Chris Cairns and Dinesh Mongia, both of the Chandigarh Lions, have been suspended by the ICL. Andrew Hall, the South African allrounder, will replace Cairns as Chandigarh’s captain.A brief statement issued by the ICL did not specify the reason but sources have told Cricinfo that the action was taken by the ICL’s executive board “on disciplinary grounds”.Cairns arrived for the current Twenty20 tournament carrying an ankle injury, and did not disclose his fitness status to the ICL, it has been learnt. “This violates the player’s contract, which clearly states that he needs to be fit when appearing for the tournament, or should inform the ICL in case of an injury,” the sources said. “Cairns has been sent back and will no longer take part in this particular tournament. His ICL contract remains intact, though we will take a final call after this tournament ends (on Nov 16).”Mongia was suspended because he knew about Cairns’ injury in advance but did not share the information with tournament officials. “Dinesh will also not be part of this particular tournament,” the sources said, also justifying the action against both players. “We wanted to send a strong message that nobody can take the ICL for granted, whatever may be the player’s record and reputation.” Apparently, this was conveyed to Cairns and Mongia today by senior ICL officials who had separate meetings with both.Cairns, 38, has flopped in the second season, scoring just 23 runs in three matches. Mongia has scored 90 runs at 30.00, with a wicket as well. Chandigarh are currently sixth in the ICL points table.

Cricket in his genes

Channa Gunasekera, who died aged 77 on Saturday, was a versatile sportsman who took his cricketing genes from his father, Churchill, the first Sri Lankan player to represent an English county

Sa'adi Thawfeeq14-Oct-2008Channa Gunasekera, who died aged 77 on Saturday, was a versatile sportsman who took his cricketing genes from his father, Churchill, the first Sri Lankan player to represent an English county. Four of Channa’s cousins also played first-class cricket in Sri Lanka, making them one of the foremost cricketing families in the country.Channa was born on June 23, 1931, exactly 15 years after Len Hutton, who became his role model. His batting, particularly the stroke through the covers, bore Hutton’s stamp. A technically-correct right-hand batsman, Channa followed his father by captaining his alma mater Royal College and Sinhalese Sports Club.He became an automatic choice as an opening batsman for Sri Lanka in the 1950s. He played for his country at the age of 19 and during his career toured India thrice, scoring five centuries in seven matches. He then captained Colombo CC in the division III tournament before coaching both Royal College and Nalanda College. In 1983 he became a national selector.Channa also excelled in athletics and tennis. He held the Public Schools record for the 120 yards hurdles and on one noteworthy weekend he ran the 4×110 yards relay for his tea firm Brooke Bond in the Mercantile championships, scored 73 not out for SSC in a tournament match against University the next day, and the day after he won a gruelling two-hour Mercantile championship tennis match before rushing back to the University grounds to continue his innings and complete an undefeated century (125) for SSC – an innings which saw him picked for the national side against the touring MCC.A keen student of the game, Channa also wrote regularly in newspapers on various topics apart from commentating on radio and television. Channa and his father provided the first instance of a father and son duo from Sri Lanka becoming members of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC).

Eighteen clubs threaten Sri Lanka boycott

Sri Lanka’s domestic season is facing chaos after 18 clubs threatened to pull out of the Premier League

Sa'adi Thawfeeq14-Oct-2008Sri Lanka’s domestic season is facing chaos after 18 clubs threatened to pull out of the Premier League unless Sri Lanka Cricket’s interim committee enforces the rules and relegates Badureliya SC to the league’s Tier B.The dispute came about after a decision was made that Badureliya, who finished bottom in last season’s competition, would not be demoted to the second division. The clubs have delayed the agreement of fixtures for the domestic season, and the league, which is due to start on October 22, is now facing postponement. The clubs have expressed fears that any move by the interim committee to ignore their protest could lead to first-class cricket coming to a complete standstill making national selection also an issue. Two weeks ago Ajith Jayasekera, the tournament committee chairman, and MahindaHalangoda, another member, resigned from their posts over the interim committee’s failure to relegate Badureliya SC.As a result, the five-member tournament committee is unable to function as it has been reduced to just three members.

Celtic learn Lovric price

An update has emerged on Celtic target Kristijan Lovric, regarding how much Gorica want for his services.

What’s the talk?

According to the Daily Mail, Celtic have enquired about a potential deal to sign Kristijan Lovric this summer to bolster their wide options.

