Liverpool could sign a "phenomenal" Tsimikas upgrade in £17m-rated PL star

The string-pullers at Liverpool will be delighted with the squad's rectification following last season's dreadful decline, slumping into the Europa League after many years of illustrious success as Champions League juggernauts under Jurgen Klopp's guidance.

Klopp remains, but there were concerns that the fall from grace was enough to place him in contention for the sack, with the German even admitting that another manager might not have received such true-blue support from the powers that be.

Perhaps it was a natural end for a side that had reaped such gleaming rewards for a number of years, and with Fabinho, Jordan Henderson and co now shipped on over the summer, it does feel like Klopp recognised that his engine room was at its end, and must be written off.

Having reshaped the midfield on an industrial scale, Liverpool are flying in the Premier League and perch in second place, also topping their Europa League group after four matches and awaiting the visit of West Ham United in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals.

There is still much work to do, and Klopp's proclivity for energy and enthusiasm calls for certain upgrades across the pitch, with the left side of the defence understood to be targetted for investment.

Liverpool transfer targets – Rayan Ait-Nouri

According to Spanish reports, Liverpool are hot on the trail of Wolverhampton Wanderers defender for defender Rayan Ait-Nouri, who has bloomed into an exciting prospect over the past several months.

Rated at £17m by CIES Football Observatory, Ait-Nouri has been noted for his pace and dribbling skills, and he could be the perfect option to serve as Andy Robertson's understudy and replace the under-fire Kostas Tsimikas.

The Montreuil-born player is considered a key cog in Gary O'Neil's system, however, and prising him away from Molineux at the season's midpoint will certainly not be straightforward.

Last week, French outlet Le 10 Sport confirmed that the two Premier League sides have been in regular contact, but it will indeed take a sizeable offer to convince Wolves to release their hold on the dynamo.

Rayan Ait-Nouri's style of play

Fast and ferocious, Ait-Nouri has been making waves in Wolverhampton this season with his heavy-metal approach, catching the eye for an Old Gold team that is perhaps surpassing expectations after losing Julen Lopetegui before the start of the campaign.

Signed from French club Angers for around £9.5m in 2021, Wolves have been nurturing the 22-year-old to the fore over the past few seasons and he now looks cemented as the starring left-back, impacting play and proving to be effective from both sides of the pitch.

The £10k-per-week whiz started just nine matches in the Premier League last season (with seven of such appearances coming across the opening 11 games of the term), though his chances of sculpting a promising start to the season were marred by a torrid opening game against Leeds United, where he made an error leading to a goal and scored an own goal.

Lopetegui issued an admission that while the ace was talented with the ball at his feet, there were certain areas of his defensive game that needed work, though it was stressed that he holds all the tools to build a tremendous career.

Rayan Ait-Nouri's season in numbers

Since the summer, it's fair to say that Ait-Nouri has held some pensive internal discussions regarding an up-and-down campaign, and having been entrusted with a starring role under O'Neil's management, he is now flourishing.

As per Sofascore, the 5 foot 10 gem has started 11 of Wolves' 12 Premier League matches so far, completing 84% of his passes, averaging 0.4 key passes, 2.5 tackles and 4.4 ball recoveries per game and succeeding with 58% of his attempted duels.

If we compare this with last year, it becomes crystal clear that he has ramped up the gas, having averaged just 0.3 key passes and 1.6 tackles per game.

This is a testament to his unwavering belief in his ability and work-rate in improving upon his past travails, and given that he is making such increments, it may well be the apt moment for Liverpool to swoop, providing Robertson with competition and providing the prospective acquisition with a pathway to the No. 1 spot at Anfield in the future.

Robertson, aged 29, will hope to retain his prominent position for several years to come, but, is currently sidelined with a shoulder injury and is still expected to be out for a further two months.

Tsimikas has been promoted to the first team in the Premier League in the Scotland captain's absence, and while he bagged two assists in the 3-0 victory over Brentford before the ongoing international break, he has not quite grasped his opportunity, instead receiving criticism for his defensive displays.

How Rayan Ait-Nouri compares to Kostas Tsimikas

Tsimikas was cheaply dispossessed for Toulouse's opener in Liverpool's shock Europa League defeat before the November break, which was yet another deflating moment after a terrible display against LASK earlier in the competition, where he was branded "abysmal" by one Liverpool-focused podcaster.

Klopp clearly doesn't trust him, and has even fielded right-footed Joe Gomez in the left-back role on occasion as he looks to settle the defence's equilibrium; were Virgil van Dijk not in such stunning form, there might be more noise surrounding the £75k-per-week player's performances.

