that other ECB executives have volunteered a 20% pay cut and some staff will be informed on Wednesday morning of a decision to furlough them.It is unclear how much direct input the players had on the decision, although writing on Twitter, Ben Stokes responded with fury at the suggestion that England’s centrally contracted players had personally turned down the request. While there were some exchanges between the PCA and the players on WhatsApp groups, the PCA stance has remained that pay cuts should only be seen as a last resort. Jos Buttler, meanwhile, is auctioning off the shirt he wore when England clinched the World Cup to raise money for a health service charity.ALSO READ: Losing whole summer would cost over £300m – ECB chief executiveWhile the ECB understood they could not compel the players to accept a pay cut, they had hoped they might volunteer one as a “gesture” in an unprecedented crisis. But, after receiving a less than enthusiastic response to the idea, in a media conference on March 31, Harrison said the ECB “are not seeking pay cuts from England players”.”In these circumstances,” Harrison wrote, “it is my strong belief that a leadership example must be set.”These measures will be far more effective with the support of our professional players and we seek your help and understanding in this. We are rightly proud of the role our England players play in wider society and how they are helping people through these difficult days and across the country we recognise the valuable role that professional cricketers play in support of the cricket family. In unprecedented times like these, it is important for the whole cricket family to show a willingness to be part of the solution.ECB chief executive Tom Harrison sent a letter to PCA CEO Tony Irish last week•Getty Images

“Whilst the health of the nation is under threat, the future of our sport depends on every single one of us sharing the load right now. In light of this, I am encouraging the PCA and all professional players to support the recommendations the first-class counties present to you next week, which may very well propose a 20% reduction in salaries for April and May, with a view to revisiting this on a monthly basis until we have navigated through the crisis.”I am hopeful that our players are able to contribute in rising to this unprecedented challenge. If we can all pull our weight in working together and come through this, then we will not only reinforce the truly inspiring spirit of the cricket family, but we will safeguard the future of our sport and the livelihoods of everyone who works within it.”An excerpt from Tom Harrison’s letter to Tony Irish•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

ESPNcricinfo understands that the PCA is yet to receive a proposal from the first-class counties, and will wait for that to arrive before considering it. Irish’s most recent public comments stressed the need for collective solutions. Many county players have now beenfurloughed. While some counties are making-up the full difference between the government contribution and their full salaries, some arenot. There is an additional element of negotiation for centrally contracted players due to the Team England Player Partnership (TEPP), which effectively decides the value of central contracts for international players. Irish is also chair of TEPP.It remains possible that the PCA stance will change but it does seem they have not taken the first opportunity to act in this unprecedented situation.

Everton star who’s now worth less than Tarkowski is running out of time

While Everton have suffered a turbulent few months with off-the-field issues resulting in an eight-point deduction, manager Sean Dyche has impressed this season with the Toffees' securing their Premier League status for next term.

The Merseyside club have turned their form around in recent weeks, with their four-game unbeaten run enough to pull themselves clear of any looming danger despite the troubles with PSR.

The financial problems behind the scenes at Goodison Park have been well documented and have prevented Dyche from investing heavily in his squad, restricting him to working with players who were at the club before his appointment.

Everton manager Sean Dyche.

Injuries and various other reasons have seen the Toffees' boss rely on some younger players to do the business this season, with Jarrad Branthwaite the main beneficiary – starting 33 times in the Premier League this campaign.

However, the manager has been let down by some of his first-team squad this season, with one player, in particular, struggling with his fitness and yet to showcase his best at Goodison Park.

Nathan Patterson's stats at Everton

After joining the club in January 2022 under boss Rafa Benitez, full-back Nathan Patterson had high hopes of being the club's long-term Seamus Coleman replacement.

He joined from Rangers for a fee in the region of £16m, a figure that was then the highest figure ever received for a player from Ibrox, with the youngster signing a five-and-a-half-year deal at Goodison Park.

However, over two years on from his arrival on Merseyside, he's only made 48 appearances for the club, with only 20 coming during the 2023/24 campaign.

Patterson has only started 25% of matches under Dyche this season, missing the last four Premier League outings with a fresh hamstring issue.

At just 22, the Scotsman could still prove to be a success at Goodison, but for the time being he's failed to prove his worth, with his market value taking a nose dive as a result of his lack of game time.

Nathan Patterson's market value in 2024

After just two appearances in 2024, the Scotsman's value has decreased to just £6m, as per Football Transfers – a drop of £10m from the fee that the club paid for him in January 2022.

