Newcastle: Schar disappointed v Brentford

The first game of Eddie Howe’s reign as Newcastle United’s manager was a six-goal thriller at St James’ Park which saw the Magpies rescue a point against Brentford with a 3-3 draw.

Newcastle opened the scoring with a goal from Jamaal Lascelles at the 10-minute mark before Brentford equalised just a minute later. The Toon then went behind twice and equalised twice with goals from Joelinton and Allan Saint-Maximin, leaving them still without a win in the Premier League with 12 games played.

One player who featured against Thomas Frank’s side but didn’t exactly prove himself to Howe on this occasion was Fabian Schar.

Before being replaced in the 71st minute by Sean Longstaff, the defender failed to even make one tackle, lost 87.5% of his duels, lost the ball on 10 occasions (four more times than Ciaran Clark), gave away four fouls and completed just 16 of his 26 passes. He earning an uninspiring overall match rating of 6.6/10, making him the joint-second lowest rated outfield player on the day for Newcastle according to SofaScore. Only Callum Wilson and Clark ranked lower among the outfield starters.

One saving grace for the Switzerland international was the fact that he managed to make an off-the-line clearance to deny the visitors another goal.

With those figures in mind, it’s safe to say that the 29-year-old would have hoped to put in a better performance to prove to Howe that he should be in the team going forward.

With Newcastle’s next game in the Premier League taking them to visit Arsenal next weekend, Schar will undoubtedly be hoping that his manager will keep faith in him and give him the opportunity to put in a better performance than he managed to today. If not, he could find it difficult to get into the side as the season progresses.

Opinion: Jurgen Klopp reunion with Ciro Immobile could complete Liverpool’s attack

With Roberto Firmino, Mo Salah and Sadio Mane consistently firing in Liverpool’s attack, Premier League clubs have plenty of reason to fear the league leaders but a recent report suggests the final piece of the attacking jigsaw is in their sights.

Indeed, according to a recent report from Italian media outlet Il Messaggero, Liverpool are interested in signing Lazio’s Ciro Immobile and they had scouts in attendance on Sunday afternoon when he scored what proved to be a consolation goal to half the deficit against Napoli.

The same report claims that Lazio are understandably reluctant to sell their star player in January, and would only consider an ‘indecent’ 100 million euro (£88 million) proposal.

That Immobile has managed to score an incredible 81 goals in 113 appearances for Lazio can go a long way to explaining the extortionate asking price which has been quoted.

Klopp was in charge of Dortmund when Immobile moved to the club from Torino in a £15.5 million deal, but he struggled to adapt to his new surroundings and ended his debut campaign with just three Bundesliga goals in 24 appearances.

A return of four goals from six Champions League appearances in the same season did not spare him from being selected on a list of the three biggest Dortmund flops in the past twenty years (as per Il Messaggero), and he returned to Italy with a point to prove when he joined Lazio in July 2016.

The progress Immobile has made in Italy suggests he would be a fantastic addition to Liverpool’s squad, offering an extra layer of competition at centre-forward to complete the attack.

A January deal is incredibly unlikely, particularly at £88 million, but the fact Liverpool sent scouts to San Paolo on Sunday to see Immobile in action suggests their interest is serious and a summer deal is something they are taking into deep consideration.

His presence would give Liverpool a more traditional centre-forward option as an alternative to the deeper-lying Firmino and the natural wide man Salah, lending Klopp the opportunity to shift his tactical approach in tight encounters while naturally bolstering Liverpool’s strength in depth.

The likes of Daniel Sturridge and Divock Origi are clearly not up to the standard required to help Liverpool re-establish themselves as one of Europe’s most feared clubs, but replacing the aforementioned pairing by bringing Immobile to Anfield would give Klopp a complete set of options to chose from at centre-forward.