The report claims that Gorica have told Celtic they want £4.2m (€5m) for the forward, with Serie A side Hellas Verona also showing an interest in his services.

Elyounoussi replacement

Celtic must sanction a swoop for Lovric this summer as he could be the perfect replacement for Mo Elyounoussi, who has returned to Southampton following his loan spell with the club. The Norweigan enjoyed a solid season at Celtic Park and now needs to be replaced ahead of the 2021/22 campaign, with Lovric potentially ready to come in and take up that spot on the left side of the attack.

Elyounoussi provided 10 goals and four assists in 34 Scottish Premiership appearances last term. He averaged a SofaScore rating of 6.94, showing himself to be a reliable, consistent, part of Celtic’s attacking lineup.

This means that the club must bring in a suitable replacement who is capable of replicating his successes or bettering it, by coming in and scoring and assisting plenty of goals.

Lovric could have the quality to do that. In the Croatian league last season, the 25-year-old scored 15 goals and created a further five, averaging a phenomenal score of 7.33 over the course of 29 matches. This suggests that he has the ability to consistently provide brilliant end product and, therefore, could be the replacement for Elyounoussi that Ange Postecoglou needs this summer.

HNTV commentator Damir Petravic once compared him to Arjen Robben, Andrea Pirlo, Miralem Pjanic and said he sprints “like Mbappe”. He said: “He dribbles and scores in the style of Robben, shoots free kicks like Pirlo or Pjanic, and knows how to sprint like Mbappe.”

This is high praise indeed for the Croatian attacker and is another reason why the club must ensure that they get a £4.2m deal over the line for him.

His statistics are superb and he must be doing something right to be compared with some of the legends of the game mentioned above. Hopefully, Postecoglou can push for this deal to be done in the coming weeks and have the forward as part of his squad before the end of the window.

AND in other news, Celtic must seal deal for 6ft 2 gem who made one error last season, fans would love it…

Calm Westwood guides Warwickshire home

Ian Westwood salvaged an exciting tie for Warwickshire last night, but he went one better today with a calm 35 to guide his side to their first win of this year’s Twenty20 Cup, beating Somerset by five wickets

Will Luke14-Jun-2008
ScorecardIan Westwood salvaged an exciting tie for Warwickshire last night, but he went one better today with a calm 35 to guide his side to their first win of this year’s Twenty20 Cup, beating Somerset by five wickets.Set a perfectly gettable 132, Warwickshire’s batsmen suffered the same difficulties as Somerset in their innings – namely, struggling with their timing and panicking unnecessarily. Neil Carter hammered 31 from 20 balls, and Jim Troughton 33 at better than a run-a-ball, but wickets continued to fall to raise Somerset hopes. In the end, however, Westwood held his nerve, aided by Ant Botha who clumped Ian Blackwell for four in the final over, to see Warwickshire home.It was Chris Woakes, the nineteen-year-old medium-pacer, who starred for the visitors with the ball, but not before Justin Langer and Marcus Trescothick got Somerset off to a rollicking start. Trescothick was in excellent touch, lofting Chris Martin over the top with casual elegance before bunting the same bowler over midwicket. And though Langer was less authoritative initially, he gradually expanded his strokeplay to pepper the boundary. A four was swung over midwicket before he nailed a six over long-on, and the most delicate of back-cuts brought up Somerset’s fifty in the seventh over. The run-rate began to spiral and Warwickshire’s bowlers lacked discipline, but Somerset’s Twenty20 difficulties came flooding into view when they collapsed like a pack of soggy cards. Ant Botha had Langer trapped in front, before clinging onto a remarkable caught-and-bowled to dismiss James Hildreth, before two excellent yorkers removed Somerset’s big two – in all senses of the word – Trescothick and Blackwell in the space of five balls. From 78 for 0, Somerset had slipped to 92 for 4.Enter Woakes, who earlier ought to have had Trescothick caught at midwicket. Bowling full and straight – such basics that often disappear from bowlers’ minds in Twenty20 – he rattled through Somerset’s middle-lower-order, twice hitting the stumps, to finish with Man-of-the-Match figures of 4 for 21. Craig Kieswetter gave another glimpse of his burgeoning talent with 19 from 12, but it was too little, too late.Or was it? Trescothick gave them a lift with an outstanding one-handed catch, running in from short midwicket, to cling onto Jonathan Trott’s leading edge, while Carter, who laced five fours and a huge six in his 31, was bowled by Mark Turner. When Tony Frost was bowled by the energetic Alfonso Thomas, a sizeable crowd sensed an upset with Warwickshire slipping to 57 for 3.Westwood to the rescue, once again – aided by Troughton’s 33 – who dealt mainly in singles, nudging through the leg-side and running well between the wickets. The pair’s partnership had extended to 53 when Troughton was bowled, attempting a needlessly bold inside-out stroke over the covers.Fortunately for Warwickshire, Westwood’s decision-making was far sounder, and a four through midwicket off Blackwell sealed their first win of the summer.

