Glasgow Rangers have been linked with a managerial move for Yokohama F. Marinos' Kevin Muscat, and a reliable journalist has since revealed the chances of him moving to the Scottish Premiership.
What is Kevin Muscat's CV like?
A former professional defender, Muscat began his coaching career as assistant at Melbourne Victory before being handed the main job himself, then he later went on to become technical director and boss at Sint-Truiden, though left that role following his appointment at Yokohama in July 2021, as per Transfermarkt.
However, the 50-year-old’s contract is set to expire in January 2024 and he is yet to put pen to paper on fresh terms, meaning that as it stands, he’s set to leave unless given the opportunity to extend his stay, and this seems to have alerted chiefs at Ibrox according to some reports.
The Light Blues had allegedly been in contact with their target’s camp to discuss the possibility of him taking over from Michael Beale should the hierarchy decide to part ways with their current coach, with the Aussie Scout claiming:
"Understand that Yokohama FM manager and ex-Socceroo Kevin Muscat is considered by Rangers as a candidate to replace Michael Beale were Beale to leave the club. Contact is believed to have been made with associates of Muscat. Muscat won the J-League with Yokohama FM last season."
Are Rangers appointing Kevin Muscat?
Taking to X, however, The Daily Record's Andy Newport was quick to shut down claims that Rangers were considering a swoop for Muscat with his own updatem confirming that the rumours that have emerged are seemingly fake… at least for now.
"Sources at Rangers say no truth in this whatsoever."
Glasgow Rangers manager Michael Beale.
Rangers dismissing the noise that they are thinking about getting rid of Beale clearly shows that they still have faith in him, but should they for any reason have a change of heart regarding his position in the near future, Muscat could be a perfect candidate to succeed him in the dugout north of the border.
At Yokohama, the manager has taken charge of 98 games, and from that, has recorded 57 victories, 17 draws and 24 defeats, meaning that he’s taken 188 points from a possible 294 whilst averaging 1.92 points per match in a more balanced league than the Premiership, via Transfermarkt.
The Crawley-born talent, whose preferred formation is a 4-3-3 defensive set-up, also has the silverware as proof of his success having secured three trophies since the start of his coaching career, the first being the Australian Champion at Melbourne and more recently being crowned Japanese Champion and Japanese Super Cup winner at the Nissan Stadium.
Therefore, Muscat knowing what it takes to compete and be successful, not to mention that he spent a year at the club during his playing days from 2002-2003, so he's no stranger to what is required to achieve in Glasgow, and with the uncertainty surrounding his contract situation, this could be one to keep a close eye on if a change at the helm were to happen.

Newcastle United's expectations have been transformed following the lucrative PIF takeover in October 2021, with the subsequent appointment of the tactically adept Eddie Howe serving as a watershed moment for a club now poised for success unseen on Tyneside in an age.
The Magpies steered away from relegation danger in the latter half of the 2021/22 Premier League season, comfortably finishing in 11th place after the astute work in the winter transfer market paid dividends.
But what followed eclipsed expectations, with a top-four finish last term opening the door to Champions League football, which now looms just one week away after two decades without playing on Europe's biggest stage.
Newcastle's five biggest signings under Eddie Howe

Alexander Isak from Real Sociedad
£63m
Sandro Tonali from AC Milan
£55m
Anthony Gordon from Everton
£45m
Bruno Guimaraes from Lyon
£40m
Harvey Barnes from Leicester
£39m
Technical director Dan Ashworth deserves so many plaudits for the diligent work conducted in identifying talent to fit the strategy and sealing deals for good prices, not overpaying despite the newfound wealth.
It's a far cry from the litany of failures over the past decade, with Newcastle twice suffering relegation since 2009 and consistently falling flat.
Many sales, such as the transfer of Andy Carroll to Liverpool in 2011 for approximately £35m, left the Magpies masses seething, while certain departees went on to thrive after being prematurely discarded.
One of those is Spanish midfielder Mikel Merino, who is now among LaLiga's finest midfielders after failing to really make his mark on Tyneside.
How much did Newcastle sign Mikel Merino for?
In October 2017, Newcastle signed Merino on a permanent deal from German giants Borussia Dortmund for only £6.5m just months after initially signing the player on loan.
