Nigeria make history after sealing U-19 WC spot

Peter Aho provided the star turn as Nigeria recovered from 91 for 7 to go past the 139-run target with two wickets in hand against Sierra Leone

They were 91 for 7 at one stage in their chase of 139 against Sierra Leone Under-19s, but Peter Aho did the trick for Nigeria Under-19s to give them a two-wicket win and a place at the Under-19 World Cup – or any global cricket tournament – for the first time. The result gave Nigeria an all-win record in the Under-19 World Cup Qualifier Africa Division One competition, played in Windhoek, with hosts Namibia ending second, followed by Uganda, Sierra Leone, Kenya and Tanzania.Namibia took on Kenya in one of the other matches on the day, and won by 198 runs – they scored 194 for 5 and bowled the opponents out for 96 – to boost their net run-rate in a big way, and a loss for Nigeria would have put the home side in the World Cup.That looked like the case when, in response to Sierra Leone’s 138, Nigeria slipped to 33 for 3, and then lost their seventh wicket with just 91 on the board. But Aho, who had earlier returned 2 for 49, did it with the bat too, walking in at No. 8 and scoring an unbeaten 21 from 32 balls to take Nigeria past the target with 34 balls in hand.Peter Aho smashes one to midwicket•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Earlier in the game, after George Ngegba won the toss and opted to bat, Sierra Leone rode on Haroun Kamara’s 58 in 60 balls from No. 5 to stay in the fight. John Bangura chipped in with 21 and Osman Sankoh 24 as they put up what looked like a low total but turned out to be very competitive.Nigeria struggled in response, even though many of their batsmen got good starts.Olayinka Olaleye scored 16 at the top, Isaac Danladi 25, and Miracle Ikaige 22, but with Sankoh leading the show with the ball for Sierra Leone with 3 for 13 from his ten overs, the wickets kept falling. It needed Aho’s nerveless innings, in which he hit three fours, towards the end to complete the job for Nigeria.Sylvester Okpe, the Nigeria captain, admitted to being “a bit scared” when the chase seemed to have gone off track, but told the ICC, “Today wasn’t supposed to be tough, but the openers [Sierra Leone bowlers Sankoh and Ngegba, who got 2 for 24] made it tough and we almost lost our heads but at the end, we came out strong.”

Chelsea eyeing bid to sign Dovbyk in January after update shared on Jackson

As 2023 comes to a close, Chelsea will reflect on arguably their worst year in Premier League history, when taking into account the money that they spent and where it landed them. The Blues splashed the cash in the last 12 months, but it was to no avail. Even after a busy summer transfer window and the addition of former Paris Saint-Germain boss Mauricio Pochettino, they remain stranded in 10th.

Their most recent victory – a 3-2 thriller against Luton Town – at least handed Chelsea some hope ahead of next year, and the potential addition of one particular forward target could lead to things finally turning around at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea transfer news

The London giants attempted to finally put an end to their striker problem in the summer, welcoming both Nicolas Jackson and Christopher Nkunku. Jackson, however, has scored just seven Premier League goals, with three of those coming in one game against Tottenham Hotspur. Meanwhile, Nkunku has only just made his return from injury and needs time before his impact can be judged. With the former heading off for international duty at the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal in January, however, Chelsea may need to turn to the transfer window no matter what, which could see them land a solution for Pochettino.

According to The Sun, Chelsea are lining up a move to sign Girona forward Artem Dovbyk, who could be sold for around £39m. If the Blues manage to make room for the forward through the departure of Armando Broja, then they could land the potential solution to their goalscoring problems, with Pochettino impressed with the striker's 6ft 2 physical profile.

Dovbyk, of course, is part of a Girona side gunning for a shock La Liga title win and has more than played an important role in that title pursuit. With Chelsea reportedly interested, however, it remains to be seen whether he'll stay put. The Blues could be boosted by the fact that Dovbyk's agent is the same as Mykhailo Mudryk's, making any deal potentially easier.

"Sensational" Dovbyk could be an upgrade on Jackson

When compared, Dovbyk's stats stand tall against Jackson's this season, who has struggled to make an impact at times. The Girona star has found the back of the net a total of 12 times and has set up a further six goals in all competitions. Jackson, meanwhile, has scored eight and set up two in all competitions. At 26 years old, the La Liga forward could be in his prime, perhaps making now the perfect time for Chelsea to make their move.

