Newcastle takeover news on CAT case

A journalist has now dropped some enticing insight into the upcoming Newcastle United takeover case.

The Lowdown: CAT case

The Competition Appeal Tribunal (CAT) case between Mike Ashley and the Premier League over the stalled takeover deal with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) consortium is set to take place next Wednesday 10:30 am.

This is separate from the arbitration hearing, which should now commence next year after further delays.

The Latest: Case insight

Journalist Simon Zekaria has now given some insight into the CAT case, claiming that both the St. James’ Park faithful and the English top flight have issues to do with confidentiality:

“I have learnt that the Premier League and NUFC are deep in confidentiality issues. Even for next week’s hearing, which has a narrow legal focus, there is lot that they don’t want to be revealed.”

The Verdict: Enticing

It is certainly set up to be an enticing case, as both sides will feel as if they have strong arguments to suggest why the proposed takeover stalled and the direction in where it is heading.

The North East club seem to feel that the Premier League are the ones keeping information to themselves, as they released statement on their official website back in July citing the need for ‘transparency and fairness in football governance’, and also called for the arbitration proceedings to be made public, suggesting that they have nothing to hide.

Nonetheless, the results of the forthcoming case should give a clearer picture over the takeover’s direction, and the Toon Army will be hoping that it is a positive one for the Tyneside outfit heading into arbitration in 2022.

Forest fans react to Cooper news

Many Nottingham Forest supporters have reacted to the latest news regarding the next manager at the club following Chris Hughton’s departure.

Hughton left the club this morning after the 2-0 home defeat to Middlesbrough was the club’s sixth defeat in seven in this season’s Championship, leaving the Reds bottom of the table with one point.

The 62-year-old took over at the start of last season and guided Forest to safety with 52 points, but this season has struggled.

Following the departure of Hughton, news has emerged from The Athletic’s Paul Taylor that former Swansea City manager Steve Cooper is on the Forest radar, with his ability to improve young players and track record of leading Swansea to back-to-back playoffs noted.

But with the likes of Chris Wilder, Frank Lampard and Alex Neil available, there has been mixed reaction amongst the Forest fanbase regarding the link with Cooper.

Steven Reid will take temporary charge of the first team, for the time being, starting with Huddersfield Town on Saturday.

Forest fans react to Cooper links

These Forest fans have taken to Twitter to react to the news linking Cooper with the vacancy at the City Ground, as one supporter called the latest links ‘dreadful’.

“Another defensive manager, lol, when will we ever learn.”

“I’d take him in a heartbeat.”

“No no no. It’s Hughton all over again. Defensive, lacking creativity. Only three teams had fewer shots on goal than Swansea. Really bad posession rate and pass completion rate. If this is the man, I’m sorry to say Forest are blinded again. You get the football you hire.”

Saeed Ajmal reported for suspect action

Saeed Ajmal, the Pakistan offspinner, has been reported for a suspect bowling action

Alex Brown26-Apr-2009Saeed Ajmal, the Pakistan offspinner, has expressed surprise at being reported for a suspect action, and believes Shane Watson might have played a role in drawing the umpires’ attention to his doosra. Ajmal suspected Watson spoke with Asad Rauf and Billy Bowden about his bowling action during the second one-day international at the Dubai Sports City Stadium; two days after he had befuddled Australia’s batsmen with a series of doosras in a spell of 2-19.Whether prompted or not by the Australian allrounder, the umpires found enough cause for concern to report Ajmal’s action, making him the second off-spinner to be cited for a doosra in a fortnight. Johan Botha, the South African limited overs vice-captain, was reported after the fourth ODI against Australia in Port Elizabeth, and will have his action tested at the University of Western Australia this week.”They told me in the first game some of my doosras had [a] little elbow bend,” Ajmal told Cricinfo. “I was very surprised. My first-class debut was in 1996 and this has not happened before. I think Watson was talking [with] umpires about this. He was speaking with them and when the match finished the umpires said there is a problem. [But] I am not disappointed. I am playing tomorrow [in the third ODI]. It is not a problem.”Pakistan’s coach, Intikhab Alam, was more critical of the process that resulted in Ajmal being reported after the second ODI against Australia. Describing the spinner as a “gutsy young man”, Alam questioned the handling of the matter by the umpires.”Ajmal has played against four countries and nobody raised any finger on his action and suddenly this decision comes,” he told AFP. “I think they [ICC] are lacking consistency in this process. He bowled exceptionally well and suddenly they decided that he has a problem with his action.”Rauf and Bowden, along with off-field officials Zameer Haider and Nadeem Ghauri, submitted a report to the ICC in which it was stated that, having monitored Ajmal’s action over the two ODIs in Dubai, there was sufficient concern for it to be scrutinised further. Ajmal, the ICC and the PCB will be sent footage of the bowler’s action, and Ajmal is required to present himself for testing by an ICC-approved biomechanist within 21 days. The latest report comes as Botha prepares to fly to Perth for re-examination on his contentious doosra. The citing of two off-spinners in a fortnight has prompted speculation of an ICC crackdown on doosras, but Alam was confident Ajmal would be cleared and free to bowl the delivery in future matches.”Murali bowls such a delivery and he was cleared, Harbhajan was cleared, and there is no difference between these two and Ajmal,” Alam said. “I don’t agree that Ajmal bowls a different doosra, there is only one kind of doosra. Ajmal has hyper-mobility in his arm and I hope everything goes well for him.”Ajmal can continue to play for cricket until the tests on his action are conducted. If, during the examination, he bowls a single delivery with an elbow flexion in excess of 15 degrees, he will be suspended and ordered to undertake remedial work on his delivery motion.Meanwhile, Nathan Hauritz, the Australian off-spinner, said he was experimenting with his own version of the doosra in the nets. “I just think it takes a lot of time, a lot of practice, just trying to get all the body parts right and in the right place,” Hauritz told AAP. “I try to practice it two or three times a week, about 10 balls, because it gets very painful, my body’s not used to it.”

