Development: Chelsea make first move to sign Callum Wilson before deadline

Chelsea have made their move to sign Newcastle United's Callum Wilson before Thursday’s deadline, according to journalist Simon Phillips.

Chelsea striker rumours

The Blues appear to be on the search for a new addition in the final third before the window slams shut, especially as there seems to be a possibility of Armando Broja leaving Stamford Bridge. Recent reports have claimed that Chelsea could sell the Albanian for around £35m, with the likes of Crystal Palace, Fulham, West Ham and Wolves all expressing an interest.

£250,000-a-week striker has “chosen” to join Chelsea

This will come as a big boost for Mauricio Pochettino.

ByCharlie Smith Jan 29, 2024

Should the 22-year-old leave, Mauricio Pochettino would be left with just Nicolas Jackson as his only senior centre-forward option. The Senegal international is away at the Africa Cup of Nations, just like Napoli star Victor Osimhen of Nigeria, who is reportedly on course to join Chelsea later this year.

Therefore, a short-term solution for the remainder of the campaign could be on the cards, with the likes of Karim Benzema mooted as a possible option. Meanwhile, AZ Alkmaar’s Vangelis Pavlidis, Zenit St Petersburg’s Mateo Cassierra, Cercle Brugge’s Kevin Denkey and Atletico Mineiro’s Paulinho have all been offered to Chelsea. Wilson is another to have been offered to the Blues, and a new development has now emerged.

Chelsea make Wilson approach

According to Phillips, relayed by The Chelsea Chronicle, the Blues have made a late enquiry to Newcastle over a loan deal for Wilson. However, the Magpies would only reportedly be willing to listen if a transfer was a permanent offer.

It has been claimed that Newcastle value Wilson at around £18m, with Arsenal and Manchester United also on alert alongside Chelsea.

The England international has now made more than 100 appearances for Newcastle after joining from Bournemouth in 2020. The 31-year-old has scored 46 times and registered 11 assists for the Magpies, but this isn’t the first time he’s been on the radar at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea actually wanted to sign Wilson from Bournemouth back in 2018, with assistant manager at the time, Gianfranco Zola, saying:

"I'm sure that there are a lot of players, they are linked with us. Certainly Callum Wilson is doing very well for this club and he's an interest not only for us but for many.

"He's strong, fast and he sees the goal. I like him because he's quick but also strong in the air, which is also a very important quality.”

Phillips has also said in recent days that Wilson is open to a Chelsea transfer, so this could be one that goes down to the wire, with time ticking until the deadline.

Three questions Australia still need to answer

Australia’s warm-up in England brought three victories, but now Justin Langer has to finally nail down his starting XI for the opening game of the World Cup

Andrew McGlashan28-May-2019Khawaja v MarshBarring injury, Usman Khawaja and Shaun Marsh cannot fit in the same XI now that David Warner and Steven Smith are back, so one will be carrying the drinks. Each have strong cases to make the cut, although if the most recent success carries weight then that favours Khawaja, who has scored 769 runs in 13 ODIs this year (more than any other player). He was shuffled around in the warm-up matches – batting in an unaccustomed No. 5 against West Indies then opening against Sri Lanka and making 89 – and has shaken off two injury scares (a blow on the head and the knee) during the preparation. The other debate with Khawaja, if he plays, is where he bats – either opening where he has forged a strong alliance with Aaron Finch or at No. 3 to allow Warner to return at the top. Marsh, meanwhile, could rightly feel hard-done by if he misses out having carried Australia’s batting during their one-day struggles with four centuries in eight innings against England, South Africa and India. One spinner or twoThe warm-up matches allowed teams to use more than eleven players so there was a chance for Adam Zampa and Nathan Lyon to get a good amount of work. During the camp in Brisbane, Finch said that Zampa was the No. 1 spinner given he provides an attacking option, but the ball has also been coming out nicely for Lyon since arriving in England. However, it’s tough for Australia to balance their side with three frontline quicks and play both frontline spinners – the only way would be to leave out a batsman, play Alex Carey at No. 6 and a collection of bowling allrounders. Glenn Maxwell’s bowling is shaping as an important part of the gameplan – good for a full quota if things go well – and he has previously spoken about the value of his stint with Lancashire earlier in the season. It was also interesting to see Smith given a twirl against West Indies and Sri Lanka, clearly Finch is trying to have as many options as he can. And could the captain be one himself? Remember that ODI against Pakistan in March when he took 1 for 41 off his 10 overs?Who supports Starc and Cummins? The big two are locked in, but in the absence of Josh Hazlewood and Jhye Richardson there remains a jostling for who the third quick will be between Nathan Coulter-Nile, Kane Richardson and Jason Behrendorff. They all bring something a little different; Coulter-Nile offers more batting, Richardson is known for his skills at the death and Behrendorff can be a threat if the new ball moves. Richardson was given both official warm-up matches although he was expensive against the Sri Lankans, Coulter-Nile took a pasting from Jos Buttler before claiming his wicket and Behrendorff collected 2 for 43 in his outing against England. It is likely that all will be needed at some stage of the tournament but it remains tricky to say who is the frontrunner.

