Indian cricket’s rags to riches broadcast rights story

Star India has strengthened its hold on television and digital rights in cricket by retaining worldwide rights to Indian cricket for INR 6138 crore (USD 944 million) for the period 2018-23. They now hold the two most valuable broadcast rights in cricket, having bought the IPL rights for INR 16,347.5 crore (US$ 2.55 billion) in September 2017 for the period 2018-22.In addition to its Indian presence, Star also has a strong grip internationally, having paid USD 1.9 billion for the broadcast rights for ICC tournaments between 2015-23.Star’s bid was declared the winning bid once its close rival, Sony Pictures Network India, listed INR 6118.59 cr as its final bid in the first ever e-auction in sport, which spanned three days. Star’s bid was an increase of 59% from the previous cycle of Indian cricket rights, which were sold for INR 3851 crore (USD 750 million at the time) for the period 2012-18, also to Star. The average cost per match for the Indian cricket rights sold on Thursday was about INR 60 cr (USD 9.2 million approx), which is higher than the average cost per IPL game for the 2018-22 period – INR 54.5 cr (USD 8.4 million approx).ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Star India gets to telecast 102 men’s international matches over the next five-year period, compared to 96 in the previous six-year cycle from 2012 to 2018. The 102 matches will be split across the home seasons as follows: 18 in 2018-19, 26 in 2019-20, 14 in 2020-21, 23 in 2021-22 and 21 in 2022-23. As per the BCCI, Star listed the following figures as the per match value for each of the five seasons: INR 46 cr, 47 cr, 46.5 cr, 77.4 cr and 78.9 cr respectively. The rights will also include men’s domestic matches as well as the India women’s international matches. There were three categories of rights up for bidding: the Indian television rights and rest of the world digital rights (GTVRD), digital rights for the Indian subcontinent alone (ID), and the global consolidated rights (GCR) for which the winning bid was eventually made. The e-auction, an unprecedented exercise in sport, became a three-horse race after the BCCI pruned the original list of six bidders on Tuesday morning, having conducted feasibility checks on eligibility of the bidders. Star, Sony, and Reliance were the final competitors when the e-auction began at 2pm on Tuesday. On Thursday, bidders had 30 minutes to contest a bid, unlike on Tuesday and Wednesday when they had an hour. There was a 35.81 % difference between the final bids on the first two days: from INR 4442 crores (USD 680 million approx.) on Tuesday evening to INR 6032.50 crore (USD 925 million approx)  by Wednesday evening. On Thursday, the bids rose in smaller increments: INR 6061.05 cr, INR 6085.30 cr, INR 6111.70 cr, INR 6111.70 cr, and finally INR 6138 cr.

Report: West Ham looking to sign "versatile" experienced defender in 2024

West Ham United are now keen on bringing in an experienced defender who was offered to David Moyes earlier this year, according to reports.

What's the latest news involving West Ham United?

As per The Evening Standard, West Ham boss Moyes is set to rest several first-team players for his side's trip to Lincoln City in the third round of the Carabao Cup. James Ward-Prowse, Jarrod Bowen and Lucas Paqueta have not travelled to the East Midlands to take on the English third-tier side while Michail Antonio, Alphonse Areola, Emerson Palmieri and Kurt Zouma will also sit out the clash at the LNER Stadium. Summer signings Mohammed Kudus and Konstantinos Mavropanos are expected to start for the Hammers.

Lincoln City captain Paudie O'Connor doesn't seem too fazed by the prospect of going up against one of the Premier League's big hitters, as he told their official club website: "We’ve got nothing to fear, especially being at home. We’ve gone to places like Bristol City, Sheffield United, and Southampton and given a very good account of ourselves on all three occasions, so there’s no reason why we can’t do the same on Wednesday."

Nevertheless, West Ham will be favourites to progress to the next round of the competition and Moyes will be keen to add some extra silverware to complement their exploits in the Europa Conference League last term.

Reports in Spain, via Sport Witness claim that West Ham midfielder Pablo Fornals was targeted by La Liga side Sevilla in the summer and they could look to 'accelerate' their interest in the 27-year-old following their poor start to the campaign.

Fornals will see his contract at the London Stadium expire in 2024 and Sevilla hope that West Ham will allow him to leave for a cut-price fee to avoid losing him for nothing next summer.

Who could West Ham United sign?

Now, according to TEAMtalk, West Ham are one of a number of clubs keen on Shakhtar Donetsk defender Mykola Matviyenko, who was subject to interest from Brentford and Brighton & Hove Albion in January before signing a new deal at the Ukrainian giants. Matviyenko’s entourage are already exploring potential destinations for the 27-year-old, who is also attracting interest from Sheffield United, Crystal Palace, Everton and Burnley.

The Ukraine international has been on something of a scoring spree this term in the Premier Liga despite being a defender, registering three goals in his opening six appearances in the competition, as per Transfermarkt.

Using his pace and defensive wit, Matviyenko has been able to recover an average of 11.5 balls per patch in the Ukrainian top-flight this term, alongside maintaining a pass accuracy of 89%, demonstrating his ability to orchestrate offensive moves from deep, as per Sofascore.