Liverpool fans excited by Kessie rumour

A number of Liverpool supporters are excited after the Reds were linked with a future move for AC Milan midfielder Franck Kessie.

It ended up being a disappointing summer transfer window from a Liverpool perspective, even though Jurgen Klopp still has a strong squad at his disposal. Ibrahima Konate proved to be the only new signing, with the centre-back coming in from Bundesliga giants RB Leipzig.

[freshpress-quiz id=“359326”]

The exit of Gini Wijnaldum to Paris Saint-Germain arguably heightened the need for a new midfielder to come in, but Klopp has seemingly decided to trust his current options. However, there might be some movement on that front in 2022.

According to Gazzetta dello Sport [via Anfield Edition on Twitter], Liverpool are eyeing up a move for Milan star Kessie next summer, at which point the 24-year-old will be a free agent, having just turned down a fresh contract offer at the San Siro.

The Ivorian has earned comparisons with compatriot and Premier League winner Yaya Toure from former Milan striker Antonio Cassano, who chimed: “I want Kessie in my team, he scores, he assists, he has personality, he has quality, he doesn’t lose the ball, he is intelligent. I’m watching him carefully, with Roma it was devastating.”

Spurs fans blast Davies

Flocking to Twitter, many Tottenham Hotspur fans have destroyed defender Ben Davies for his performance against Crystal Palace.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s men fell to a 3-0 defeat at Selhurst Park, their first defeat of his tenure in charge, with Tottenham’s 100 per cent start coming to a swift end this afternoon.

In what was a day to forget, Palace swept Spurs aside in the second half thanks to a brace from their summer signing Odsonne Edouard.

Indeed, missing a plethora of first team players, Nuno watched on as his depleted defence were put to the sword in south London.

One man in particular who drew the wrath of Lilywhites supporters was Wales international Davies, who managed the lowest SofaScore rating (5.7) out of any player on the field.

He also conceded a penalty in what was a nightmare outing for the 28-year-old.

Arif, Abbas help Sialkot strengthen top spot

A round-up of the fourth day’s play in the sixth-round matches of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy

Cricinfo staff29-Jan-2009Group AMohammad Wasim’s century and Junaid Khan’s four-wicket haul helped Khan Research Laboratories (KRL) crush Sui Southern Gas Corporation (SSGC) by 131 runs in Rawalpindi. Wasim’s run-a-ball 101 included 12 boundaries and a six and he helped them extend their lead of 112 from the first innings. KRL finally declared on 229 for 7, setting SSGC a difficult 342 for victory. SSGC’s reply never really took off as they lost wickets regularly – the largest partnership of 75 for the fifth wicket between Wajid Ali and Ahmed Zeeshan being the only welcome interruption. In addition to Junaid’s 4 for 40, Sohail Tanvir and Jaffar Nazir picked up two wickets apiece to bowl out SSGC in 88.4 overs.A 75-run stand between Sajid Shah and wicketkeeper Farhan Iqbal for the third wicket gave Habib Bank Limited (HBL) a six-wicket victory against Lahore Shalimar at the Gaddafi Stadium. Needing another 85 to win, they lost openers Ahmed Shehzad and Imran Nazir in quick succession very early, but Sajid and Farhan ensured they was no further damage. While Sajid hit eight fours in his 47-ball 38, Farhan managed seven during his 37. Both fell with the score on 104, and it was then left to Fahad Masood and Khaqan Arsal to take them home.Samiullah Khan and Imran Ali once again starred with the ball as defending champions Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) ran out winners against Pakistan Customs by 177 runs in Gujranwala. They declared on their overnight score of 224 for 8 and from then on the spotlight was on the seamers. Needing 281 for the win, the Customs batsmen were all at sea as both Samiullah and Imran picked up five-fors to end with identical nine-wicket match-hauls.The Water and Power Development Authority(WAPDA) batsmen ensured some decent practice against table-toppers Pakistan International Airlines in Sialkot. With no play possible on the first two days, both teams emerged dry with zero points. Resuming on 89 for 2, the WAPDA batsmen looked in no hurry, with the highlights of the innings being the two half-centuries from Ali Azmat and Imranullah Aslam.Group BNaved Arif and Nayyer Abbas worked in tandem to bundle out Multan and help group leaders Sialkot continue their supremacy at the top with a comprehensive 239-run win in Okara. The declaration came when play began on the final day, as Multan were set a target of 340. It was a toothless display from Multan as the batsmen struggled – the highest score was 16 from opener Hasnain Raza. They eventually folded for 100, with Arif picking up 6 for 33 to finish with nine for the match, and Abbas taking the remaining four wickets for 22.Islamabad battled bravely to secure first-innings points against Faisalabad at the Iqbal Stadium. Zahoor Khan and Zulqarnain had nearly pulled off an unexpected win for Faisalabad but Faiyyaz Ahmed’s gritty 27 off 84 balls ensured the visitors held on at 164 for 7. Faisalabad resumed on 160 for 3 as Zeeshan Asif brought up his half-century and added another 50 runs with overnight half-centurion Usman Arshad. Both scored 75 as the hosts declared at 246 for 6, setting Islamabad 240 to win. Farrukh Hayat and Umair Khan provided a steady start, but Zahoor removed Hayat and Wasim Abbas, paving the way for Zulqarnain to trigger a middle-order collapse. Zulqarnain’s 3 for 35 was a brilliant spell of bowling in which he accounted for captain Zohaib Ahmed, Imad Wasim and Rauf Akbar, but though it did rattle the visitors, it was not enough at the end.The Hyderabad bowlers put on an inspired show to hand their team first-innings points against Abbottabad at the Niaz Stadium. Abbottabad were looking confident from their overnight 272 for 3, but lost Adnan Raees early for 76, trapped leg before by Lal Kumar. Riaz Kail continued patiently, adding 60 for the fifth wicket with wicketkeeper Fawad Khan. But Kail fell on 65, after managing six boundaries in his 201-ball innings. His dismissal exposed the tail and Kumar and Kashif Bhatti wasted no time, shooting out the visitors for 429, 42 behind Hyderabad’s first-innings total. And it was Kumar and Bhatti who were at the crease when Hyderabad finished the day at 23 for 1.Rawalpindi brought a dull end to the proceedings at Lahore City Cricket Association Ground, batting Lahore Ravi out of the match. They were quite content with the points gained by virtue of their first-innings lead of 37, as Awaiz Zia scored a classy unbeaten 125 off 210 balls with Babar Naeem keeping him company during the second-wicket stand of 143. Naeem fell four short of his hundred, but Usman Saeed continued the attack on the Lahore bowlers, putting on another 148 with Zia. Usman’s dismissal on 85, with the score on 321 for 3, marked the end of the match which was called off after 76 overs in the day.Fifties from Mahfooz Sabri and Mohammad Rizwan powered Peshawar to a lead of 252 against bottom-placed Quetta at the Arbab Niaz Stadium. Sabri fell five short of a well-deserved hundred, hitting 13 fours in his 145-ball effort, while Rizwan remained unbeaten on 52 when Peshwar declared on 303 for 7. The Quetta batsmen looked an improved lot from the first innings as the opening stand of Shahzad Tareen and Taimur Ali put on 59, before Nauman Ali dismissed both. At stumps, Quetta were 114 for 3 with Sabir Hussain and Ata-ur-Rehman holding fort.

West Ham in Weston McKennie race

West Ham United are among several sides eyeing a move for Weston McKennie before Tuesday’s deadline…

What’s the word?

That’s according to Italian outlet Tuttosport, who claim that the Irons have made contact with Juventus over a potential move for the 22-year-old American.