He does have his qualities, of course, but he is effectively a simulated version of Robertson, which is indicative of how Klopp wants the role to be utilised in fairness, but by signing Ait-Nouri, a whole new realm of dimension would be opened.

For example, Tsimikas ranks among the top 2% of full-backs across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for assists, the top 10% for shot-creating actions and the top 6% for passes attempted per 90, as per FBref.

As the statistic highlights, Tsimikas may well be the more 'creative' of the pair at the moment, but Ait-Nouri is far most robust and progressive as a whole, with FBref ranking him among the top 3% of full-backs across Europe's top five leagues for successful take-ons and the top 5% for tackles per 90.

It's important to note that while Ait-Nouri has not actually been providing any assists recently, he has been an exceptional presence in O'Neil's side, crucial in driving forward and crowbarring his way through opposition backlines.

The three-cap Algeria international has been hailed for his "phenomenal" skills by The Athletic's Tim Spiers already, and while he is still developing, Klopp will be certain that Ait-Nouri's natural talents can be nurtured and refined under his leadership.

While Tsimikas is a decent backup option on Merseyside, he is definitely not the standard to start in the best team possible, instead called upon for the major moments when all else fails.

Ait-Nouri, however, boasts enough potential to possibly make the position his own in the future, and the Reds must now make their move to secure his signature and seal a big upgrade on their Greek left-back.

Vihari, Nadeem and Markande star in India B's big win

Fifties from Dinesh Karthik and R Ashwin weren’t enough to prevent India A from slipping to a 43-run defeat

ESPNcricinfo staff23-Oct-2018Shahbaz Nadeem celebrates a wicket•AFP

An unbeaten 87 from Hanuma Vihari and three top-order wickets from Shahbaz Nadeem helped India B make a winning start to their Deodhar Trophy campaign, as they defended 261 to beat India A by 43 runs. Nadeem, the left-arm spinner, took the new ball and struck with successive balls in his second over to send back Prithvi Shaw and Karun Nair, both lbw.India A’s top order continued to flounder until R Ashwin joined Dinesh Karthik at 87 for 5. The Tamil Nadu pair added 123 to bring parity back to the contest: at one stage, India A needed 52 from 47 balls with five wickets in hand. But Mayank Markande broke the partnership, having Ashwin stumped for 54 (76b, 5×4), and Nadeem dismissed Karthik in the very next over, having him caught and bowled one short of a hundred. Karthik’s 114-ball innings contained 11 fours and a six.India A’s lower order then collapsed against the legspin of Markande, who finished with figures of 4 for 48. The last five wickets only added eight runs to India A’s total.Ashwin had a good match with the ball too, finishing with figures of 2 for 39 in nine overs as India B, who chose to bat first, limped to 261 for 8 after threatening to post a much bigger total. Forties from Mayank Agarwal and Shreyas Iyer set up Vihari and Manoj Tiwary (52, 58b, 1×4, 2×6) to put on 99 for the fourth wicket. At one stage, India B were 194 for 3 with 12.4 overs remaining. The run-out dismissal of Tiwary, however, sparked a collapse. No one from No. 6 downwards got into double figures even as Vihari tried to keep the scoreboard moving at the other end. Following Tiwary’s dismissal, Vihari scored 39 off 30 balls to finish unbeaten on 87 (95b, 9×4). At the other end, India B’s lower order and extras combined to score only 28 off 45 balls. Even so, India B’s total of 261 for 8 proved more than adequate.

Spurs could find Porro understudy in 17 y/o who’s like Alexander-Arnold

Tottenham Hotspur will be hopeful that the November international break will have calmed the storm after the tremendous opening to the 2023/24 campaign took a big hit following an injury- and suspension-fuelled slump.

Ange Postecoglou had worked wonders in transforming the Lilywhites after arriving in the summer and instilling his vision, and with eight victories and two draws from the opening ten matches of the campaign, it's hard to dispute that his appointment was nothing less than a success.

But a calamitous evening against Chelsea resulted in a maiden Premier League loss for the craggy-faced Australian, whose charisma and candidness have married well with the tactical aptitude that has charged the club's budding resurgence.

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou

But his brazen high line came unstuck after two dismissals against the Blues, with the woes compounded by injuries to Micky van de Ven and James Maddison – the influential summer signings are both sidelined until the new year.

With multiple absences, Postecoglou might be inclined to dip into Tottenham's impressive youth pool, and while the likes of Jamie Donley and Alfie Dorrington are the most salient prospects at present – both on the bench during the defeat against Wolverhampton Wanderers last time out – Leo Black will enter first-team contention before he knows it if he maintains his current level of performance.