Brown and Benham thwart Lancashire

A round-up of the County Championship action on July 23, 2008

Cricinfo staff23-Jul-2008Two determined 70s from Michael Brown and Chris Benham gave Hampshire a fighting chance in their match against Lancashire on the second day at Old Trafford. Lancashire resumed on 261 for 5, and Francois du Plessis’ 57 – his third fifty this season – elevated his side’s total to a challenging 357. Imran Tahir, the Hampshire legspinner, removed Gary Keedy to pick up his fifth wicket, but Hampshire were soon in a sticky position at 35 for 3. Saj Mahmood removed Sean Ervine in his first over – only thanks to a stunning catch from du Plessis at point – before John Crawley inexplicably left a straight one from Glen Chapple. After Michael Lumb was out for 9, Brown and Benham set about their recovery mission in contrasting styles, but put on a vital fourth-wicket stand of 139 and remain unbeaten going into the third day.For John Ward’s report of the second day between Nottinghamshire and Yorkshire at Trent Bridge click here.Northamptonshire are in complete control of their match against Leicestershire at Northampton, forcing the visitors to follow-on. At stumps on the second day, Leicestershire had fallen to 8 for 1 with David Lucas picking up his fifth wicket. Earlier, David Sales moved onto 150 while Lance Klusener cracked 65 as Northamptonshire added a further 99 from their overnight 274 for 4. And then the hosts’ bowlers took over. Nicky Boje pulled off a stunning gully catch to remove Matt Boyce before Tom New edged Lucas to third slip. 13 for 2 became 60 for 4 when Jacques du Toit fell to the impressive Lucas, and although Jim Allenby offered resistance with 47, Leicestershire were steamrolled for 173. Following-on, Nadeem Malik, the nightwatchman, fell just before the close as Leicestershire face a huge task to save the match with two days to go.Ben Smith’s 93 helped Worcestershire steal a 50-run lead over Middlesex on the second day at Lord’s, as the visitors closed on 350 for 9. Worcestershire began confidently, Darryl Mitchell and Stephen Moore putting on 50 for the opening partnership, but Danny Evans lured Moore into driving at a wider delivery to make the breakthrough. Vikram Solanki came and went, shortly followed by Mitchell when he was trapped in front by Tim Murtagh. At 76 for 3 Worcestershire were beginning to slip, but they recovered after lunch – largely thanks to Smith, whose fifty came from 83 balls. Stephen Davies (22) and Gareth Batty (39) each shared in half-century stands with Smith who, on 93, was beaten by a lovely piece of flight from Murali Kartik, caught at silly point.Danish Kaneria’s three wickets has put Essex in a strong position on the second day against Gloucestershire at Chelmsford, after the visitors only managed a first-innings lead of four runs. Essex might have had the match by the scruff of the neck, however, as Varun Chopra and Jason Gallian put on 74 for the opening wicket. But when Chopra was bowled by Mark Hardinges, Essex struggled. Vikram Banerjee removed Neil Dexter, and when Ryan ten Doeschate shouldered arms to the same bowler, Gloucestershire had Essex limping on 109 for 6. James Foster, however, ensured Essex wouldn’t fold completely, cracking another fifty and was well supported by James Middlebrook (41) to loft their side to 279. Kaneria then took control, removing William Porterfield, Alex Gidman and Chris Taylor, leaving Gloucestershire tottering on 70 for 6, leading by just 66.

Brighton set to pip Celtic to Kaoru Mitoma

Brighton look set to pip Celtic to the signing of Japanese winger Kaoru Mitoma, according to Tokyo Sports, as cited by Sport Witness.

