Jake Ball will not be available for England’s first Test against South Africa due to a knee strain. He has also been ruled out of Nottinghamshire’s Royal London Cup final at Lord’s on Saturday, head coach Peter Moores has confirmed. The seamer felt pain in his knee when bowling during the second innings of Nottinghamshire’s Specsavers County Championship game against Kent on Tuesday. He went for a scan on Wednesday to assess the damage and was unable to take to the field when the third day of the day-night match resumed after a rain delay.Ball is set to miss the next two weeks of action, which puts him out of contention for the start of the Investec Test series against South Africa, which begins on 6 July at Lord’s. England are already set to be without Chris Woakes and have worries over the fitness of Stuart Broad, Ball’s Notts team-mate, after he suffered a recurrence of his heel problem last week.Nottinghamshire hope Broad will be able to play in the Royal London Cup final, having sat out the pink-ball match at Trent Bridge.”Jake is naturally very, very disappointed to miss out on the final, having previously been made available to play by the ECB, particularly after missing out on selection when Notts beat Glamorgan at Lord’s in 2013,” Moores said. “He’s given his all in this competition when he’s been available to us, and we’ll miss him for what will be a really tough game against Surrey.”Jake is a very strong character and I’m sure he’ll bounce back from this. I know he’ll be wanting us to beat Surrey as much as anybody.”

Burnley Still Tracking 9-Goal EFL Championship Ace

Burnley have not given up hope of landing Sunderland winger Jack Clarke this summer, with reliable journalist Alan Nixon stating that it "isn't over yet" for the Clarets in their pursuit of the youngster.

How many goals has Jack Clarke scored for Sunderland?

The 22-year-old was on fire last season in the Championship for Sunderland and had, statistically, the best campaign of his career to date. He ran rampant with the Black Cats in the second tier, bagging himself nine goals in 45 games and, even more impressively, notching 11 assists along the way.

It meant that his goal contribution rate stood at 20 in total and gave him an average of 0.48 goals or assists per 90 – almost one or the other every second game he played, as per FBref. Considering he also featured in nearly every single second-tier game throughout the previous campaign, it shows how vital he was to the club's cause.

Prior to this breakout year with Sunderland, Clarke had struggled to hit the back of the net too frequently. In League One, he had managed only one strike with the Black Cats and his two stints with Stoke and QPR had led to no goals whatsoever. The early promise he had shown with Leeds, when he had struck two goals in four league starts, had seemed to dwindle and go off course due to a lack of action. Now a regular again, he is finding his feet once more and topped the Championship leaderboard for assists in 2022/23.

Are Burnley signing Jack Clarke?

These showings have now led to a potential Premier League return this summer. Burnley have been keen to seal a deal for the winger but, with the 22-year-old proving to be so vital to his current club, they have turned down all bids from the Clarets so far.

However, that has seemingly not deterred the top-flight side in their efforts to bring him to Turf Moor. According to reliable journalist Nixon, Burnley remain keen to try and snap up Clarke and Vincent Kompany remains a big fan of the player – so they are not out of the running for his signature yet and there is nothing to say they won't launch yet another offer for his services.

"Burnley have a few targets that they are still haggling over… the fact they are still in suggests that one isn’t over yet… and the manager still wants him."

Jack Clarke Sunderland

Having worked with Tony Mowbray last season during Sunderland's run to the play-offs, not many know Clarke like the manager does. Watching the winger in action and working with the youngster has clearly left the former Blackburn boss in awe, as he stated that the forward was a "wonderful" player and added that "nobody can deny" the talent that he possesses.

He's clearly seen in high regard at the Stadium of Light then, and it is no wonder that they don't want to let him leave this summer if they can help it. Burnley, though, look as if they will continue to try and tempt him away from the EFL side – and if they did manage to add him to their own ranks, it would be another shrewd signing for the Clarets.

Player-board relationship 'steadily improving' – Gayle

Chris Gayle said the players and Cricket West Indies need to build on a steadily improving relationship “to get the best players out on the field”