His subsequent value is now less than defender James Tarkowski, who joined the club on a free transfer from Burnley just six months prior to Patterson's arrival at the club.

The centre-back is now worth £17.8m, a huge jump from his transfer that cost the club nothing – another example of the excellent dealings conducted by the Toffees in recent seasons.

Patterson undoubtedly still has the potential to be a hit at the club, but for now, he's got to bide his time with Ben Godfrey currently looking undroppable after his recent stint covering at right-back.

However, he has the opportunity during pre-season to stake his claim for a starting spot, with the defender needing to grasp the next opportunity that comes his way if he's to become a regular under Dyche next season.

Having spent over two years now on Merseyside, time is perhaps running out for the former Gers man to make an impact…

Emmanuel Petit urges Arsenal to sign "explosive" Man Utd star

Two 90 minutes separate Arsenal from lifting a historic Premier League title, their first in 20 years, their first since Arsene Wenger, their first since the Invincibles no less.

That first 90 minutes doesn't even involve them. It does, however, involve their fierce rivals Tottenham who face off against Manchester City.

Imagine having to rely on Spurs to win the title? It's funny how football works isn't it? Alas, supporters can be proud of Mikel Arteta's men this term.

They have done their bit and should they beat Everton on the final day, will conclude the campaign with 89 points. It's a remarkable tally and one that would have been enough to win seven of Sir Alex Ferguson's titles at Manchester United.

It's been a phenomenal term for Arsenal whose 27 Premier League wins are the most they've recorded in a single campaign. As Arteta put it on Sunday, that is an "historic" achievement.

His recruitment last summer was nothing short of perfect. We all know how good Declan Rice has been, how astute an acquisition Golden Glove winner David Raya has been, how miraculous a turnaround Kai Havertz has enjoyed.

So, does anyone fancy round 2? This summer is set to be another exciting one for the Gunners who are reportedly chasing the likes of Alexander Isak and Amadou Onana.

However, does another interesting signing lie in wait, potentially taking inspiration from the Havertz move of last summer? Former Arsenal man Emmanuel Petit hopes so.

Petit urges Arsenal to sign Man United outcast

Speaking on behalf of Grosvenor Sport, Petit spoke about the exploits of Jadon Sancho in recent months.

Sancho was exiled from the United squad after an alleged bust-up with Erik ten Hag. The end result? The Red Devils tail off and Sancho reaches the Champions League final with Borussia Dortmund.

Jadon Sancho

We'll say it again, it's how funny how football works out. It's unlikely the English winger will play for United again and as a result, Petit has suggested Arsenal have a look in the summer window.

He said: "I was saying how impressed I was with Jadon Sancho in the Champions League on commentary – he looks like a new player, so fit, thin and explosive. He’s like dynamite on the pitch, so explosive on the ball with Adeyemi on the left flank – so hard to catch.

"He’s back to his best and Man United look so far away from them, so if Arsenal want him, why not? You can put the best player in the world at Man United at the moment and they’d look average in two months."

Jadon Sancho for Borussia Dortmund

As Petit says, why not? A year ago you'd have said no chance. After all, the 24-year-old has scored just 12 goals and registered eight assists in the red of United.

Yet, at Dortmund, he looks a different player. Sancho may have only scored three goals and provided two assists across 22 matches but he has been a revelation in Europe.

As Dortmund defeated PSG in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final, the Man City youth product turned in one of the finest displays we've seen in the competition's history.

Sancho walked off the pitch at the final whistle having completed 12 successful dribbles, the most by a player in a Champions League match during 2023/24.

So, he's evidently still a very exciting player. Arteta has already shown he can revive the fortunes of those floundering at bigger clubs, notably Havertz. Does he fancy a run at Sancho too? Only time will tell.

Man Utd could help Sancho explode by hiring "crazy" Ten Hag replacement

Kemar Roach strives and sweats, but remains wicketless

Quick has gone 11 months without a Test wicket, but is fulfilling his role admirably