From cruising to making waves, how England opener Amy Jones turned potential into performance

‘I always had people telling me how much potential I had … when you get told that from such a young age you just expect it to happen’

Amy Jones was cruising. In and about the England team, playing the odd game, carrying drinks mostly, but she was just happy to be there. Then, before the 2017 Women’s World Cup, she was dropped. The realisation that potential was only going to take her so far was pivotal in moulding Jones into the in-form opener who is now poised to take her country into an Ashes series against Australia, starting with the first of three ODIs on Tuesday in Leicester.”Getting dropped for that World Cup was huge for me because I kind of expected to be a part of it so when I wasn’t it was a bit of a shock and a bit of a wake-up call,” Jones said.”I was 24, 25 and as a youngster, I always had people telling me how much potential I had and I think when you get told that from such a young age you just kind of expect it to happen. You’re like, ‘oh well, surely I’m going to get a game and I’m going to score runs and it’s just going to snowball from there.'”But it just didn’t really at that point and missing out on the World Cup at home it was really gutting.”Interestingly, it was via Australia that that realisation came. During a successful stint with Perth-based WNCL side Western Fury, Jones “just worked it out for myself” with the help of her coaches there and a fresh environment. She has since returned to Western Australia to play for Perth Scorchers in the 2018-19 WBBL season. The stop-start nature of Jones’ early career was not all down to her. Being a wicketkeeper she had to play second fiddle to the brilliant Sarah Taylor. But when Taylor took time off in early 2018 to deal with anxiety issues that had sidelined her two years earlier, Jones broke back into the England side. Touring India, Jones took the gloves but also had the chance to showcase her batting at No. 3 in a three-match ODI series.”In the first two I got ducks so going into the last one I was like ‘oh Christ,'” Jones said. “This was my first opportunity back and I’d got two ducks so it was a very scary moment and I had a lot of doubts at that point. But I’d say it was that third ODI that was the big turning point for me.”I got 94 and that’s my highest score and I think that’s just the moment when I knew. That was the moment when I realised I could do it and that it wasn’t just potential. I actually had the ability to go out and score big runs, and under a lot of pressure at that point as well.”ALSO READ: ‘You are good enough’ – simple words that saved Tammy Beaumont’s careerPromoted to opener for the subsequent home series against South Africa and New Zealand, Jones has held her place as a batsman ever since while Taylor has also made a comeback as first-choice keeper. In that time, Jones has formed a formidable opening partnership with Tammy Beaumont.”As a youngster I always opened and it was more in the past almost trying to reinvent myself in different positions to try and get a game because that spot was never really open,” Jones said. “Having been able to nail that down now is where I’m comfortable batting so it’s brilliant that I can just go out and do what’s natural to me and that I’ve taken the opportunity really.”Jones is the more “chilled” character yet she is the more expressive batsman. She likes to score runs quickly and is not afraid to go for the boundary early. Bubbly fellow right-hander Beaumont oozes class and is generally prepared to dig in for the long haul.England opening pair Amy Jones (L) and Tammy Beaumont (R)•Getty Images

“I love batting with Tam, she’s good fun and we’ve had quite a lot of success recently together with some good opening partnerships and I think we complement each other pretty well,” Jones said.Beaumont agreed: “She’s good to bat with because she always scores quickly so it takes the pressure off me and it’s exciting to play with someone who complements my game. We hit the ball in different areas, she’s a lot taller than me and we hopefully make it quite difficult for the opening bowlers to bowl at us as a partnership.”Beaumont posted scores of 32, 61 and 46 in the recent one-day series with West Indies, while Jones twice threatened to overhaul her career best with 91, 18 and 80. Jones seems to be withstanding the inevitable pressure to convert 80s and 90s to a maiden century but she admitted to do it in an Ashes series “would be incredible”.

Surprise name emerges in "crazy" twist to West Brom ownership saga

Despite sitting firmly within the playoff places, West Bromwich Albion's on-pitch success this season has been marred by uncertainty in the boardroom with a dragged-out search for a new owner taking a new twist this week.

The ownership problems at West Brom

Since purchasing a stake in the club from Jeremy Peace in 2016, Guochuan Lai has overseen a managed decline of the West Midlands outfit, going from a comfortable Premier League side to the brink of financial failure.

Problems first emerged when it became apparent that Lai could not afford the £190million price agreed with Peace, sounding alarm bells just six months into the ownership. It later transpired that Lai wanted to take out loans to fund his other business interests, secured against the club's assets. These loans left West Brom in a dangerous financial position and Baggies' fans rightfully angry.

Some six years after, West Brom were relegated to the Championship, they sit in fifth place and are looking in good shape to make a return to the top flight. Despite their league position, many West Brom fans are struggling to celebrate whilst their club still sits in ownership limbo.

Tom Fellows celebrates for West Brom.

With takeover rumors circling for the last few years, it is expected that new owners could be in by the end of the season. Whilst Albion fans wait patiently for news, the saga has taken a surprising turn with a new figure entering the fold.