West Indies could feature a full-strength squad across formats as early as August this year, according to Chris Gayle. Gayle said “things have been steadily improving” with regard to the dispute between the players and Cricket West Indies.”The fans were happy to see me back on the field representing West Indies. Hopefully, things can get better. Hopefully I can play a few more games. I definitely want to play the 2019 World Cup,” Gayle said. “Things are beginning to open up a little more now between players and the board. It’s looking good, and we’ve to try and build from this to get the best players out on the field.”Currently, Cricket West Indies follows a stringent policy of considering only those players who have featured in the domestic 50-over competition, under the regime of Julian Hunte and Ernest Hilaire. In recent times, however, the CWI have been more open to negotiation, which Courtney Browne, the chairman of selectors, too spoke of in May.Gayle said discussions regarding the possibility of featuring in a full-strength squad for West Indies’ tour of England in August were positive. “That’s what is actually in discussion. It’s for them to make the announcement, and make it formal so that we know what is what,” Gayle said. “We’ll wait and see what happens.”I can’t get into specific details, just from the little I’ve experienced since coming back, it’s been good. There’s still more discussion to be done. It’s positive. That’s the good thing about it. We’ve to just look to carry on from here. Once we are guided with the rules, if it is going to change fully, we’ll know how to take things further.”Gayle was also optimistic that investment in a young squad, particularly Evin Lewis, would pay off eventually, even though results in recent times – a loss to Afghanistan and an ODI series defeat to India apart from their failure to qualify for the Champions Trophy – haven’t gone their way.”Two centuries in two T20s against India, it’s fantastic,” Gayle said of Lewis. “He’s a small player but a powerful player. He’s very young and very hungry, he’s one for the future. Once more consistency comes into his play, he will be more dangerous. It was a brilliant innings just the other day to put us into that winning position by batting right through the end was fantastic. That’s what I love to see, especially an opener batting right through to take it till the end and win games.”With our experience, we all try and share as much as we can before we go; 2019 is just around the corner. We don’t want to miss out like what happened at the Champions Trophy. We will try and push hard for that and everyone can work collectively to make sure we’re part of the World Cup.”Gayle also said he was “excited” at seeing young fast bowlers challenge him at the nets, and impressed upon the need to maintain his fitness to take every step possible to put himself in fray for selection. “I’m still being active in the gym, putting in the work. These youngsters are very sharp, they try to take your head off saying ‘he’s old now, take him down,'” he said. “You’ve got to be mindful, got to be ready at all times. I’m trying and looking after the body. There’s a lot of travelling, so I try and monitor [my schedules and training] as much as possible.”

Postecoglou Working As If £86m Star Stays at Spurs

Tottenham Hotspur and Ange Postecoglou are "working on the assumption" that Harry Kane stays at the club next season amid interest from Bayern Munich, according to journalist Alasdair Gold.

Is Kane leaving Spurs?

Postecoglou has a difficult job on his hands next season at Tottenham, but it will be a lot easier if Kane is still in north London.

There is still huge uncertainty over the England captain's future amid persistent interest from Bayern Munich, who have recently launched a third £86m bid for Kane.

The fact that Kane captained Spurs during their 5-1 victory over Shakhtar Donetsk in a pre-season friendly on Sunday 5 August and scored four goals against the Ukrainian side has raised the hopes of Tottenham fans desperate for Kane to stay.

Read the latest Tottenham transfer news HERE…

In recent hours, it has been reported the Lilywhites have rejected Bayern's latest offer for Kane which may provide some fans with a lot of optimism over Kane's future.

According to journalist Gold though, Tottenham are preparing for the new season under the assumption that Kane stays at the club, and will simply react to the unfolding situation should things change.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Gold stated: "From what I understand, everyone seems to be working to the assumption that at the moment he [Kane] stays, and if anything else changes that's what they work to.

"That's very much what Postecoglou's saying as well. This isn't me, you know, saying anything like amazing. It's exactly how Postecoglou is treating it. It seems to be the vibe everyone is working to, and it seems to be the players as well is that he's here now, he's a Spurs player, let's crack on planning as if he's there, and if that scenario changes then we deal with that."

He added: "Which is not a good way to operate, to be honest. It's not and that's why, you know, Postecoglou will certainly want a resolution sooner rather than later, so he can really know exactly what's shaping up next."

Kane's four-goal contribution against Shakhtar again highlighted his significance to this Tottenham team and Spurs would certainly miss him hugely next season should he leave for the Bundesliga champions.

Kane managed 30 goals last season in the Premier League despite featuring in an underwhelming Tottenham side that lacked attacking ingenuity. The thought of him playing in an attack-minded Postecoglou team will give many opposition defenders sleepless nights.

However, if Spurs leave making a decision too late in the transfer window, they may be left with little time to bring in an adequate replacement for their star man.

Who are Tottenham signing?

Spurs' busy start to the transfer window has naturally slowed down in recent weeks, but that does not mean that Postecoglou is done exploring the transfer market.

Tottenham made the loans of Dejan Kulusevski and Pedro Porro permanent, before moving to sign Guglielmo Vicario, James Maddison and Manor Solomon early in the summer.

This has since been followed by the signing of young Blackburn centre-back Ashley Phillips who is seen as a player for the future in north London at just 18-years-old.

Phillips will be joined shortly by another centre-back with Wolfsburg's Micky van de Ven soon to be confirmed as a Tottenham player in a £43m move. The Dutch defender attended Spurs' clash with Shakhtar and is expected to complete his medical soon.

Spurs are also finalising a deal for young Argentine Alejo Veliz from Rosario Central after having agreed to meet his £13m release clause, although the forward could be loaned out.