Jack Brooks hit a timely first half-century in County Championship cricket to put Northamptonshire in a strong position on the second day at Bristol

ScorecardJack Brooks’ half century extended Northamptonshire’s lead to daunting proportions•PA PhotosJack Brooks hit a timely first half-century in County Championship cricket to put Northamptonshire in a strong position on the second day at Bristol. Gloucestershire looked to be back in the game after the action-packed opening day when reducing their opponents to 134 for 8 in their second innings, a lead of 234.But Brooks (53) was joined by Paul Harrison (44) in a ninth-wicket stand of 82 and Northamptonshire were eventually bowled out for 243, leaving Gloucestershire a daunting 344 for victory on a pitch still offering plenty of assistance to the seamers. The home side closed on 85 for 2 and will need to bat a lot better than in their first innings to amass the 259 still required. ECB pitch inspector Jack Birkenshaw decided not to recommend any points deduction for Gloucestershire, having deferred his decision after seeing 23 wickets fall on the first day.Admitting it was a borderline decision, Birkenshaw took into account some poor batting and the fact that the surface played better as the game progressed. Northamptonshire began on 34 for 3 and progressed to 75 before nightwatchman David Lucas drove a catch to mid-off, having made a valuable 31.Gemaal Hussain made the breakthrough on his way to returning four for 62 and match figures of nine for 98 on only his second Championship appearance. First-innings hero Rob White fell for ten to a fine catch by Chris Taylor at backward point off Hussain, but Northamptonshire went into lunch at 124 for 5, with their lead 224.The match swung again as Andy Hall (19), Nicky Boje (four) and David Sales (39) were dismissed in the space of 12 balls, Jon Lewis claiming two of the wickets. But Brooks and Harrison then played with freedom and increasing confidence, both profiting from a dropped chance in recording their highest Championship scores.Harrison’s 54-ball innings featured four fours and a six. By the time he was bowled by James Franklin the lead was beyond 300 and Brooks went on to reach his fifty off 85 balls, with six fours. The 25-year-old former Oxfordshire player, who joined the Northamptonshire staff for last season, was last man out having put his side in a winning position.Gloucestershire soon lost opener Jonathan Batty, caught behind for six, but Championship debutant Chris Dent (23) helped Abdul-Kadeer Ali add 44 for the second wicket before being caught at short-leg off Boje.

Everton could land next Lukaku with Dike

So far this season, Everton have picked up five wins, four draws and eight defeats in their first season under Rafa Benitez, going through October and November without a league win.

Currently sitting in 14th place, Everton have the chance to splash the cash during the imminent January transfer window to try and strengthen their squad, while putting their poor form behind them to end the season as high up the table as they can.

90min recently reported that United States international Daryl Dike has been offered to various Premier League clubs, with Orlando City willing to let the striker leave in January after previously being linked with a move to Goodison Park.

As a result, this could be one transfer that Everton look to complete to strengthen their squad, particularly in an attacking sense.

A new Lukaku?

If the Toffees owner Farhad Moshiri were able to sign Dike in January, the striker could be Everton’s next version of Romelu Lukaku, who scored 87 goals in 166 senior games during his time at the Merseyside club, given how Dike has been likened to the Chelsea star in the past based on his power and strength.

Former teammate Jordan Williams once said: “Daryl has got a rocket of a right foot. I think he’s similar to Lukaku. He hasn’t scored as many goals yet, but he can hit a ball just as hard.”

In a combined total of 63 appearances for Orlando and previous club Barnsley, the 21-year-old has managed to rack up 28 goals and four assists in the process, showing how capable he is in front of goal at still a fairly young age.

Labelled as a “powerful” player by Emile Heskey that “knows where the back of the net is” and “who understands his strengths and ability and runs with it,” the forward has shown that he is a natural goalscorer and could have a big future ahead of him.

With Dominic Calvert-Lewin out injured and Cenk Tosun reportedly facing the exit door, Dike could be a useful attacking option for Everton throughout the remainder of the season, potentially allowing the club to forget all about Salomon Rondon who has only managed to score one goal in 12 appearances this season.

With all of this in mind, if the 21-year-old has been offered to a number of Premier League clubs, Everton should definitely explore the possibility of signing him.