It’s thought that the Serie A giants have already planned for his departure by targeting Axel Witsel as his replacement but before he can be signed, McKennie must be moved on.

Everton and Aston Villa are also mooted with interest in the report, whilst London rivals Spurs are another team that has been linked to the midfielder.

The former Schalke 04 man is said to be available for a fee in the region of €30m (£26m).

Imagine him and Zouma

The Hammers are closing in on the signing of Kurt Zouma from Chelsea this week, bolstering a key area for David Moyes and one that he had made a priority in the past few weeks.

He’s completed his medical and is likely to be announced as a West Ham player in the coming days.

There are only a few days remaining in the summer transfer window and Moyes still needs plenty of other arrivals, particularly in attack, where Michail Antonio is still the only recognised senior striker.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-west-ham-news-transfer-rumours-the-latest-gossip-and-much-much-more-2” title= “Read the latest West Ham team and injury news, transfer rumours, gossip and much, much more!”]

However, the 58-year-old Scot has rejected the chance to sign an array of names, which suggests he may well be – bizarrely – happy with the current situation.

Further depth in midfield wouldn’t go amiss, either, so that may be why links to McKennie have surfaced and he’d be an excellent option to round off their summer business.

He may well have struggled for minutes last season, starting only 18 of his 34 league appearances, but that didn’t stop him from displaying his box-to-box and versatile credentials.

The £22.5m-rated dynamo, whose skillset has been described as “unique” by USA coach Gregg Berhalter, still found the net five times from the engine room, whilst he averaged 1.8 tackles, 1.5 interceptions, 1.4 key passes and 1.2 dribbles per 90 minutes, via WhoScored.

It’s exactly why he’s been lauded as a ‘true midfield warrior’ that can play in any central role.

“He’s an outstanding talent. In the No.6 or No.8 position he has the mentality, a real working mentality that you need,” claimed his former Schalke head coach David Wagner. “And he’s brave on the ball as well. He can be one of the best midfielders in the Bundesliga.”

Moyes can look to complete his summer business this weekend with a swoop for the 24-cap USA international. He would add some much-needed depth to his midfield armoury of Declan Rice, Tomas Soucek and the retiring Mark Noble.

Over-rate still a worry for Australia

Expect to see the Australians running faster between overs during the first Test against New Zealand following their costly failure to keep up with the required rate in Nagpur last week

Expect to see the Australians running faster between overs during the first Test against New Zealand following their costly failure to keep up with the required rate in Nagpur this month. A new series begins on Thursday and the hosts are looking at ways to be more efficient in the field after a match that ended in a team fine and contributed to the 2-0 loss to India.Ricky Ponting remains upset by criticism that he put his own interests ahead of his side’s when bowling part-timers at a crucial stage in an effort to lift the rate instead of facing a suspension for falling behind. The former captains Allan Border and Ian Chappell criticised his decisionmaking and neither man is in Ponting’s immediate plans for a chat.”I haven’t spoken to either of those two gentlemen and probably won’t for a while,” Ponting said during a lunch in Brisbane. “That’s fine, I understand people are going to have opinions on players and my captaincy. A lot of times you totally respect that. I don’t mind people questioningtactics of mine, but the thing that worried me the most was everyone thinking I put myself ahead of the team and its interests. I thought that was a little bit unfair.”If Australia had fallen six overs behind, Ponting could have been banned from the first Test, but after using Cameron White, Michael Hussey and Michael Clarke along with Jason Krejza they finished two overs below the target. Ponting was fined 20% of his match fee and the players were docked 10%.Clarke, the vice-captain, said the team had held more discussions on how to lift the over-rate during the first Test. “It’s just something we are going to have to continually talk about, and keep at the forefront of our minds during the game,” he said. “If it means bowlers leaving their hat atfine leg instead of giving it to the umpire, if it means running between our overs, it’s just something we are going to have to continually work on.”If Australia choose a four-man pace attack it will increase the length of time for each delivery, a problem they encountered in Perth last year when Shaun Tait was elevated to the team. Clarke did not expect the issue to have any influence over whether the offspin of Krejza was preferred toanother fast bowler on a Brisbane surface that has been under cover since the weekend.