Umar Akmal 'regrets' media outburst against Mickey Arthur

The Pakistan batsman said he was unaware he had breached a PCB code when he made allegations against the coach in the media. However, he has not withdrawn his complaints

While Pakistan batsman Umar Akmal stands by his words against head coach Mickey Arthur, he has admitted that he might have been wrong in approaching the matter in the manner he did – a public outburst in a fiery press conference last month. In his response to the second show-cause notice issued by a three-man PCB committee, Akmal said he wasn’t aware his actions were a breach of the players’ code. The tone of Akmal’s response was significantly more conciliatory than earlier statements he had made on the subject. In a vague explanation, Akmal wrote that he “unaware” about any breach of code, and did what he did “unintentionally in the heat of the moment”. A source close to the player confirmed to ESPNcricinfo that the batsman still held his ground about his claims about Arthur but “regretted” going to the media to talk about his fallout with the coach. The committee was formed to probe Akmal’s allegations that the head coach had used abusive language with him. The claims are yet to be verified, but the PCB found him to be in breach of its code of conduct despite being a non-contracted player. According to one of the committee members, Amjad Hussain – who is the PCB’s media director – players who are not centrally contracted with the PCB but are part of the domestic circuit are still compelled to follow the players’ code of conduct which is enforced at every level.Akmal had promised to apologise to Arthur should the committee find him guilty, but also made it clear he expected the same from Arthur if the verdict was in his favour. Calling himself a national cricketer who had “produced excellent results for Pakistan”, he said that the law did not allow any person to hurt the feelings and self-respect of another individual. He concluded by expressing full faith in the PCB to resolve the matter efficiently, as it was one “of respect, dignity and pride of Pakistan and its nation”.

Pakistan unscathed after Chandimal ton takes SL to 419

Honours were shared on the second day as Pakistan lost no wickets in the final session after the Sri Lanka captain’s hundred helped the visitors post an imposing first-innings total

The Report by Andrew Fidel Fernando29-Sep-2017Stumps Dinesh Chandimal drives on the up•Tom Dulat/Stringer

Sri Lanka rode Dinesh Chandimal’s slow-burn 155 not out to 419 – their best total in six Tests – before Pakistan’s openers moved to 64 unbeaten by stumps. Though the match is more or less in the balance, thanks to Pakistan’s resurgence in the third session, Sri Lanka will also be pleased with their day’s work. Their fans had hoped their team would suck less in this series than they had against India; only the very optimistic would have thought them capable of failing to suck for quite this length of time.Had their tail scrapped together 50 further runs after going to tea at 403 for 7, Sri Lanka could even have claimed to be in control of the contest. As it happened, Mohammad Abbas wiped out the lower order with reverse swing, before Shan Masood and Sami Aslam progressed steadily in the final 80 minutes of play. The left-arm wristspin of Lakshan Sandakan posed them occasional problems, but the remaining bowlers were comfortably negotiated. But although Chandimal would have slept much easier if Sri Lanka had had a breakthrough, this was nevertheless his day. He was somewhat inert in the morning session, hitting two runs off his first 20 balls, but warmed to his work eventually, moving from 60 to 109 inside the extended first session. Where at other times, Chandimal has celebrated a triple-figure score by completing a lap of the field, more or less, this was a more restrained celebration, to go with the mature ethos of the innings. At times, he was barely watchable, deadbatting ball after ball, and poking unambitiously to fielders, but the innings was invaluable to his team. The slow rate of his progress also means Yasir Shah – Sri Lanka’s tormentor in the 2015 series between these sides – has been made to deliver a mammoth 57 overs. Sri Lanka have had moderate success after tiring Yasir out, in the past. After lunch, when Sri Lanka sought to gain a tighter grip on the match, Chandimal briefly showcased his old adventurous avatar. Dusting off his rapid reverse-sweep, he slapped Yasir behind point for four. Next ball, he socked him over mid off for another four.In the morning, Chandimal had left the lion’s share of run-scoring to Niroshan Dickwella. Having begun the day on 42, Dickwella needed only four balls to progress to his fifty. He was not, on this occasion, reckless, as he sometimes tends to be. Merely positive: constantly searching for scoring opportunities – particularly the singles and twos. Balls skidded past the cordon after taking a thick outside edge, other deliveries were scythed to the backward-point rope, and when Yasir came into the attack, Dickwella even ventured the reverse-sweep against the turn, and collected a boundary with that shot. Generally, though, he seemed the more comfortable of the two men at the crease. That is, until he got to 83 – his highest Test score – and Hasan Ali got one to jag in off the seam. The ball would take the inside edge and clatter into the stumps. The stand between himself and his captain had been worth 134, and would remain the best of the innings. For Pakistan, the first two sessions contained several significant frustrations. Twice they thought they had Dilruwan Perera, having kept him scoreless for 32 balls. Both times, the umpire had ruled him out lbw, only for reviews to show Perera had edged the ball both times – incredibly faintly on the second occasion. In fact, Perera had himself seemed unaware that the bat made contact, and only reviewed because he thought the ball was missing the stumps. Umpire Richard Kettleborough even showed obvious displeasure at his colleague’s over-turning of his on-field decision.Eventually, Perera would be out lbw off Haris Sohail, but not before he had contributed 33 runs to a sixth-wicket stand of 92. Beyond that stand though, there was little of note for Sri Lanka. Yasir had Rangana Herath caught reverse-sweeping, before Abbas provided a dramatic finish to the innings. Having bowled Chandimal off a no-ball early in his 27th over, he would go on to dismiss Suranga Lakmal and Nuwan Pradeep off successive deliveries. That means when Abbas bowls in the second innings, he will be on a hat-trick.