Man Utd picked the wrong Ant(h)ony! Academy graduate Elanga making Erik ten Hag's decision to sell him look foolish as £86m signing struggles

The Red Devils had the exciting Sweden winger on their books but decided to make an expensive and wild bet on the Brazilian instead

The date is February 23, 2022, the city is Madrid and Manchester United fans have a new favourite player as well as a new favourite chant. Their teenage idol has silenced the usually deafening Atletico Madrid supporters at the Metropolitano and all that can be heard is a new version of a 1990s smash hit.

"Rhythm is a dancer, Anthony Elanga, come and stop him if you dare," sing the visiting fans. "Comes from Scandinavia, he's United's saviour, scoring goals from everywhere." Elanga has just equalised for United in the Spanish capital and, four days previously, he had scored in a 4-2 win against rivals Leeds.

It helps that he has been with the club since he was 12 and is a pacey winger with tricky feet, following in a fine tradition of United favourites from George Best to Ryan Giggs to Cristiano Ronaldo. There is a sense that he is saving United, too, not just from defeat to Atletico, but also from a gloomy season in which they have already sacked Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and suffered a series of humiliating defeats.

Elanga is also an exciting new figure for United fans to believe in less than a month after that shocking audio of Mason Greenwood emerged, leading to his arrest and his banishment from the squad. The future looks bright for Elanga at Old Trafford.

But fast forward two years and Elanga has left the club, joining Nottingham Forest last summer for a paltry free of £15 million ($19m), having made just five Premier League starts under Erik ten Hag compared to 14 the previous campaign under Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick.

Meanwhile, Antony, the player who was signed for a whopping £85m ($107m) and took Elanga's place in the team, cannot even get in the starting line-up amid an injury crisis. As United head to Nottingham Forest in the fifth round of the FA Cup, the last chance to save their season, it is tempting to conclude that they put their faith in the wrong winger called Ant(h)ony…

Getty ImagesNot quite justifying the hype

It is worth pointing out that the initial hype about Elanga generated was slightly wide of the mark and the Swede was not yet ready to be United's saviour. He was still only 19 and struggled to sparkle in the second-leg defeat against Atletico Madrid and in the numerous other matches he started in the final stretch of that dismal campaign, in which United recorded their lowest ever points total in the Premier League.

But he had shown enough promise not to be completely written off either, yet that is what Erik ten Hag seemed to do when he took over later that summer. The manager did give Elanga three consecutive starts early on in the season against Liverpool, Southampton and Leicester and he did not quite deliver, but he can't have been playing too badly as United won all three. By that point, however, Ten Hag had effectively undermined the Swede by urging the club to sign Antony from Ajax and at an extortionately high cost.

The manager had naturally wanted extra reinforcements after the opening defeats to Brighton and Brentford but if there was one area of the squad that definitely did not need addressing, it was wide forwards. Antony's arrival took the number of wingers to four, joining Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Elanga. It was five if you counted Alejandro Garnacho, who had come on the pre-season tour and soon began knocking on the first team's door.

Garnacho's stunning performances deservedly saw him get more and more opportunities and Elanga continued to be marginalised. And this was despite the fact that Antony's promising start (three goals in his first three games, a club record) had quickly given way to a barren period in which the Brazilian contributed zero goals and zero assists in the league in the space of six months.

Elanga ended the campaign with just seven starts in all competitions. His last appearance was hardly a nice memory, being introduced for the final five minutes of the humiliating 7-0 demolition by Liverpool at Anfield, when United were already six goals down.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesTwelve goal contributions

Elanga was one of many players the club had decided to sell last summer but one of the few there was legitimate interest in. Forest, who love a transfer nearly as much as Chelsea, were glad to take Elanga off United's hands and the forward knew he had to make the move to get his stalling career back on track.

"It is the right time now for the perfect next step in my career. I'm someone who lives for football and I need to be on the pitch every week doing what I love," Elanga wrote in an emotional farewell statement. "We'll always have 'Rhythm is a dancer'. It meant the world to me and my family every time that we heard that chant."

Elanga has been superb for Forest, lighting up an otherwise tricky season for the Tricky Trees. He needed less than two minutes of action off the bench away to Arsenal to get his first assist for Forest and did not take long to get his first goal, the only strike in a historic win at Chelsea.