During his time with the Yellow Wall, the now 27-year-old only managed nine competitive appearances before being shipped on, and at Newcastle, it looked like the talented midfielder had the perfect platform to kickstart his career.
As per Sofascore, Merino recorded an average match rating of 6.84 across his sole year in the English top-flight, completing 79% of his passes, averaging 2.3 tackles and 1.4 interceptions per game and succeeding with 70% of his attempted dribbles.
Former Newastle United midfielder Mikel Merino celebrating his solitary goal for the club.
Newcastle manager at the time, Rafa Benitez, praised the player for his "quality" upon the announcement of the signing, but after just 25 appearances for the St. James' Park side, he was sold after his buyout clause was met.
Where is Mikel Merino now?
Returning to his homeland to pen a deal with Real Sociedad in a deal believed to be worth £10m, Merino has since gone from strength to strength, even proclaimed to be "the best player in the league" by his manager Imanol Alguacil in 2021.
This might be a little stretch too far – the likes of Karim Benzema, Luka Modric, Vinicius Jr. and Ousmane Dembele plied their trade in the division that term and all excelled – but it certainly pays homage to the immense impact he has had on the White and Blues since his arrival.
Merino's Key Strengths (via WhoScored)
Aerial duels (Very strong)
Key passes (Strong)
Tackling (Strong)
Blocking (Strong)
Having now chalked up 199 showings for Sociedad, Merino has scored 19 goals and supplied 25 assists, heralded by the likes of journalist Josh Bunting as a player who "oozes confidence".
As per FBref, the 16-cap international ranks among the top 4% of midfielders across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for assists, the top 1% for aerial wins, the top 19% for tackles, the top 11% for touches in the attacking box and the top 30% for progressive passes per 90.
What this signifies is a profound understanding of the game, intelligence and multi-functional prowess that allows him to flourish as a box-crashing creative force and as an assiduous member of the defensive efforts in the centre of the midfield.
Indeed, the £53k-per-week gem has developed into one of the most robust, tenacious and technically proficient midfielders in Europe, so much though that Newcastle's divisional rivals Aston Villa were reported to be willing to meet Merino's €65m (£56m) release clause last season.
This illustrates the calibre of midfielder that the 6 foot 2 ace – who has also attracted the interest of Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool over the last year – holds, and his sale is one that Newcastle will inevitably look back at with a rueful gaze, especially given the role that he could play under the tutelage of Howe.
Would Mikel Merino play under Eddie Howe?
Last season in the Spanish top-flight, Merino scored twice and provided nine assists from 28 starting showings, creating 12 big chances, keeping it consistent with 1.3 key passes per game, making 2.3 tackles per match and also winning 66% of his aerial duels.
Highlighted as a formidable defensive presence capable of breaking down opposing advances and utilising his intelligent reading of the game to escape the constraints of a quintessential 'holding midfielder' to become something far more fluid, and rounded.
Because of this, he would likely thrive in Howe's Toon system, with the former Bournemouth boss' style of play, defensive intensity, compactness and slick transition in build-up play.
Last term, Newcastle finished the league season with the division's joint-best defence, and while the backline was imperious and cohesive, this was down to the collective squad understanding and implementation across the thirds.
Bruno Guimaraes is integral, utilising his prowess as a deeplying playmaker to occupy space in the kernel with the ball at his feet and dictate the flow and direction of the play, ranking among the top 11% of midfielders for progressive passes and the top 15% for shot-creating actions per 90.
One can only imagine the success Merino would have alongside him in the axis, providing apt defensive cover when necessary and also barrelling forward into forward positions to serve as the creative conduit between the Brazilian and the likes of Alexander Isak, Callum Wilson and Miguel Almiron to wreak havoc and bring home the goals.
It's very much a 'what if', and while a return to Tyneside does not look likely to be on the cards, Newcastle supporters would certainly be cheering with Merino in the fold, who was sold for a nominal fee and is now one of the most dynamic, all-embracing midfielders around.