Earning plenty of deserved praise this season, Girona manager Michel had nothing but good things to say after the forward's performance against Barcelona. He said:

"I haven’t seen the statistics, but I saw a dominant Barca, and they had many shots on goal, but Girona was as always, and I like it. Last year we had no chance of winning and lost 0:1. On a tactical level, Xavi wanted to press us, but we managed to overcome the high press. We used the space, Dovbyk and Tsygankov played a sensational game in the first half."

Smith, Warner welcomed back to Australia set-up with 'open arms'

The banned pair briefly spent time with the one-day squad in Dubai where the new team culture was one of the key topics discussed

Steven Smith and David Warner said that it felt like they had never been away from the Australia set-up, after being welcomed back with “open arms” during the first part of their reintegration with a series of meetings in Dubai before heading to the IPL.The pair, whose international bans expire on March 29, spent little more than 24 hours with the one-day squad before heading to India during which time the new culture built by coach Justin Langer in the wake of the ball-tampering scandal was explained to them ahead of their full returns, which are expected to be at the World Cup.ALSO READ: ‘Steven Smith, David Warner still have to prove they are the best players’ – Ricky PontingThough both players, who have undergone elbow surgery in the last two months, were eligible for the final two ODIs of the upcoming series against Pakistan – fitness permitting – it was decided by the CA management that it would be better for them to have an extended stint at the IPL before returning to Australia in early May for a training camp in Brisbane.”It’s been awesome, like we didn’t really leave,” Warner said. “The boys have been really accepting of us coming in with open arms and a lot of big hugs and cuddles. It’s good to see the spirit they are in after a great series win in India.”Smith said, “It’s been great to be back around the group, they’ve been really welcoming again and it’s almost like we never left so everything is on the right track.”The events at Newlands led to a stinging cultural review of Australian cricket on and off the field. Langer and the two captains, Tim Paine in Tests and Aaron Finch in limited-overs cricket, have stressed the importance of the manner in which the team plays, which is something Smith and Warner will need to fully buy into on their return.”Making sure that we are aligned with the team values moving forward, we’ve been out for 12 months there’s obviously been a big change which is great and it’s about accepting that and playing what our role should be in the team moving forward,” Warner said.Smith, who admitted he had turned a blind eye to the unfolding ball-tampering plans in the Cape Town dressing room last year, said it was important to get everyone on the same page ahead of the World Cup and Ashes campaigns in England.Ricky Ponting with Justin Langer in Perth•Getty Images

“It’s just been going through the values that are instilled in the team at the moment, making sure we are on the right path looking forward to what’s coming up – a huge World Cup and an Ashes series, it’s a pretty exciting time ahead for the team so just making sure everyone is heading in the same direction. It’s been very beneficial and really good,” he said.Langer has previously admitted the fallout to the ball-tampering bans left Australian cricket like a “dysfunctional family” and he is now delighted to have the two “brothers” among the set-up.”It’s great to have them back on the team, it’s like two brothers coming back home,” he said. “Brothers leave home for different reasons in families, so nice to have them back in there. They’ve been received really well, we had a good night last night and some great meetings today so it’s been really positive.”They’ve gone through a really tough time, a 12-month suspension is unprecedented really, so they are excited and because they are so excited they have a hunger to play well and make a lot of runs to help the team be successful. When you are a coach with two guys with as many runs and experience as they’ve got coming back into a team that’s playing it’s pretty exciting.”The pending return of the pair will leave Langer and his fellow selectors with some tough decisions to make about how to fit them both into a one-day side that returned to winning ways with an impressive comeback against India.Ricky Ponting, who will be Langer’s assistant at the World Cup, said the pair had to show they were still among the best players during their IPL stints and Langer acknowledged it was an important period for them.”The IPL will be a really important time for both because it gives them the opportunity to play some competitive cricket again, to hit a lot of balls, to get moving again, get the feel of the game,” Langer said. “It will be about getting back into the rhythm of high class cricket and I’m sure they’ll get plenty out of that.”Warner made a hundred in Sydney grade cricket last week on his return but Smith, whose elbow problem was more serious, has so far been restricted to net sessions although was bullish about his progress. “The elbow is tracking really well, been batting for the last two weeks and able to play all shots, got my power back, so tracking really well and just excited to play again,” he said.