In 18 starts and seven appearances as a sub, Elanga has five goals and seven assists in the Premier League. That's more goal contributions than any other Forest player and indeed any United player. And it's a darn sight better than Antony, who has no goals and no assists in the league despite making 20 appearances.

Getty'I wanted a fresh start'

United might well be looking back at the decision to get rid of Elanga as one of many recruitment errors they have made in the last few years and which Sir Jim Ratcliffe's INEOS experts will be seeking to put right now they have taken control of the club's football operation.

Looking at how well Elanga has done at the City Ground, Forest got a real bargain while United badly sold themselves short in accepting just £15m for a player who has out-scored every United player bar Scott McTominay and Hojlund. Elanga, however, does not appear to be looking back.

“Sometimes football is like that, it might not always work somewhere,” Elanga told The Times. “I had seen what he [Ten Hag] did at Ajax so I was looking forward to it but I just didn’t get the opportunities.

“It was difficult but it was needed because I wanted to play and I didn’t want to spend another season just playing 10 minutes or not playing for 10 games. I wanted a fresh start but I knew it wouldn’t be easy leaving a club that I had been at for nine years."

Getty ImagesAntony still struggling

While Elanga has thrived away from United, Antony has continued to flop while remaining with the Red Devils. And the City Ground has mixed memories for the Brazilian. Last year he broke his six-month goal drought by scoring for United and got a rare assist by setting up Diogo Dalot in a sweeping move.

But in December he had one of his worst ever games for United in a grim 2-1 defeat. To make matters worse, he was outshone by Elanga. Former United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel did not hold back in his criticism: "He doesn't give much to the team. He frustrates his team-mates. It's really frustrating. He's had an opportunity for a long time, this is a player that hasn't scored this season, he's not made an assist and he's not scored, it's like he's not really understanding the game."

Antony has not started a league match since that drab performance at the City Ground. He has, at least, managed to get off the mark for the season, getting his only goal and assist in the 4-2 win over fourth division Newport County in the FA Cup fourth round.

After that match he gave a defiant interview in which he vowed to put things right. "I fought hard to reach the levels of playing for this club, I know I can build on yesterday’s performance and continue to show my qualities," he said. "I pushed myself day after day for better performances.

"I will continue to completely close myself off to improve and play the football that United hired me to do. The whole club, every fan, deserves the best from each one of us. United is one of the biggest clubs in the world, where everyone wants to be and it's where I want to build my story."

Bell's comeback hundred sets up comfortable victory

Ian Bell’s comeback hundred set up England for a comprehensive victory in the first one-day international against West Indies