Nagraj Gollapudi16-Jul-2020August 31, 2019. Kemar Roach will remember that day, the last time he took a Test wicket. And what a wicket it was: he forced a nick off the outside edge of India captain Virat Kohli in Jamaica. In fact, Roach nearly took a hat-trick.Nearly 11 months and 77.2 overs later, Kohli remains the last Test wicket Roach has taken. The Barbadian will be hurting no doubt considering he arrived in England, seven scalps short of becoming the ninth West Indies fast bowler to take 200 Test wickets.Dry spells are nothing new to Roach, who turned 32 weeks after landing in England. Roach had gone 328 balls without a wicket from 2015 to his first wicket on his comeback in 2017 against England at Edgbaston on the 2017 tour. That had followed another long barren spell mid-2015 during England’s tour of West Indies when Roach went without a wicket for 300-plus deliveries.ALSO READ: ‘I’m bowling better now than when I was hitting 145-150kph’How must Roach feel now? The Test series is six days old. Jason Holder and Shannon Gabriel inspired West Indies in the Southampton victory while Roach’s fourth column remains vacant. A man used to making swift and big dents in the opposition has remained a bystander. It must hurt. But part of Roach’s maturity has been his understanding of what he can and cannot do. So far this series Roach has delivered 61 overs, including 20 today, which were spread across five-and-a-bit spells. He might not have got a wicket, but that does not mean Roach has not created pressure. In fact, as the series has progressed Roach’s control has become better. Unlike in Southampton, where the conditions were drier over the last three days, Roach found enough lateral movement throughout the overcast and cloudy day at Emirates Old Trafford. Maintaining the channel and pitching mostly on length, Roach has kept England’s batsmen on a tight leash, allowing no freedom to score.ALSO READ: WI quicks surge through discipline and pace – but also ChaseThe England top order was on its guard today as Roach moved the ball both ways while attacking the stumps and keeping the length fuller. Dom Sibley was lucky early on as he went chasing a full delivery in Roach’s fourth over, but the outside edge fell just short of Holder at second slip. Next ball Roach, leaping from his customary wide-of-the-crease angle, seamed the ball into Joe Root’s front pad.Roach went up with both hands in appeal. But he wasn’t sure exactly about the impact and modestly admitted that to his captain, Holder, who was more excited and told Roach with three reviews, there was no harm to take a chance. Michael Gough, the on-field umpire was proved right, as the impact was well outside off.Roach returned to his bowling mark with that big, wide smile intact, and carried on manfully doing his job.Roach after narrowly missing out on a hat-trick against India last year•Associated Press

Sibley and Stokes might have been disciplined throughout the day, but both would admit there were no freebies on offer especially from Roach. Sibley faced 67 deliveries of which 55 were dot balls (82.1%). Stokes faced 29 deliveries and all were dot balls, as Roach, recognised by none lesser than Andy Roberts as the best bowler currently against left-hand batsmen, bowled a probing spell in the channel.Late in the afternoon, in the middle of his final spell of the day, Roach squared up Sibley once again, but seamed the ball into the right-hander’s front leg. Roach this time was not shy to ask for Holder to review. Gough had ruled it as not out. It was another wasted review as Hawk-Eye predicted the ball would hit the top of the stumps. Umpire’s call denied Roach his first wicket of the series. The next delivery was a no-ball. Roach was exhausted. His muscles were sore after barely getting three days to rest between the two Tests. Roach was desperate. In his last over of the day, his 20th, Roach nearly got an outside edge off Stokes’ bat as the England vice-captain nearly played at an outswinger. Stokes nodded in appreciation. Roach smiled and turned back for the next delivery.Fast bowling can be exhilarating many times. But there are also many occasions, like today, when even the best of best, and you can put Roach in that bracket based on his success since 2017, are made to grind. Before the series, Roach told ESPNcricinfo that the one man he would want to sit down and talk cricket one day is Jimmy Anderson. The beauty of Anderson’s art, his experience and the way he can set up a batsman are reasons Roach wants to talk with the Englishman. What would Anderson do if he were in Roach’s shoes now? While he might not possess the prized wrist of Anderson, Roach can do what the England great has done seemingly forever: continue pitching nagging lengths and lines, suffocate the batsmen, then set them up, leaving them high and dry.Roach knows the gig. Strive and sweat he will. The dry spell will end one day.

Ornstein: Man City battling rivals to sign “unbelievable” £60k-a-week ace

Manchester City are battling one of their Premier League rivals for the signing of an "unbelievable" player this summer, according to reliable journalist David Ornstein.

Man City transfer news

Pep Guardiola's side are on the verge of a fourth straight league title – a sixth in seven years – with victory at home to West Ham on Sunday enough to get them over the line ahead of Arsenal.

Regardless of whether title glory is achieved, City will again be on the lookout for top-quality signings as they aim to continue their dominance and get their hands on the Champions League once again.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola.