Labelled "versatile" by journalist Andrew Todos, Matviyenko was actually offered to West Ham, Brentford and Leicester City in January while talks between his agency and Brighton took place, with a fee in the region of €25 million believed to have been Shakhtar Donetsk's asking price, 90min reported.

Given his capability to fill in on either side of the backline, Matviyenko would be a smart signing for West Ham to bolster their ranks in the January transfer window.

O zagueiro é o pilar defensivo do time e titular absoluto, entretanto, na última partida perdeu a cabeça e desfalcará o Verdão contra o Atlético Goianiense no próximo domingo (25).

Tottenham: Ange now tells Spurs to sign country’s "fundamental" defender

Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly been told by their manager, Ange Postecoglou, to sign one country's "fundamental" defender.

Latest Spurs news

On the field, Spurs have gone from strength-to-strength under their new boss; winning five out of their opening seven Premier League games while displaying an exciting brand of attacking football on display. Tottenham continued their impressive streak with a controversial 2-1 win over Liverpool in north London on Saturday, with Joel Matip's own-goal deep into added time gifting the home side all three points. Speaking after the 90 minutes, Postecoglou said the dramatic late win could help to build up the spirit and belief in his group of players.

“It wasn’t an easy game for us, we knew it wouldn’t be, and even in the circumstances, we had some unique challenges," explained the Australian.

"For some of these guys, this will be the first time they’ve faced that type of scenario, and for the most part, we handled it okay. Again, getting that late winner helps build the belief and spirit in the group. The thing about Liverpool, even with 10 men, they are equally as dangerous because the game plan is the same, they play on mistakes, they have world-class players up front who can hurt you. I thought the second half was better because we stayed a bit calmer, maintained our pressure in the wide areas and got our reward.”

The result keeps Postecoglou's in second place and just one point behind last season's treble-winners Man City, having scored just as many goals as Pep Guardiola's blues. It's certainly a promising time to be a Spurs supporter as the arrival of Antonio Conte's replacement seemingly hands them a new lease of life. Off the pitch, chairman Daniel Levy and Chief Football Officer Scott Munn will be slowly preparing for the January transfer window.

Latest Spurs transfer news

You could argue that Postecoglou's squad lacks depth beneath the first team, especially when it comes to central defence. If either summer signing Micky van de Ven or Cristian Romero – the current star pairing – become unavailable, there are few world-class options to cover them.

This has lead to reports that Spurs could go in for a second centre-back signing after van de Ven this winter, with the likes of Bournemouth's Lloyd Kelly and Juventus star Gleison Bremer linked recently. Another to have come out as an option is previous summer target Edmond Tapsoba, with an update coming to light on the Burkina Faso international.

According to a report out of Spain, the 6 foot 4 Bayer Leverkusen star is an "express request" from Postecoglou – who has seemingly asked his club make the signing. It's added that the incorporation of Tapsoba to Spurs would be an "ambitious move" by Levy and co, but Tottenham are "determined" to shore up their defence in the coming months.

Called one of Leverkusen's best defenders under manager Xabi Alonso, the 24-year-old has also been branded "fundamental" for his country at international level by members of the press.

Age no bar: why Dhoni and Fleming backed CSK's "old" squad

Also, the CSK coach explains how shifting their home matches out of Chennai affected team dynamics

ESPNcricinfo staff27-May-20182:32

‘A lot of emotion in the franchise, a lot of desire’ – Fleming

They were trolled as the “dad’s army” after the auction, but Chennai Super Kings managed to convert their perceived weakness into their biggest strength. Shane Watson, 36, was one of their many over-30s stars, and he came good when it mattered most, his unbeaten century delivering their third IPL crown. MS Dhoni, two months shy of 37, felt the key to their campaign lay in managing experienced players like Watson, even if it meant giving them slight leeway on the field.”I think we talk a lot about age, but what’s important is the fitness aspect,” he said. “[Ambati] Rayudu is 33, but he covers good ground. Even if he plays a few games where he’s spent a lot of time on the field, he’s not going to turn up and say ‘I’m stiff’. So fitness matters more than age. What we have seen is that our fitness has improved. Most of the captains want players who move well on the field.”It doesn’t matter who was born in which year, you have to be fit and agile. At the same time, we knew the shortcomings and had to accept areas that we won’t be brilliant in. If I am pushing a Watson to stop a single, there’s a good chance he would burst his hamstring and won’t be available. You don’t want Watson or a [Dwayne] Bravo injured because that will mean shuffling a lot of players to get the right combination or the same strength. So managing them well was the key. But yes, age is just a number.”If having to deal with injury-prone players was one challenge, having their home games shifted from Chennai after just one match to Pune proved to be another challenge. Stephen Fleming, the head coach, termed this an “adversity” that they dealt with with a lot of calm.”I will admit moving from Chennai had quite an impact, given, at the auction table, we were picking a team to play in Chennai conditions,” Fleming said. “We had to scramble through the year to try and find a combination. We made more changes to the team that we usually would, just because we all of a sudden had to become a seam-based side and a little bit [less] spin. And that’s quite a big turnaround when you place your strategy to be a slow team with players who play spin well.”So, I’m really proud of the way we adapted to that. I am proud of the way different individuals stood up at key times.”Fleming, like Dhoni, spoke of Super Kings not worrying about the age factor. While Dhoni said fitness was more important, Fleming put the spotlight on experience. “I am really proud of the way experienced players showed their value,” he said, “in a way that validated our faith in them, none finer than the innings from Watson [in the final].”We just believed experience for us, coming back into the competition [after a two-year ban for the franchise’s role in the 2013 spot-fixing scandal], was going to be a key component. The best people to deal with that was players who have dealt with expectations before. That was the reasoning behind this year’s team. Yeah, we got some criticism for it [after the auction]. But we believed that was our best chance of winning.”It’s a tough competition. It’s the toughest year just because teams have become smarter with who they pick. The auctions are much more competitive and there’s a much better grasp on what franchises want with the player. So this was a tough one. And, again, we valued experience for consistency. Guys who could repeatedly do it and not one-offs because we figured those guys could get on a roll – the Rayudus, the Watsons, the Dhonis and Rainas. They take you deep in the tournament. Good enough to win? Who knows? It [depends] on that day. Today, thankfully, was ours.”