The Report by Andrew McGlashan16-Jun-2012England 288 for 6 (Bell 126) beat West Indies 172 (Smith 56, Bresnan 4-34) by 114 runs (D/L method)
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsIan Bell’s first boundary was a straight six off Andre Russell•Getty ImagesIan Bell won the battle of the replacement openers in the first one-day international as he marked his return to England’s 50-over side with his second ODI hundred – nearly five years after his previous one – to earn the home side an early series advantage with a 114-run victory. Initially West Indies threatened in the chase with Dwayne Smith filling the void left by Chris Gayle’s late injury but England’s quicks burst through either side of a rain delay. In some neat symmetry this was the same ground (albeit with a different name) where Bell made his only other ODI hundred – against India in 2007 – and this time he reached three figures from a lively 95 balls to suggest that the hole left by Kevin Pietersen’s retirement will not be as vast as some had envisaged. A day after suffering a suspected fractured jaw, and needing 10 stitches after being hit in the nets, there was barely a false shot in the innings until he top-edged a slower ball from Dwayne Bravo when level with his career best having played gracefully to show, yet again, that one-day cricket is not all about brute force. The opening partnership did not flourish with Alastair Cook was caught behind third ball against Ravi Rampaul but Bell ensured that the team’s recent run of ODI hundreds continued; this was the fifth match in a row that one of the openers had reached three figures after the back-to-back efforts of Cook and Pietersen against Pakistan in the UAE.England’s final total of 288 for 6 was less than they may have hoped for after 30 overs when they were 163 for 3, but was still the second highest score batting first at this venue – and England’s highest – after Craig Kieswetter produced some late boundaries along with Stuart Broad in a useful 43-run stand off 34 balls. After the early loss of Lendl Simmons, Smith’s innings included three boundaries in four deliveries against Steven Finn, the second of which was a pick-up over deep square-leg, and went past fifty off 38 balls. Longevity, though, has never been Smith’s strength and and aiming another shot through the legs side got an edge off Bresnan. In one sense he had done his job, but it was also a missed opportunity to build a long innings. Bresnan struck again in his next over when he won an lbw against Denesh Ramdin – batting at No. 3 after Darren Bravo picked up a groin injury in the field – after the wicketkeeper had lurched to 22.West Indies continued to play their shots with both Marlon Samuels and Dwayne Bravo collecting early boundaries but as rain started to fall Finn struck in the first over of his second spell by squaring up Bravo with a full delivery. In that one moment West Indies went from being ahead of the D/L par score to being behind it. The margin became even greater when Eoin Morgan plucked out Kieran Pollard’s fierce cut at backward point. When Samuels clipped James Anderson to midwicket shortly after an hour’s delay for rain, West Indies’ last hope had gone. In total they lost 9 for 77 in 18 overs.Smart stats

England’s 114-run win is their largest ever against West Indies in ODIs. Their previous highest is the 89-run win in Adelaide in 1987.

The win is also England’s second-largest in Southampton after the 121-run win over Pakistan in 2010. Since 2005, West Indies have lost by a margin of 100-plus runs ten times.

England’s total of 288 is their fifth-highest against West Indies and their second-highest against West Indies at home. The total is the joint-highest for England in ODIs in Southampton.

Ian Bell equalled his highest score in ODIs (126) with his century. He has now scored 3360 runs at an average of 35.00.

Bell’s 126 is the fourth-highest score by an England player against West Indies and second-highest against West Indies in home ODIs. Marcus Trescothick is on top for his 130 in 2004.

The 108-run stand between Bell and Jonathan Trott is the second century stand for the second wicket for England against West Indies. The highest is 144 between Graeme Hick and Michael Atherton in 1995.

Tim Bresnan’s 4 for 34 is the fourth-best bowling performance for England against West Indies. The best is Andrew Flintoff’s 5 for 19 in 2009. It is also Bresnan’s third haul of four or more wickets.

The foundation of England’s total was laid by a second-wicket stand of 108 between Bell and Jonathan Trott, Warwickshire team-mates who used their understanding well to run hard between the wickets against some lacklustre West Indian fielding. The boundaries had been pushed right to edge of the playing area in anticipation of West Indies’ power-packed batting order. After the early loss of Cook, Bell gave England momentum when he took 18 off Andre Russell’s third over which began with a sublime straight six and continued with three further boundaries around the ground. Pietersen, who tweeted support to his former team-mates during the day, could not have done it any better.Bell had a nervous moment on 23 when Rampaul was convinced he had found the outside edge but umpire Richard Kettleborough said not out. Hot Spot did not show anything on replay although Snicko suggested at a thin edge. Two balls later Bell responded with a rasping square cut as Rampaul dropped short and wide.Bell’s timing and placement was effortless, but the going was tougher for Trott who had collected an early boundary through midwicket but had to wait until the 16th over for his second when Bravo drifted into the pads. As in the final Test, Sunil Narine did not overly trouble the top order – at one stage being reverse swept by Trott – but did break the partnership when Trott was caught behind cutting. It was spin (or rather slow bowling) that continued to keep West Indies in touch when Ravi Bopara edged a cut against Samuels to end his first international innings of the season following injury. Samuels also claimed the important wicket of Morgan who chopped into his stumps after a promising start to his innings and a stand of 51 in eight overs with Bell. After a debilitating winter in all formats and an IPL spent warming the bench Morgan looked in decent form and with a far less pronounced squat at the crease than on his previous appearance. After the success of Bell, significant runs for Bopara and Morgan are the next boxes England will be looking to tick.