In fact, Guardiola could come up against one of his future players this weekend, with West Ham midfielder Lucas Paqueta continually linked with a move to the Etihad. A switch failed to come to fruition last summer, but he is expected to leave the Hammers this time around.

Bayer Leverkusen have romped to Bundesliga glory under Xabi Alonso, with right wing-back Jeremie Frimpong one of their standout performers. The 23-year-old is another player reportedly wanted by City as they look for a long-term replacement for Kyle Walker.

Man City want "unbelievable" star

Speaking in a Q&A for The Athletic, Ornstein claimed that Manchester City are rivalling Liverpool for the signing of Anthony Gordon this summer. However, the Newcastle United ace is expected to remain at St James' Park:

"Liverpool (as with Manchester City and many other clubs) really like Gordon. But they are not expected to pursue the winger because Newcastle have no intention of letting him go.

"Even if that stance became changeable, the potential level of fee it would take to do business would be astronomical. I’m certain Gordon is staying at Newcastle this summer."

Gordon's stock has risen greatly this season following an impressive first year in a Newcastle shirt – one that has seen him score 11 goals and register 10 assists in the Premier League, highlighting his end product.

The £60,000-a-week attacker should not only be a shoo-in to make England's Euro 2024 squad, but also be a strong contender to start for them at the tournament, especially as both Jack Grealish and Marcus Rashford have had underwhelming campaigns in their left-sided roles.

Gordon has certainly left an impression on Bruno Guimaraes since joining the Magpies from Everton, with the Brazilian saying earlier this season: "He has been unbelievable, always scoring and giving some assists. He is a lovely guy as well, I am very happy for him and hope he can get some minutes for England. For me to play against him will be massive for both of us and the club as well."

Sadly for City, it looks as though Newcastle will hold firm when it comes to keeping Gordon, but he could have been viewed as a younger upgrade on Grealish, who turns 29 later this year, while also providing competition for Jeremy Doku on the left side.

£50 million Chelsea ace now eyeing Saudi move amid Enzo Maresca’s arrival

A £50 million Chelsea player is said to be eyeing a move to Saudi Arabia amid Enzo Maresca's arrival at the club, with the Italian's appointment confirmed on Monday.

Maresca announced as new Chelsea head coach this week

A new era at Stamford Bridge has officially begun, as Maresca puts pen to paper on a five-year deal with the option of a further 12 months.

ByEmilio Galantini Jun 4, 2024

Pretty much immediately after securing Premier League promotion with Leicester City, and winning the Championship title last season, Maresca has made the switch to west London as he makes plans behind the scenes.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Maresca cannot wait to work with Chelsea keeper Robert Sanchez as one squad member he really rates. There have been other reports that Maresca plans to make Cole Palmer the focal point of his Chelsea side as well, and the ex-Parma boss is also very much looking forward to working with Chelsea's younger crop of players.

“Maresca believes in the Chelsea project around young players with a big future, he thinks it is a really exciting project," said reliable journalist Romano to CaughtOffside on why Maresca joined Chelsea.

"Meanwhile, Chelsea are convinced he’s a super talented coach and that’s why he’s a name appreciated by both directors and owners, all convinced he can be the man for present and future. Maresca’s obsession with ball possession, quality football, dominating the game, his knowledge of elite football despite being a young manager – all of this made the difference for Chelsea to pick him.”

While certain squad members are set to hugely benefit after Maresca's switch to Stamford Bridge, the same cannot be said for some players. Chelsea are set to try and sell Romelu Lukaku for around £38 million, while Sky Sports journalist Dharmesh Sheth writes that Borussia Dortmund are in talks to sign Ian Maatsen on a permanent deal.

Another player who could be sold under Maresca is striker Armando Broja, who was valued at around £50 million earlier this year.

After a poor loan spell at Fulham, clubs could be unlikely to pay a figure close to that amount, with journalist Ben Jacobs sharing an update on his future for GiveMeSport.

Broja open to leaving Chelsea for Saudi side

He writes that Broja is open to leaving Chelsea for Saudi Arabia this summer, but clubs in the Middle East are only likely to pay up to £20 million for him – under half of what Chelsea valued him a few months ago.

The Albania international's sale would count as pure profit in the eyes of PSR, considering he came through the Cobham academy, and it's perhaps more important to just get him off the books to raise funds.

Broja did enjoy a fantastic loan spell at Southampton a couple of seasons ago, with Saints legend Francis Benali calling him a "sensational" player.