Birmingham Bears have announced the return of explosive New Zealand all-rounder Colin de Grandhomme as the dedicated T20 overseas player for 2018.De Grandhomme, who scored the second fastest Test century by a New Zealander in December off just 71 balls, will be available for all games in next year’s T20 Blast campaign after helping the Bears to the final at Edgbaston in 2017.Ashley Giles, Warwickshire’s sport director, said: “I spoke about Colin being a moneyball player when we announced his signing last year. He was still establishing himself in the international game, but had made plenty of game-changing performances for Auckland. We also recognised that he is an outstanding character who would be a good addition to the dressing room.”He went on to play a huge role on our path to the final last year and we saw him change the outlook of several games very quickly, particularly his innings against Derbyshire Falcons at home, and Northants Steelbacks and Surrey away.”De Grandhomme played in Birmingham Bears’ 16 NatWest T20 Blast games in 2017, scoring 322 runs at a prodigious strike rate of 170.32 and taking five wickets.”We came very close to winning the T20 Blast on Finals Day,” Grandhomme said. “We’ve got a young squad with plenty of firepower, and I believe that we have every chance of going one step further in 2018.”

The Australia spinner did not contest the charge and is believed to have contacted AB de Villiers to apologise for his conduct

Nathan Lyon claimed two wickets in his first over•AFP
Nathan Lyon has been fined 15% of his match fee by the ICC for dropping the ball near AB de Villiers after the South Africa batsman was run out on day four of the Durban Test. After the incident was reviewed by the match referee Jeff Crowe, Lyon was charged with conduct contrary to the spirit of cricket, a level one offence. He was found to have breached Article 2.1.1 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to “conduct that is contrary to the spirit of the game”.In addition, Lyon has had one demerit point added to his disciplinary record, a first offence for the player since the introduction of the revised Code in September 2016. If a player accrues four demerit points within 24 months, he receives a one-Test or two-limited-over game ban.Lyon is believed to have contacted de Villiers overnight to apologise. He had also accepted the charge and no hearing was required. The ICC decided, however, that no action would be taken following a confrontation between David Warner and Quinton de Kock during the tea break on day four.Adam Gilchrist, the former Australian wicketkeeper and captain, said the team would need to reassess how they reacted to such incidents.”As an outside observer, I think you would find that a little bit off-putting at times, a little bit bad taste at times,” Gilchrist told . “And the question may even come over all those eras as a general statement. Australian teams have generally been at the top of the pile, not every minute of those times, but generally they’re a very competitive, world class team, and some would say they don’t need to do that.”Why do you need to present that somewhat ugly look if you’re playing such good cricket? And they’re not good images and it’s hard to know, to comment specificially about this incident overnight, and any other time, unless you’re there and know the ins and outs of what was said and what sparked it and the verbal volleys that would have been thrown around.”Very hard to comment on the detail of it but no denying that some of the parts of the celebration of the run-out of de Villiers and then obviously this incident that I’m sure you’re getting to, of this leaked dressing room footage, it’s not a very good look. I think it needs to be considered how to react in certain scenarios and learn from the scenarios.”Speaking about Warner, Gilchrist said the Australian vice-captain was not projecting the image of a leader. “I think with Davey…there is no one denying his capabilities with the bat in hand. It’s funny…he came into cricket and had his natural aggression mindset both with bat in hand and in the field,” Gilchrist said. “He used to pride himself being the guy that got into the verbal stoushes and was a leader of the aggressive mindset. But he then went the other way and he was very, very outright in saying ‘I’ve put that away, that’s not me any more’.”It was really extreme the opposite way, and now he’s come back again saying ‘old Davey’s back’ and all his team-mates are saying ‘the Reverend’s gone, Bull’s back’. It’s always a worry in any situation when someone is so extreme on one direction or the other. I think Davey’s got to find somewhere in between that. He does pride himself in being a leader of the team, he did that very well in the T20s [against New Zealand and England recently] as captain but what we’ve seen in the last 24 hours probably isn’t the images that you want your captain projecting.”

Manchester United have endured a tough start to the 2023/24 season as they have secured just six points from 15 available in the Premier League.
Erik ten Hag would have been hoping that the club could use the momentum gained from the end of the previous season as confidence that they could perhaps challenge the likes of Manchester City and Arsenal, yet the signs are looking ominous that this may be some way off.
Their form is made to look even worse considering United spent a grand total of €196.7m (£169m) during the summer transfer window on players such as Rasmus Hojlund, Andre Onana and Mason Mount.
Although it takes time to settle into a new club, spending lavish amounts like this should generate results fairly quickly and the trio haven’t really hit the ground running as yet.