Labuschagne to play 2nd XI in bid to find one-day form

The Australia batsman has made 19 runs in his first three one-day innings for Glamorgan

Marnus Labuschagne will be one of three Glamorgan batsmen sent to play a 2nd XI county match to try and find form after a poor start to the Royal London Cup.He has made 3, 15 and 1 in his first three one-day innings for Glamorgan with the team losing their opening three matches of the competition to leave them a tough ask to qualify for the knockouts.Labuschagne will join fellow Queensland batsman Charlie Hemphrey and Kiran Carlson in playing against Somerset on Tuesday ahead of Glamorgan’s next Royal London Cup match against Kent on Thursday.”It’s far better than netting and a great opportunity on a very good wicket,” Glamorgan coach Matthew Maynard told . “It’ll give them [Labuschagne, Hemphrey and Carlson] an opportunity to score runs. You can play as well as anything in the nets, it doesn’t always translate to the middle.”Steve Waugh talked about how his mental resilience was developed by going back and playing grade cricket because he was expected to succeed and if the he failed, the opposition could take the micky for a long time.”The three lads want to play. Four of our top seven batsmen are short of runs, hopefully they’ll get an opportunity to score those runs and give them some confidence ahead of Thursday.”Labuschagne made a promising start to his Glamorgan spell, having signed as cover for Shaun Marsh, with a century on Championship debut against Northamptonshire, but in the one-day game he has enjoyed more success with ball than bat, collecting four wickets in three matches including 3 for 46 against Somerset. He was one of the players left out of the Australia A squads to tour England with the selectors opting for most of those with county deals to continue them while the A-team one-day and four-day matches take place. Chairman of selectors Trevor Hohns said that county form would be considered equally along with how the A side performs.”We have Joe Burns, Cameron Bancroft, Marnus Labuschagne, Matthew Renshaw, Peter Siddle and Daniel Worrall in our sights but they have not been included in the squad and will continue to play through this period with their county teams,” Hohns said. “However, we have made it clear that strong form with their county teams will be taken into account for selection in the Ashes squad or the Australia v Australia A tour match.”Labuschagne is an incumbent member of the Test side having been recalled to face India in Sydney in January then played the two Tests against Sri Lanka, where he scored a maiden half-century in Brisbane, but he will face a challenge to retain his place in the squad for the Ashes with the return of David Warner and Steven Smith.

Rangers looking to beat Bournemouth and Norwich to in-demand defender

Rangers will be well aware of just how important the January transfer window is. The Gers sit second and eight points behind Old Firm rivals Celtic with two games in hand in the Scottish Premiership. Philippe Clement's first transfer window at the club will afford the boss his first chance to shape his squad exactly how he wants it and bring in some players specifically suited to his style.

The former AS Monaco man has already made some changes, welcoming Fabio Silva on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers and allowing Sam Lammers to leave. Now, he could dip back into the market to sign an in-demand defensive reinforcement.

Rangers transfer news

With Clement getting his first chance to make his mark on the current Rangers side that he inherited from Michael Beale, he could shape a title-winning squad once again at Ibrox. He's so far had impressive success with the current squad, losing just once, which came against rivals Celtic. His side still sit behind in the title race, meaning that any reinforcements could quickly make themselves heroes.

Wolves striker Fabio Silva.

According to The Daily Record, Rangers chiefs are battling to sign Max Willoughby ahead of both Norwich City and Bournemouth, as Motherwell face a battle to keep hold of their young defender. The Gers already have a link to the defender, with his Grandad Alex Willoughby playing for Rangers in the late 1960s. Perhaps keen to follow in his footsteps, the Motherwell youngster could jump at the chance to complete a move to Ibrox this month.

As the weeks go by, Willoughby could certainly be one to keep an eye on in the January transfer window, as Rangers chiefs battle to secure his signature.

Willoughby an exciting long-term addition

Yet to make an appearance for Motherwell's first team, Willoughby could be wise to make the switch to Rangers if he gets the chance. The young defender is unlikely to get the chance to impress Clement just yet, but the potential to follow in his Grandad's footsteps could be a difficult one to turn down. If he can be part of a title-winning side this season too, it would certainly be quite the experience and one that he can only build on.

Whether his opportunity to make a first-team impact arrives at Motherwell or not remains to be seen, potentially handing Willoughby a tough decision to make. If he sticks, the chance could come his way this season. Meanwhile, if Rangers do come calling and he completes an ambitious move, the young defender may be forced to wait even longer for his first foray into first-team action.

Those at Rangers will be hoping to land one for the future, whilst keeping an eye on the title race this month. In the best-case scenario, they could end the month with reinforcements aplenty and a place at the top of the tree in the Scottish Premiership which would leave them on course to win Clement's first title at the first attempt.