Leo Black's youth statistics

The 17-year-old is not as advanced in his development as certain other members of Stuart Lewis' development squad, but he is probably one of the most talented, with a fruitful career lingering ahead.

Classified as a midfielder by Spurs' official player profile, Black has actually been plying his trade down the right channel as a full-back this season, and he has taken his opportunity superlatively, posting three goals and five assists from nine matches in the U18 Premier League.

The Hackney-born ace only played seven times in the league last season and was featured across central midfield and left wing roles, and while his youthful years precluded the possibility of regular inclusion, the dramatic upgrade to an unwavering starting berth since the summer is likely thanks to the positional tweak.

Tottenham secured the wonderkid's signature on a two-year scholarship deal in 2022, and he has since made all the right moves toward reaching a position of promise on the cusp of the senior set-up.

Leo Black could be Pedro Porro's understudy

It will be years before Black cements a spot in Postecoglou's first team; even if he continues to exceed expectations, it's unlikely that he will be granted a senior debut for a year or two.

But that's okay, with Pedro Porro really growing into his skin at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium after initially struggling after his transfer from Sporting Lisbon last January on an initial loan with an obligation to buy for £39m – activated in the summer.

pedro-porro-tottenham-hotspur-transfer-kieran-trippier-newcastle-united

The two-cap Spaniard is fashioning an exciting career on English shores and has been one of Spurs' standout performers this season, having been hailed for his "dangerous" displays this term by stats-led journalist Statman Dave.

The £85k-per-week ace, aged 24, has now started 11 successive matches in the Premier League after being benched for the opener against Brentford.

Porro's all-action approach is evident when examining the even spread of his craft. Like butter on bread, he suffuses the pitch with his quality and must be viewed as the paradigm to follow in Postecoglou's system for hopefuls such as Black, who, it must be said, looks like he'd slot right in.

Spurs expert Jon Wenham is among the attentive observers to have been impressed by Black's rise, speaking effusively of the starlet's rise and development in the primitive stage of his journey.

He said: “Leo Black looks so comfortable coming into that midfield role, he grabbed another fantastic assist during the most recent win against Norwich and when I watch him play, he reminds me of Tariq Lamptey when he was coming through, in terms of his size and diminutive ability on the ball."

This interchangeability, a sort of natural dynamism, will set Black in great stead for an ascent through the ranks, and given that he is a centre-midfielder converted into a wide role, he could even emerge as Tottenham's very own Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Tottenham's own Alexander-Arnold

While Black has a long way to go before reaching the standard that would be demanded at professional level, his innate offensive ability bespeaks a technical prowess that will serve him well over the coming phase of his growth.

It's an attacking instinct that allowed Alexander-Arnold to waltz into Liverpool's first-team under Jurgen Klopp, with his ball-playing talent and creative ingenuity contributing to the knowledge that the Reds were journeying toward silver-laden success.

ryan-kent-trent-alexander-arnold-liverpool-opinion

Indeed, a staple of the Anfield side's rise, the 25-year-old has now plundered 16 goals and 75 assists across just 287 appearances from full-back, even dubbed "world-class" by Barcelona legend Dani Alves.

Of course, Alexander-Arnold wasn't always a full-back; indeed, recently the £180k-per-week star has been at the centre of a tactical alteration that sees him drift into the engine room with his side in possession, influencing play from a kind of hybrid midfield role, something that, by the player's own admission, complements his skills.

Such a positional change is not out of the blue; the England international was converted into a wide role from midfield at 17-years-old.

It just goes to show that sometimes making the leap to uncharted waters can be the making of an aspiring player, especially as they seek a route to prominence, and Black would do well to settle into his right-back role.

Generally, there are fewer full-backs pushing for a place at senior level than central midfielders, and given that Black has clinched eight direct goal contributions from just nine matches in the U18 Premier League, this very first season gaining regular match action, following this pathway would be prudent.

There's a long way to go, but Black is ensconced in a fruitful position within one of England's most exciting youth systems, and there's every chance that the cogs will combine to establish this talented dynamo as a major player in the years to come.