Recent years have seen the Old Trafford side spend and spend during in the transfer market, while releasing players who were once signed for massive fees, wasting vast amounts of money in the process.
Manchester United manager Erik Ten Hag.
Think back to the likes of Paul Pogba and Alexis Sanchez across the previous three seasons and a narrative begins to form that the Red Devils have been extremely poor in the market.
One player who they sold actually brought in a profit for United, and he has struggled since leaving the Theatre of Dreams in 2021; Daniel James.
How much did Manchester United sign Daniel James for?
During Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first summer window in 2019, he began to overhaul the squad, spending overinflated fees to lure Harry Maguire (£80m) and Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£50m) to United as he looked to begin a revolution.
Although overspending, these moves looked to be additions that would benefit United for the next few years and the Norwegian boss went and raided Championship side Swansea City for young winger Daniel James in what was one of the more surprising moves of the window.
Upon moving to Manchester for a fee in the region of £22m, he was praised by Solskjaer, who said: "Daniel is an exciting young winger with lots of skills, vision, exceptional pace and a good work ethic.
"He had a great season with Swansea City and has all the attributes needed to become a Manchester United player.
"We are delighted he has signed with our club and we are all looking forward to working with him. This is the perfect environment for Daniel to continue his development."
What happened to Daniel James?
The Welshman made 46 appearances for the Old Trafford side during his maiden campaign, registering 11 goal contributions in the process – four goals and seven assists – and it looked as though it could be the start of a wonderful career at Old Trafford.
It didn’t quite pan out that way however, with James playing only 26 matches during the 2020/21 season, while his goal contributions dipped from 11 to seven, and he began to look out of his depth on numerous occasions.
Indeed, for his Premier League performances that term, the winger ranked in a lowly 22nd across the squad for overall Sofascore rating while finishing tenth for goals and assists, 12th for big chances created and 14th for successful dribbles, indicating that when he did get a chance, the winger failed to consistently showcase his qualities.
Dan James
Instead of making progress, the Welsh winger's career seemed to be going backwards and during the summer of 2021, after only two years at Old Trafford, Solskjaer sold him to Leeds United for a fee of £25m, which even represented a profit for the club, quite staggering considering how poor he had been recently.
Where is Daniel James now?
A move to Leeds was the chance for the former Swansea starlet to get back on his feet and gain regular game time for a club where the pressure perhaps wasn’t as severe as it was in Manchester.
His first season saw the player make 35 appearances across all competitions, while he managed to score four times and grab five assists during his Premier League games, which suggested a slight return to form.
The statistics tell a different story, however, as he failed to even crack the top 20 across the squad in regard to Sofascore rating, while ranking top of the pile for big chances missed and seventh for key passes per game. Damning figures indeed.
He was even criticised by writer Tom Dutton towards the end of that particular season, who said: “Dan James is a pace merchant with poor final ball and awful decision making. Not sure how he ever got a move to United.”
A loan stint at Fulham last term failed to rekindle any of the magic which saw him move to Old Trafford three years prior and according to FBref, when compared to positional peers, James ranked in the lowest 1% for shot-creating actions per 90 (1.27) while even ranking in the lowest 11% for successful take-ons per 90 (0.79) as his attacking input dipped significantly.
These poor performances have led his value to drop dramatically since departing Manchester. He now looks like a shadow of the £25m that Leeds paid for him just two years ago and according to the CIES Football Observatory, the 25-year-old is now valued at €10m (£8.6m), which represents a major decline.
Such a figure is even lower than the underperforming Maguire who is valued at £17m and McTominay, who is expected to cost around £26m. For what it's worth, another flop in Donny van de Beek is rated at only £4.3m now.
Dan James
Evidently, it appears as though United sold him at precisely the right time and struck gold on the Welshman, who doesn’t look as though he will capture the form displayed at Swansea during the embryonic stages of his career.
Although a wonderful move at the time for him, perhaps moving to a club as big as the Red Devils had a negative effect on his career. He flourished in spells during his debut season, but the candle is nearly extinguished on what was a bright flame.
James has grabbed two assists in just four Championship games so far during 2023/24, while creating two big chances and making 2.3 key passes per game, encouraging statistics, as he looks revitalised.
Could this be the start of a career resurgence? Only time will tell.