The Lowdown: Mitoma profiled

Mitoma, who has represented Japan at Under-23 level, currently plays for J1 League side Kawasaki Frontale.

The 24-year-old, primarily a left winger, has just 12 months left on his contract. He has scored 12 goals and registered five assists in all competitions this year.

Mitoma handed in a transfer request a day after Ange Postecoglou was announced as Celtic boss, with speculation mounting over a potential Parkhead move. However, it doesn’t look like he will be moving to Scotland.

The Latest: Source shares update

According to Tokyo Sports, as cited by Sport Witness, Brighton are set to secure Mitoma’s services. The Seagulls have reached a ‘general agreement’, with a deal set to go through following the Olympic Games in his homeland.

Mitoma is unlikely to be granted a work permit in England so could end up moving on loan to Belgian side Royal Union Saint-Gilloise, who have close connections with Brighton.

A source close to the player told Tokyo Sports regarding his next destination: “I heard that it was decided to go to the Premier League.”

The Verdict: Edwards as an alternative?

It remains to be seen just how strong Celtic’s interest in Mitoma had been, although another winger who has been linked with a move to Parkhead is Kyle Edwards.

The former West Brom man is now a free agent and the Hoops are thought to be negotiating personal terms with the 23-year-old. A move would cost Celtic £300,000 in compensation and Edwards and Mitoma can both play on either flank.

Postecoglou wants a new winger through the door before his first competitive game in charge on July 20, so perhaps Edwards will be Celtic’s man over Mitoma, who now looks unattainable.

Shaun Marsh says it was an emotional moment when he was told he would be making his Twenty20 international debut in Barbados, fulfilling his dream of following his father Geoff into the national team. Marsh and his Western Australian team-mate Luke Ronchi will both play their first matches for Australia against West Indies on Friday.Australia have confirmed that Nathan Bracken is the only one of the one-day specialists who have joined the squad in the Caribbean who will not play in the Twenty20 match. Brad Haddin will sit out to give his broken finger a chance to recover and Andrew Symonds is being rested after having back spasms in the third Test.Marsh said it was a memorable moment when he was told of his inclusion. “There were a few emotions,” Marsh told . “Obviously I’ve worked hard for it and I just can’t wait to represent my country. I’ve been dreaming about this for a long time, to be over here and be in the change rooms with all the guys has just been fantastic so far.”Marsh has already received high praise from the captain Ricky Ponting, who said the thing he is most looking forward to in the Twenty20 match is watching Marsh bat. Ponting will be leading a relatively inexperienced international side with Bracken, Haddin, Symonds and Stuart Clark the four men to sit out, although it will be an XI with significant batting depth.West Indies are already without their captain Chris Gayle for the match and they could also lose their stand-in leader Ramnaresh Sarwan, who is nursing a groin injury he sustained during the third Test. If Sarwan is unavailable, Dwayne Bravo would be likely to lead the side, although the coach John Dyson said it was still possible Sarwan would play.”We’re just waiting to see what condition it is in [before the game],” Dyson told . “It’s nothing major. We are mindful that we have five one-days coming up. In this Twenty20 form of the game it can be fairly hectic.”Australia Shaun Marsh, Michael Clarke, Ricky Ponting (capt), Shane Watson, Michael Hussey, David Hussey, Cameron White, James Hopes, Luke Ronchi (wk), Brett Lee, Mitchell Johnson.West Indies (from) Xavier Marshall, Andre Fletcher, William Perkins, Ramnaresh Sarwan (capt), Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Kieron Pollard, Dwayne Bravo, Denesh Ramdin (wk), Darren Sammy, Jerome Taylor, Sulieman Benn, Daren Powell, Fidel Edwards, Kemar Roach.

Everton ace Calvert-Lewin ignored

Lots of Everton fans have been left to react as some footage emerged involving Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

As shared by Toffee TV on Twitter, Gareth Southgate hugs and congratulates a number of England players on the touchline after their 2-0 win over Germany at Wembley Stadium in their last 16 tie on Tuesday evening.

However, as Calvert-Lewin goes to try and get his attention, the Three Lions manager appears to ignore him.

The Merseyside club striker was controversially left out of Southgate’s 23-man squad in what was one of the biggest games in England’s history, and so some members of the Goodison Park faithful have associated this with the manager appearing to ignore him on the touchline.

Of course, Southgate could have purely missed him unintentionally, but the footage did not go down well with some Toffees supporters.