Celtic will be without Starfelt v Aberdeen

Celtic have been handed a potentially significant selection setback ahead of their Premiership clash with Aberdeen at Parkhead on Sunday.

What’s the word?

According to journalist Jo Hendry, the Hoops are set to be without Carl Starfelt once again for the visit of the Dons, while fellow summer signing Giorgos Giakoumakis is also expected to be sidelined.

Following a press conference on Wednesday, she tweeted: “Ange Postecoglou confirms no fresh injuries. Rogic close but will probably leave until weekend. Starfelt a few days behind that. Giakoumakis to have further investigation on a knee issue.”

With holding midfielder Nir Bitton forced off the field of play with a knock on Thursday, Celtic could be without several key players for their crucial clash against Aberdeen.

Ange Postecoglou will be gutted

News that Starfelt is not expected to play any part for Celtic over the weekend will surely leave Postecoglou feeling gutted.

The 26-year-old centre-back arrived from Russian outfit Rubin Kazan for a reported £4m fee over the summer and has already started 20 games in all competitions for his new club in the opening weeks of the current campaign.

His underlying numbers highlight the impressive impact he was having for Postecoglou’s ever-improving Celtic. As per WhoScored, Starfelt has averaged 0.3 blocks, 1.5 interceptions and a whopping 3.7 clearances per league game this term, placing him in the top four for each metric when compared to his teammates.

With the Glasgow giants conceding seven goals in the four games that the Sweden international has missed in recent weeks, Postecoglou will be desperate to get the 6 foot 1 beast back in action as soon as possible.

Home-grown star hit 30 goals last seasonJust two to his name in the current campaignRed Devils lacking spark as a collectiveWHAT HAPPENED?

The Red Devils have plenty of international firepower at their disposal, with the likes of Rasmus Hojlund and Antony also forming part of their attacking arsenal. Erik ten Hag’s side are, however, short on goals and drew a blank again in a disappointing 1-0 defeat away at Newcastle.

AdvertisementGettyTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Rashford – who has two efforts to his name through 18 appearances this season – was replaced just after the hour mark at St James’ Park and was caught on camera appearing to question why he is still with the Red Devils. pundit Jamie Carragher has said of the struggling home-grown star: “Watching Marcus Rashford, it was an unacceptable performance, for a few reasons. None of the players came out with any credit, but that lad didn’t play midweek [in the Champions League], so there isn’t any mitigating reason why he hasn’t been 100 per cent. I’ve been a local player and it isn’t easy, especially when your team is not doing well. When it’s not going well, it’s your job to fix it and you’ve got to drag those around you. I’m watching Marcus Rashford and he reminds me of Martial. And that’s the worst possible thing you can probably say about him. A foreign player who comes in, hasn’t done the business, doesn’t care – and that’s a fact with Martial. Marcus Rashford is now looking like Anthony Martial. As a local player, it’s your job to drag those other players up. If your confidence is down, you’re not scoring goals, or you’re not getting assists, no problem. But you do not stop running for that badge, that shirt and those supporters.”

WHAT KEANE SAID ABOUT RASHFORD

United legend Keane backed up that point by saying of a man that netted 30 times last season, but now finds himself struggling alongside team-mate Martial – who has scored just 12 Premier League goals since the 2020-21 campaign got underway: “He’s a local lad, he’s got the mega deal and that is all well and good. I need a bit more – you run forward but you have to run back. Cover yards. He’s 26 now, he’s not a child anymore. He’s got to set the example. Is he on his own? Absolutely not. He’s one of the experienced players in that dressing room and if he’s not setting the example. We mentioned Martial and I know he’s an easy target. We forgive Martial when he scores a goal every 14 years. But if we’re 1-0 down to Newcastle and we put the ball into the box for you, you better get hold of that ball and get us up the pitch. But he’s just touching it and giving it away cheaply. I’m thinking, ‘You might as well go down the leagues’. Man United were trying to get rid of him a few years ago.”