van Wyk ton puts Eagles on top

A round-up of the latest matches in South Africa’s domestic one-day competition

Cricinfo staff22-Dec-2008Eagles moved back to the top of the table with a six-wicket win over Dolphins in Kimberley thanks to a fine 126 from Morne van Wyk in Kimberley. Eagles were set a challenging 268 from their 45 overs, and although they lost Dean Elgar and Rilee Rossouw in quick succession, Boeta Dippenaar (48 from 64) and Ryan Bailey (60 from just 43 balls) took them through to a comfortable win with one over to spare. Imraan Khan was the standout batsman for Dolphins, continuinghis fine form with an unbeaten 110 – his maiden ton – while Jon Kent smacked a stylish 50 from 45. It wasn’t quite enough, however.Lions’ miserable form in this competition continued at the hands of Cape Cobras who romped to an emphatic 48-run win in Potchefstroom. Cape Cobras compiled a daunting 295 for 8 as Henry Davids top-scored with 97 while Stiaan van Zyl made 81. The real injection in momentum came from Justin Ontong who lifted three sixes in addition to four powerful fours, cracking 54 from 31 as Lions’ bowlers began to suffer. And to ice their cake, 20-year-old Richard Levi heaved 29 from 16. Lions’ chase began promisingly when Alviro Petersen stroked 50 and Vaughn van Jaarsveld a powerful 84, but Rory Kleinveldt took 3 for 26 while Claude Henderson also picked up three wickets and the Lions’ tail failed to wag.Dolphins fought back from their defeat against Eagles earlier in the week, recording a nine-win over Warriors inDurban. Khan’s prolific form continued, and he appeared set for another hundred before he was bowled by Wayne Parnell – the pick of the bowlers with 4 for 56 – for 86. Ahmed Amla’s 64 ensured a competitive total of 250. Warriors’ chase began promisingly – Michael Smith got the innings off to a flyer with 54 from 59 – but despite a number of starts, wickets continued to fall. Davey Jacobs gave them hope with a slick 73 from 71 but was bowled by Jayasuriya who finished with 3 for 39 as Warriors fell 9 runs short.Dillon du Preez and Thandi Tshabalala took six wickets between them in Eagles’ second comprehensive win of the week, beating Titans by 12 runs at Centurion. A run-a-ball 93 from Ryan Bailey anchored Eagles’ competitive, if below-par, 244 for 6 and shared in a fifth-wicketstand worth 158 with Boeta Dippenaar (73 from 89). Titans’ Blake Snijman gave his side hope with 73, but du Preez and Tshabalala maintained their lines to leave the tail with too much to do.Titans responded to their defeat with an impressive five-wicket win over Cape Cobras, however, as Albie Morkel smashed 55 to guide them to their target of 246 at Newlands. Cape Cobras were indebted to Stiaan van Zyl’s second slick knock of the week; his 108 was comfortably the highestscore, though Levi assisted with 47 while Ryan Canning cracked some lofty late-order blows. Titans’ chase began poorly, slipping to 92 for 3, but Morkel and Farhaan Behardien – who made 67 from 63 – took Titans to a cantering win with 25 balls to spare as Cobras suffered from the absence of Charl Langeveldt.Dolphins moved to fourth in the table after beating bottom-placed Lions by five wickets in Pietermaritzburg. Fifties from Vaughn van Jaarsveld and Petersen lifted Lions to 229 but that man Khan, yet again, stabled Dolphins’ response with another fifty. He cracked 74 from 82 withseveral scorching drives through the infield, and was dropped on 6, while Amla made 58 from 59. Both fell within four balls of each other but HD Ackerman stroked 44 while Pierre de Bruyn struck 21 from 26 as Dolphins crept home with four balls remaining.Player of the week – Imraan KhanDolphins might be languishing in fourth place, but without Imraan Khan’s prolific scoring they might easily have slipped further down the table. Khan cracked 110, 86 and 74 – all innings of high class, though he isn’t quite as dashing or extravagant as his opening partner Sanath Jayasuriya. Nevertheless, his method is working and he now has 400 runs from seven matches, averaging 66.66.

Liverpool fans love Diogo Jota update

Some Liverpool supporters have been reacting to the news that Diogo Jota has been working with a former sprinter ahead of the new season.

The Reds had a season to forget in 2020/21, even though they ended up securing a third-place finish in the Premier League.

In a campaign full of problems, Jota was one of the positives, enjoying a good first season at Anfield which saw him score 13 goals in 30 appearances.

[freshpress-quiz id=“359326”]

The Portuguese made an immediate impression at his new club, and had it not been for a three-month injury layoff, the 24-year-old would arguably have had an even bigger influence for the Reds.

According to The Daily Mail [via Anfield Watch on Twitter], Jota has been training with former Olympic medal-winning sprinter Francis Obikwelu in order to make a flying start to the new season. The forward was already known for his superb pace, and this attribute could be even further embellished as a result of his training with Obikwelu.