Mental tweaks give Mahmudullah batting edge

The seasoned campaigner trades flamboyance for hard grind and the result is a marked improvement in his batting numbers

Mohammad Isam in Mirpur01-Dec-2018

AFP

Mahmudullah has become Bangladesh clutch-hitter at crunch moments. Since early 2016, he’s also matured into a batsman who can craft tough runs, the 30-40 extra runs, that often make the difference in limited-overs cricket. This approach hasn’t really helped his poor Test form.Until his two centuries in the last three Tests, he had averaged 24.75 in 26 innings and his place was the only one, among other senior batsman, that was under scrutiny. When he failed twice in Sylhet against Zimbabwe last month, it appeared as if the pressure had consumed him.At the time, he wanted to bring “mental adjustments to his batting.” One way of doing that was “being positive.” In Mirpur against Zimbabwe and now in this series, he’s left the ball as well as he’s played them, an aspect that hasn’t been a hallmark of his game yet. Here, Mahmudullah’s discipline lasted for 242 deliveries, his longest innings in international cricket till date. His previous longest innings was the 177-ball he needed to make his maiden Test century against New Zealand in 2010.”I have been thinking from the second Test against Zimbabwe, I decided to take care of my mentality,” Mahmudullah said. “I wanted to remain positive, nothing more than that. I just wanted to score runs. Having said that, I was quite lucky [today] as well. A few decisions went my way and an edge didn’t carry to the slip. I have a lot of areas to improve, I have to keep working hard.”Against Zimbabwe, his unbeaten 101 revived Bangladesh from 25 for 4, eventually paving way towards setting a huge target. Against West Indies, he had to fight through 19 overs along with Shakib on the opening evening. Then on the second day he survived two lbw reviews, a catch that almost carried to Shimron Hetmyer at slip and another that Shai Hope dropped at slip. Then he saw Shakib and Liton Das tear into the West Indies attack. When he moved to the 90s, he saw No. 10 Taijul Islam batting more comfortably. This must have been humbling for someone used to dominating bowling attacks.”The ball wasn’t coming on to the bat. When Shakib and I were batting on the first day, we had to work hard,” he said of his grind. “I think we hit only a couple of boundaries. I wanted to be positive, but take minimum risks. The new ball was easier to bat against, which gave us more scoring options. It starts reducing as the ball gets older. We were looking to utilize the bad balls.”Ahead of the Test, Shakib spoke in details about his desire to see batsmen stick to their natural game. Shakib was indirectly asked about Mahmudullah and Soumya Sarkar, and without taking names, he made it clear that his stroke-players had to stick to what they do best.Mahmudullah, though, sees it differently. He isn’t fretting over not hitting fours and sixes anymore. He doesn’t mind playing dot balls and grinding down bowlers. The big-hitter has added another chapter to his batting, and it can only mean good news for Bangladesh.

Man Utd may extend "world class" talent’s deal just to sell him for cash

Manchester United have an interesting plan in place regarding the future of a "world-class" current player at Old Trafford, according to a fresh transfer update.

Man Utd players set to leave in 2024

The Red Devils continue to have an unpredictable season, with performances and results fluctuating between impressive and woeful, and Wednesday's 3-3 draw away to Galatasaray in the Champions League perhaps summed them up as a team.

It was another poor night at the office for Andre Onana, who twice allowed free-kicks to beat him too easily, and his struggles sum up the lack of impact from United's summer signings. Mason Mount has found it hugely difficult to make an impression, with the Englishman not helped by injuries, while Rasmus Hojlund is yet to score in the Premier League despite his impressive tally in Europe.

The January transfer window will allow Erik ten Hag the opportunity to bring in new signings, but plenty of United players will be out of contract in the near future and we could see somewhat of an overhaul in 2024. The likes of Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Victor Lindelof and Antony Martial all see their deals expire in 2024, while Donny van de Beek is thought to be certain to leave in Janary.

Man Utd make Anthony Martial decision

According to a new report from Football Insider, Manchester United could now trigger Martial's one-year extension but with the intent to then sell him for a fee.

"Man United could now activate Anthony Martial’s one-year contract extension clause and then let him go, sources have told Football Insider. The Red Devils could move to prolong the 27-year-old’s deal in order to protect his value and prevent him leaving for free in 2024."

Ratcliffe may well decide to splash out on a new forward next year, claims the report, and that would involve selling Martial either in January or next summer. This is a decision that would make perfect sense for United, ensuring that they don't simply lose Martial for nothing after splashing out so much on his potential back in 2015.

The Frenchman has always been a big talent at Old Trafford, with former Red Devils striker Robin van Persie even describing him as "world-class" on a talent level, but it feels like the right time to move him on, considering his influence has waned as the years have passed.

Fabrizio Romano adresses Man Utd contact for rapid striker target

He could now be available in January.

ByCharlie Smith Dec 1, 2023

This season, Martial's statistics highlight his lack of playing time, with only three starts coming his way in the Premier League in 2023/24, and while he is still only 27 years of age, he has suffered lots of injuries and arguably isn't the player he once was.

United need to move on from the forward now, bringing in fresh faces who represent the future, so it is now a case of triggering his contract and then receiving as much money for him as possible.