A "crazy" twist as Aston Villa fan enters fray

Speaking on The Liquidator Podcast (via West Brom News) last week, West Brom fan and former BBC broadcaster Adrian Goldberg revealed a surprising turn that could see Aston Villa fan Alex Hearn potentially becoming a part-owner of the club.

Goldberg reveals an unpaid loan of £2 million from Hearn's company, Warmfront, to Lai's West Bromwich Albion Holdings, with an interest rate of five percent a month. With the deadline for the repayment of the loan set for the 8th February, Hearn can convert the loan into shares if Lai cannot make the payment.

"The rate of interest on that loan is five-per-cent a month – an incredible rate. West Brom Holdings own 88 per cent of West Bromwich Albion, and the suggestion was made that if the loan isn’t repaid, Hearn could convert that loan into shares in West Brom Holdings.

“It opens the possibility that West Brom Holdings is part-owned by a Villa fan. It’s just crazy. Keep an eye on that February 8 deadline – things may start moving, because that’s a publicly notified deadline.”

West Bromwich Albion's home stadium, The Hawthorns.

With a full takeover of the club still ongoing, West Brom News reports that US businessman Shilen Patel is leading the race to purchase the club from Lai and take control at The Hawthorns. Whether the involvement of Hearn has ramifications for the Patel deal is yet to be seen, with any prospective owner potentially having to also negotiate with Hearn if he becomes a shareholder at the club.

If a takeover cannot be agreed, it could throw what has been a successful season for The Baggies so far into crisis, continuing the spiral of the decline that started the minute Lai took over at The Hawthorns.

West Brom could have signed £50k-p/w Kipre replacement in January

Quiet Australians at the Ashes? 'Maybe not' feels Joe Root

The England captain feels Tim Paine’s ‘new Australia’ will be tested in the crucible of an Ashes series

England captain Joe Root will believe Australia have ceased to be the mouthy, win-at-all-cost combination he had encountered two years ago only when the behaviour of Tim Paine’s men stands up under the extreme pressure of an Ashes series.Numerous members of England’s squad were left bruised if not outright scarred by their experiences on that tour, bullied by Australia’s pacemen and batsmen and also subjected to plenty of hostile and at times outright abusive language. The subsequent Newlands scandal and its fallout pushed Australia in a fresh direction, ruling out premeditated abuse, but it was evident during their Southampton internal trial match that there would still be plenty of chatter on the field. In the lead up to the first Ashes Test, Root admitted he was yet to be convinced that the new, more respectful Australian approach would stand up when they were in the crucible of an Ashes series in England – where they have not won since 2001.”Not sure, to be perfectly honest. We’ll have to wait, obviously we’ll find out,” he said. “Some of the comments that have crept out over the last couple of weeks makes me suggest that maybe not. But we’ll see. Certainly would be different [if quieter].”I’m sure it’ll come up in the preview to the game with the match referees and stuff. We’ve got a way of playing our cricket and we don’t want to get involved in anything that’s unnecessary, or – we just want to play good cricket. We want it to be entertaining; we want the crowds to enjoy themselves at every ground. But we want it to be done in the right way.”At the World Cup, England, the eventual champions, faced Australia twice. In the group-stage game, Root scored 8 in a 64-run defeat at Lord’s, while in the semi-final at Edgbaston, he hit an unbeaten 46-ball 49 in just over an hour to guide England to an eight-wicket win.”The first game I wasn’t out there long enough to find out. The second game… by that time we were in a very commanding position,” Root said. “So it’s very different – and it was hard to hear anything above the noise at this ground. It was an incredible atmosphere, for the English anyway. Yeah, we’ll see.”The comments that Root referred to included Josh Hazlewood’s suggestion that Jason Roy would struggle as a Test match opener, while the inclusion of the highly talkative Matthew Wade should also mean things are seldom quiet when he is in the field.”I saw a few comments, yeah,” Root said of Hazlewood. “You expect those ahead of a big series. So, anyway, it’s always tasty when people have a bit to say. I think with selection, he [Roy] is there to go and play in his own manner at the top of the order. He’s a very talented player, he can take a game away from a number of sides.”People have opinions he might be better suited to No. 4. I think it’s really exciting having him at the top of the order and he deserves the opportunity to go out there first up and have a good crack at the top, and hopefully apply some pressure back onto Australia.”As for the reception expected for Australia’s players from the Edgbaston crowd, particularly Steven Smith, David Warner and Cameron Bancroft, Root said he was expecting the noise to play a significant part in the series. “I’m certainly not going to be stood there booing, that’s for sure,” Root said. “It must’ve been a really tough time for the three of those guys.”I can’t control how other people are going to react within the ground, and how the crowd go about that. I think the [World Cup] one-dayers gave a small idea of what it probably will be like for them. But we’re not going to get involved in that as a team, we want to play good cricket, and make it a really memorable series. It’s been a great summer for us so far, and it’s an opportunity now, five more Test matches to build on that and hopefully make it a very special year to remember.”