(D) Corinthians 1 x 5 Flamengo – 17ª rodada do Brasileirão

Holder four-for leaves Test evenly poised on 20-wicket day

The day started off with Sri Lanka five wickets down in the second innings. It ended with Sri Lanka five wickets down in the fourth

Shashank Kishore and Sreshth Shah26-Jun-2018AFP

An inspired Jason Holder breathed fire to remove four Sri Lankan wickets late in the day as West Indies kept their hopes of a series win alive on a 20-wicket day in Bridgetown. These are the most wickets to have fallen in a single day of Test cricket in the Caribbean, surpassing the 18 that fell when England last toured here in 2015.Holder’s figures at stumps on the third day read 8-3-21-4 as Sri Lanka stumbled to 81 for 5 chasing 144 for a series-levelling victory in the third Test. The visitors could effectively be six down, with Kusal Perera in hospital for scans following a nasty injury while fielding earlier in the day. Official word on his availability is awaited.West Indies had grabbed a 50-run lead, that could have been much more if not for a shoddy drop down leg by wicketkeeper Shane Dowrich in the day’s first over, with Sri Lanka yet to add to their overnight 99 for 5. On 13 then, Dickwella went on to top-score with 42 in Sri Lanka’s 154 all out. Holder picked up three of the four wickets to fall, finishing with 4 for 19 off 16 overs. The game then galloped forward when Sri Lanka took just 31.2 overs to skittle West Indies for 93, the least overs they’ve taken to bowl out a Test side outside Asia. Kemar Roach’s adventurous 23 not out was the highest in a disastrous batting performance, with each of the top five recording single-digit scores. Suranga Lakmal, the captain, and Lahiru Kumara picked up three wickets apiece, Kumara easily the most impressive of the lot, troubling batsmen with genuine pace married with tremendous accuracy. Then under lights, Holder, Roach and Shannon Gabriel got the ball to hoop around, putting the batsmen through a searching examination. Sri Lanka’s hopes now hinge on Kusal Mendis, unbeaten on 25. He has allrounder Dilruwan Perera and the lower order for company.Danushka Gunathilaka and Mahela Udawatte opened the innings in Kusal’s absence, but were dismissed cheaply to expose a fragile middle order missing Dinesh Chandimal, who is sitting out because of a suspension. Udawatte’s horror international return after a 10-year gap continued when he was beaten for pace by a sharp inswinger from Roach to be lbw – his second duck and third single-digit score in four innings on tour. Gunathilaka, meanwhile, top-edged a pull to a back-pedalling Devendra Bishoo at mid-on off a steep Holder delivery.Dhananjaya de Silva was then put to severe test by an inspired Holder, who eventually had his wicket when the batsman shouldered arms to a ball coming inwards and saw his off stump flattened. So fired up was Holder that West Indies wasted a review to a caught behind appeal off Roshen Silva, but he wouldn’t last long, nicking to second slip in the same over to leave Sri Lanka in trouble at 50 for 4. That could have been 59 for 5 had Shai Hope, keeping in place of an injured Dowrich, held on to a one-handed chance offered by Kusal Mendis off Holder. At the start of West Indies’ innings, the home side’s hopes of building on a big lead suffered early setbacks when they slid to 13 for 3 at the end of the first session where eight wickets fell. Kraigg Brathwaite was snaffled at short leg by a rising Lakmal delivery, while Devon Smith and Hope were beaten on the inside edge by sharp inswingers. Dowrich and Holder briefly resisted to add 27, the highest partnership of West Indies’ second innings, before things unravelled. Eventually, Roach’s cameo took the lead well beyond 100, and gave them a respectable pink-ball target to bowl at.
